Is it viable???

Just started a dark elven wizard that is now almost 6 trains. Is it viable to not train CM at all and make it to the cap and beyond?
And Kranar, do you have any CM training?

It is viable to make it to the cap, however I've yet to see a training plan that will get you beyond it.

CM's purely optional. reg

It's viable to train to the cap without it, and beyond the cap without it.

DS gain per level using a 6x shield and no CM is rougly 1.2 in guarded stance

With CM it's 1.6.

So let's now evaluate this.

You spend 15 physical training points and 8 mental training points to get 0.4 DS.

Now this isn't like a solid .4 DS per level that is easy to keep and stays on your body, it's DS that is lost from any number of things such as kneeling or laying down, being forced in offensive stance.

I suppose when the day comes that a wizard in guarded stance is unable to get the DS he needs because he lacked combat maneuvers, I'll re-evaluate my stance on the issue. As it is, my DS is 150 points higher in guarded stance than the highest AS on a critter in the game. Maybe when the game expands to level 500 and there is absolutely nothing in the way of new spells I may just regret afterall only having 24 ranks in CM (which I regret having right now!).

I used to think that having CM was worthwhile, but then I realized that the only reason I die is from being in a stance OTHER than guarded, so I quit training in it and wish I never trained in it to begin with.
