Forging released?

Dateline 11/13/2001: FORGING IS RELEASED!

Forging is now available in Elanthia! Public workshops will soon be open in every town, providing the opportunity to develop your own weapon crafting skill! If you've always wanted to be able to say, "See this weapon? I made it myself!" or just longed for a nifty bronze toothpick like all the real heroes are sporting, Forging could be the skill you've been waiting for!

END NEWS ITEM

Anyone find where the places to do this is yet? Or is it even out yet?

Where can you find the materials and how much do they cost?

Amount of time involved to make something?

Someone please fill me in!

Buckwheet reg

It's been out for a few days and from what I've seen is just as much a waste of time as I predicted. I've only heard this from two or three people though.

Sonic reg

Not sure about any other towns but it's definitely open in the Landing.

I think its near or in the blacksmith.

You purchase the needed items at that location and rent the room. (An apron is mandatory and also bars of metal to work)

It is NOT a rapid process and I went with a group so we were able to amuse each other during the waiting periods.

I don't see myself being there an incredible amount of time but there certainly are many who seem to love it.

Only real complaint I would have at this point being the lines and the arguments(one of them having made its way to these boards) that have been spawned there. There have already been adjustments made in the signage to try to address the line problem and hopefully more forging rooms will also open. reg

The lines are just because it's new. When the rogues guild first opened you'd be hardpressed to get a footpad without a pretty long wait. Now there are always quite a few of them just standing around waiting for players.

Can someone explain a little more about forging, or give the location of the forges? I stopped by the Landing's blacksmith the other day, but didn't see much except for an 'empty forge' and a new doorway to an empty room. reg
Forging has been released in platinum for a couple of weeks. Seems to be some tedious stuff thats for sure...but after two weeks, I know of one warrior that is in the middle of an invar longsword that he is making...Not sure of many of the mechanical details but he has a guide that is almost finished that he will be posting in the next two or three days.

Forging is definitely not for those with a short attention span. It IS very rewarding. Beyond the rich reward of seeing that HISSSSS of the water or oil in the tempering trough and a good quality blade/head/staff-cap or what have you, there are some very real benefits to spending the amount of time (and silver!) it takes to produce quality weaponry. Here are some of them:

1) When you start forging high quality weapons (well-made, elegant, or 'perfect'), the weapon has stronger breakage stats (called forging by some) AND hits harder than a store bought weapon of the same material. This has a lot of ramifications for the upcoming breakage system, obviously. Why put silvers in Tykel's pocket for a weapon I can produce that is cheaper, has better strength and durability, and hits harder? Hmmm.

2) At a TBA time, forging will impart a bonus to repairing your weapon with a so-called 'field repair kit' (See the forging boards at GS3's official website for details on that).

3) Anyone can do it. Anyone. Rangers and rogues actually have a better professional bonus toward crafting (the skill necessary to actually make a forging-hammer and vise together your real weapon once it's pieces are assembled), while fighters have a better professional bonus toward actually forging. Some professions have a slight negative modifier, but time and a little luck eats those up as well. Racially, Elves, yes, Elves! Have the easiest time crafting, while Dwarves and Giantmen have easiest time forging. Finally, stat modifiers include Strength, Intelligence, and of course Dexterity.

4) Magical metals are on their way! They will be available via boxes found or merchants <possibly, up to them> and so will rare glyphs (the magical weapon piece patterns needed to forge items like claidhmores, lances, and some of the weapon types you are not seeing right now).

As to where the forge workshops are in the Landing, visit the blacksmith and head all the way north (new areas) and you will find shops outside as well as 20 (I think) workshops. I've never had to wait over 10 minutes in a line and many times I haven't had to wait at all.

Should you need advice or help, please feel free to ask -- most forgers are eager to share knowledge, especially the Silver Gryphons. It's a project we've helped Mikos develop and 'un-bug' for many many years.

I'd also hit the forging boards quick-like, and read up on it all. Mikos has been very attentive and responsive to issues/questions.

Respectfully,

Ahhh yes, Heya Kriztian, fergot bout all those toothpicks you used to make...Heh, even sold a few of em on the net back in the day for decent silver....hehe. Hope everythings good in prime land for ya.

I spent several hours today learning how to craft a forging-hammer. It's a very long and involved process, but I'll try to outline it really quickly. If you want to figure it out for yourself, skip over my post.

Here are my stats as a human ranger:

Constitution (CO): 64 .... 7
Dexterity (DE): 64 .... 7
Discipline (DI): 94 .... 22
Logic (LO): 60 .... 10
Intelligence (IN): 61 .... 10
Strength (ST): 94 .... 27
Reflexes (RE): 94 .... 22
Charisma (CH): 49 .... 0
Wisdom (WI): 74 .... 12
Aura (AU): 100 .... 25
----------------------------------------

When you first arrive at the forging shop, buy a leather apron (necessary), and a few bars of bronze. The bronze ran 500 silver per bar, and is decent to use when practicing. Get maybe 3-4 of them.

Wait in line (if there is one) until you can rent a forging workplace. They cost 1000 silver, and you have them for up to an hour. If you leave, you'll have to rent a new one. I've also been told that if you leave, the timer isn't reset, which means that workplace is unavailable to everyone until your time runs out. Make absolutely sure you have everything you need before you begin work.

When you enter, decide whether to make a hammer-head, or a hammer handle. I wasn't able to tell if there's a difference in difficulty between the two. Look on the workbench to see the glyphs, then STARE at HEAD for a hammer head, or HANDLE for the handle. This will take around 30 seconds.

Next, TURN GRINDER. This takes over 100 seconds to complete. After this is finished, you will either end up with nothing, a toothpick, or a hammer piece. Most of the time I ended up with nothing, but was able to just re-stare at the glyph and start over on the same piece of bronze. Occasionally you'll screw up and waste the bar, causing a toothpick to form. When a hammer piece is crafted, you get 'a leftover bronze bar'. I'm not sure if using this to craft another section of the hammer is a good idea, but to be safe I started with a new bar for the next hammer-part.

Now for the third step. Put the hammer piece in your left hand, and LEAN POLISHER. This one took me a half hour to figure out the syntax. When that's complete, you should have polished both the pieces of the hammer (head and handle). Be careful though, it's possible to ruin your hammer and be forced to start over if you try to stop polishing before it's done. This takes about 70 seconds.

For the fourth step, take both the pieces of the hammer in each hand. Then TURN VISE. This takes around 80 seconds. You may or may not succeed in putting the pieces together, but if you don't, keep repeating this step until you do.

Throughout forging, you'll get a message that says something like 'Aha, you've learned something'. Im assuming this means you're getting better.

If everything worked out, you should have a forging hammer completed. Crude, but at least it's something. reg

Cha, so that's what became of ya! Hail, my good friend. Yes, toothpicks...and other wasted forging parts of yesteryear ::grins:: Their value was more than merely met the eye...

Few more things to add on to my post above:

Try to remember how many 'aha' messages you get. These are a measurement of your skill, and I've heard that after 200 aha's you begin to produce simple or plain items instead of crude ones. That should give you an estimate of just how long it takes to become good at this.

You can log off in a workshop, then log in later on to find you're still in the same spot.
