Afraid of the dark? Me? Psh.

Dateline 1/25/2002: ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK?

Priests of Liabo throughout the continent have reported that they have sensed strange energies building both overhead and underneath, a dangerous force that they feel is both ancient and terrible. They caution adventurers to be wary, as this energy could manifest itself in deadly ways in the future. Sages and priests alike are investigating the matter and attempting to deduce the identity of that which is causing these subtle disturbances in the essence, and to stop it before it becomes hazardous to the people of Elanthia.

This could get real grimy.

rht reg

I already hear one so-called Sheru follower saying it's all about him. I WILL lose my mind if it has ANYTHING to do with this flock following God. ::grins:: reg
I just hope it's not another pay-to-play quest. reg
Oh it's definitely not. It has already started. I've already heard of two incidences... a monk visiting the town of Solhaven and the grizzled warrior of the landing visiting Hearthstone... both citing them feeling and sensing the same feelings and sounds. It's all over and it looks like it'll be interesting.

I'm looking forward to it. reg

SPEAK OF THE VISHMIIR ...

The strange energies first sensed weeks ago has manifested itself hordes of undead beings! Scrambling for answers, high clerics worldwide have come to an agreement on the origins of these strange new undead that plague us -- the passing of the recent Lornon's Eve has caused a disturbance across all the continent of Elanith. The powers of darkness rose to untold heights during that night, and have awakened the Vishmiir, an ancient type of undead that leeches off the thoughts of the living.

This is not all, the vishmiir have called their many undead thralls to them as they appear and spread havoc. They appear anywhere that civilization is, and people of all towns are advised to take cover from these monstrosities. Clergymen worldwide are searching for an answer to banish these foul beasts, and have found a temporary solution -- the vishmiir's power wanes within the heart of the Dragonspine, and the settlement of Zul Logoth seems to be safe from their physical threat. They can touch the minds of people there, but their hordes cannot come through the dense rock, and neither can they. reg

The invasion that hit the Landing last night at about 9:30 p.m. (pacific) was pretty fun. I enjoyed watching the clouds darken, and all the other "changes" that occurred before the invasion hit.

The invaders seemed to be various ages, which allowed more people to participate. This was the first invasion that I was able to kill something and didn't die once!

I appreciate the effort that the staff is putting in this event....I have a feeling this is only the beginning!

I was huntin thunder trolls with my little 10 train warrior when it all started, I'm thinkin oh they walk among us, must mean they are in town, I should be safe ringing in and out. Couple rooms later I run into one of the carcasses, which boils me a few seconds later. Only got stunned for 1 round cause he's a fair elf, and ringed back into town, but it certainly livened up the night. Even if it did disrupt my hunting plans and I had to sit at the inn groveling in fear, was a fun surprise in contrast to the norm.

I got no dukes. reg

Quick note about the Vishmiir:

Apparentally you're not supposed to say their name out loud or on the public amunet. If 'they' hear you, things will happen. I was in Icemule town central talking with Shonison yesterday (a couple hours before the invasion), and the subject of the Vishmiir came up. A few seconds later, he and I got a 'warning' message about screams and dying etc. No one else heard it.

And the invasion that night.. Wow, that was excellent! For once I was able to participate on a relatively even playing field.

Here are the (approximate) stats for creatures that invaded:
--------
'a gruesome skeletal infantrymen'
AS: 0 (heh)
DS: 68

'a dark spectral monk'
AS: up to 274 (with guidance, probably)
DS: 130 in offensive
CS: 100
TD: 105
notes: Swing high and carry scythes. Be careful. Average swing seemed to be just over 210.

'rancid one-eyed zombie'
renamed zombie, except these swing weapons

'a dark spectral wolf'
re-named ghost wolf

'a dark ethereal spirit'
AS: 235 (falchion), 200 (bolt)
DS: 128 (offensive)
CS:
TD: 89
notes: have a maneuver attack similar to undead in Illistim, where they materialize a limb and hit you with it. They also can call wind.

'a decaying nonomino'
AS: 160(bite), 172(claw)
DS: 163
CS: 112
TD:

'a blood-stained shambling carcass'
AS: 155 (mace)
DS: 100
CS: 100

They were pretty rare the entire invasion, I saw maybe 5 total, but they could boil. Also had various wizard spells.
-------

One of the critters was breaking major sanctuaries, probably the monk, so that's something to watch for in future invasions.

Good job, Taernath! I always think about making notes on the critters invading AFTER the fact!

I wish I had saved some of the messages that appeared prior to the invasion... those were great and really set the mood!

Summer reg

Carcasses were rare? that seemed to be all I was running into, luckily it isn't easy to boil a 50 train unencumbered halfling sorcerer, or else I'd have been toast. Killed at least 6 down in the catacombs, went out to hob village and killed 3 or 4, killed two in ocoma vale and wehntoph, and killed like at least 4 or 5 on north ring road. They didn't seem very rare to me.

::shrugs::

I was in Icemule. The second the invasion began, I ran into 2 carcasses, and one did a very minor boil on me. Got healed, set up mobility, and ran around town killing things. Most of the critters I ran into were the skeletons, spirits and monks. I'd see maybe 1 carcass for every 20 of the other critters, and I was running around town a LOT. Only toward the end of the invasion in a symbol of need did I see three carcasses at once... Maybe it was just luck? Don't know. reg

Most creatures are just renamed.

Skeletons, rotting corpses, zombies, ghost wolves, etc...

Regardless, I'm having a ball. My warrior is a crusader against the undead, and is just old enough that he can handle about half the creatures with no problem, the others are too old for him - nothing like a little adversity. reg

They threw in some banshees too, later on. Something to watch for. reg

We also had a lot of horses in Solhaven.

Varunaur warhorses, all of the horses from the Silver Valley. (Pooks, nightmares, etc.) The warhorses' manuevers and the nightmares' dispelling was kinda annoying for the younger folks.

I believe this message was the spark of the invasion of 02/03/02:
A noxious feeling of slowly dripping oil suddenly overtakes your mind and feels as if it's wriggling through your brain.
As the sickly sensations travel past your skull and into your limbs,
an icy cold voice speaks, "The... thralls thirst... for the... stench of your... death.
Rise up...walking dead, and... crush the... little ones."
-------------------------------------------
And once you heard this, they started to retrocede:
A thick feeling of rancid ooze overtakes your mind, like a writhing grub eating through and around it.
The presence speaks in a voice colder than ice, "Dawn... comes, little ones.
Enjoy... the peace... it brings, for... soon... we will be... powerful enough...
to defy its light."

prolly another invasion happening tonight i suspect.
reg

Yep, happened right at midnight central (Simu) time. I'm betting there will be another one at midnight CST tonight too. Hopefully something will actually happen to advance the storyline instead of just another mindless invasion. reg
Okay, I'm trying to make sense of this storyline, but I think I have some huge holes that need to be filled in. What I have gathered so far ~

When the Vishmiir and friends started attacking, they only came out in the dark. Now that they are stronger, they attack at all hours. There seems to be three waves of invaders... young, middle, older.

A new section of a temple in Solhaven was opened, and the story of the chalice and the crystal was revealed. The crystal had been shattered, and shards have been discovered, or given to various people in all the towns. The shards are to be passed on to people for acts of kindness. Once the shards are passed on, they glow with a golden light, and a duplicate shard is made. The giver keeps the white shard, and the golden shard continues to be passed on. It seems that the chalice is filling with a golden liquid as each chard is passed on. There is a black oily substance in the chalice as well.

That's about all I have so far. This is probably bad, but the chalice filling up with the golden liquid because of the chards being passed around, reminds me a little of that old Ghostbusters movie, where the Marshmallow Man is destroyed by the positive thoughts and singing of the New Yorkers.

Anyone have any other details, or corrections? Any stories of people receiving the shards, and what they did with them? I received one last night, but not sure why I did. I hope it wasn't because of my "No Tips" policy.

Summer reg

The Coven traveled to Solhaven last night, as many of our Sisters hold golden shards.

It is said that the shards are indeed pieces of the crystal that once defeated the vishmiir.

If a person is seen doing a good deed and presented with a shard, it's dark in color. The person must agree to pass along the shard to others that have done good deeds.

Each time the shard is passed to a person deemed worthy, it splits and changes color, becoming lighter. The shards must be passed from person to person until they reach a bright golden color. Golden shards are to be guarded closely and kept near your heart.

(When a shard is passed off, it splits and one drops to the ground. Be sure to grab the one that drops - it's your 'new' shard and will have changed colors)

As the shards are passed from good people to good people and turn golden, the chalice in the Temple in Solhaven fills.

Once this chalice is filled......

All this talk of shards now gives me visions of gelflings and skeksies.

Should I keep an eye out for Aughra and the Great Conjunction? reg
