Brawling Question

I've recently returned to the lands and am struggling with the new CM as well as all the changes that have occurred to our profession.

What do you all think of a brawling Sorcerer? Is it viable? Obviously I can't train it at every level, but let me show you my stats and training at level 0. What do you all think?

At my first training I had 35/45 Tp's, by level 100 I would have 53/57. Had 3 physical and no mental TP's after my first train.

A brawling would work fine as long as you got at least 40 ranks. Try for more, but make sure you get that at min. Sorcs have no problem with defense ever nor do they have a problem with offense.

Long ago, training in brawling meant you didn't have to train in a weapon OR a shield.

If this hasn't changed, and you want to be a brawling sorcerer, ditch shield training and go for the brawling every level.

Best to verify whether or not this is still true though.

It has changed.

Thanks for the replies Sonic and Desharei. It certainly would be nice if I didn't have to train in shield either, but that probably IS too much to ask for!

I would be interested in hearing from as many people as possible on this subject. Any Sorcerers out there that are currently training in brawling whenever they can fit it in? How is it working out?

I started training in brawling many years ago, back when people asked me if I was crazy because it was totally unheard of for a sorcerer (other than Thalior).

I also trained in things people thought were stupid - like spell aiming, for instance, and magic item use.

Back then, none of these things were good for the "optimized" sorcerer. But I had no desire to be a cookiecutter, and branched out into anything that seemed remotely magical. That included brawling, because I just couldn't imagine a sorcerer needing a weapon and shield all the time.

As a result, my character ended up being more viable in higher levels than most who started their characters around the same time I did.

Because I refused to train in armor past full leather, I doubt I'd make it to the Rift. But other than that, I think I did a damned good job with Bestatte's training, even though I did it "all wrong."

I did train in OHE and shield, skipped both on occasion to get an extra rank of combat maneuvers or brawling. But once I got to Shadow Valley, I kinda stopped bothering with the weapon or shield, depending on my mood.

I did fine in the kiramon mines without a shield. I did excellently in pyrothags. Stance advanced, no airwall, no weapon. I *did* get a ranger to give me a mobility boost and a single shot of colors. Other than that I was self-sufficient there. The only things that ever got me were the skayls when they boiled earth. Pyrothags weren't bad at all.

On Mt. Anawhatever...I did great with the seekers. And I can't remember what those things were that would give you a hand injury when you skinned them, but those were a hoot to hunt. All this open handed. One hand opened, anyway. Always kept either a weapon or shield up, but only because I didn't start with brawling and keep up with it exclusively.

I'd like to know what the changes were though, it's a shame we can't have that as an option.

Edited to add the following:

I hear a lot about how important equipment is, and I should include what I used for comparison I guess.

I had a 6.5x imflass stiletto, though I had no problem using a plain e-bladed iron stiletto when I returned to the game this past year. I used a 5x shield, though when I returned I did fairly well with plain store-bought imflass.

I had 3x lightly padded elven casting leathers, no idea if was crit or damage padded. Never cared. I just liked how they looked

When I returned, I used someone's 2x full leather, didn't seem to have much difficulty.

I also managed to get quite a few triple trains in for spell research, though it wasn't a priority for me.

Bestatte was level 70-something when I last played her, but keep in mind I stopped playing GS over 2 years ago and only return once every 6 months or so just to see how the game's going.

I last checked out the critters in Ta'Illistim, and unfortunately don't remember what critters I hunted so I can't tell you if I was trained appropriately or not for them. But I had a blast tearing them up with focused implosion, whatever they were. And managed to get a leg from a kobold on the way there with focused limb disruption. That was just TOO much fun!

I have a brawling sorcerer. Fully singles in brawling and no other weapons. And I am pretty sure ive heard of a few others as well who have at least tried to go this way. Its not too uncommon. reg
