It has come to our attention that a person is attempting to impersonate members of Simutronics staff via instant messaging services such as AOL's Instant Messenger.

Simutronics will never contact a player through Instant Messages, ICQ, or other out-of- game "chat" formats. No one on staff will ever contact you for official purposes outside of the game. We do not handle Feedback issues, Billing issues, or Access issues through IMs or any other form of "instant message" application.

Simutronics employees will *NEVER* ask you for your password. Protect your account from potential sabotage by keeping your password secret!

Simutronics and its employees will *NEVER* send you updates to their software through e-mail. Programs in e-mail claiming to be from Simutronics can contain viruses or password "sniffers". All software supported by Simutronics is available *ONLY* in our download libraries on our web site.

Sincerely,

Daecir

Simutronics Lockout

They've stated that so much I'm actually tired of reading it. If people are stupid enough to give out that information, in email, in IM's, anywhere. Then they deserve what they get. reg
Some people are naive and/or innocent and would not think people would stoop so low as to do something like that. I don't think these players deserve to be taken advantage of. I am glad Simutronics makes an effort to keep them informed.

If someone doesn't have enough common sense I don't feel sorry for them.

Woo! We should all feel so honored to have the one person who's never been scammed, taken advantage of, or cheated of something posting on OUR boards! We're so special! reg

Even though the sarcasm is layed on like molasses, and I find it *somewhat* amusing, what is this really accomplishing? It's obvious that you don't like a specific person, without naming any names. You do realize, though, that responding like you do does nothing but encourage more of the same posting? So as long as you keep fueling the fire, they will still be on "our" boards.

Just for the record, I completely agree with Dustin. I find it infinitely hard to believe that someone would be naive enough to just give out their password to a random Joe-Blow who asks them in an IM. If they do, then so be it. People WILL (and frequently do) stoop that low, and if it's something you haven't figured out by now, then there are other issues we need to deal with. Simu CLEARLY states SEVERAL times throughout the signup process that they will never ask for your password or anything of the sort, and this is also done in several places throughout the newly designed website. I'm pretty sure it was there before the new design, too.

Anyways, if you're signing up for an account, playing GS (there's an ingame news feature about it too, even, type "news 5 1"), and still unclear about to who and when you should give out your password, then you have absolutely ZERO right or cause to complain when you get scammed.

Agreed. People who fall for this are naive. It's their own fault for being stupid enough to fall for this type of thing.

On the other hand .. if there's a known scam going on that is set up to trick people out of their passwords, what's wrong with Simu posting the pertinent info about it on their boards? Remember there are players of all stripes and various levels of expertise and experience in the online world. We all have to learn about this stuff somehow, someway. Better to learn via a note from the Company and not "the hard way", no?

Nice suggestion.. as to the smart @ss. I've been scammed before and I learned from my mistake. Sometimes you have to learn the hard way.

You'd be surprised just how often that happens. Not necessarily via IM, but through the game or otherwise.

Just for the record, yes I laid the sarcasm real thick there and I apologize for being sarcastic in the first place. I really meant to say that I find it hard to believe that someone who keeps knocking the company for stating a safety precaution and not having sympathy for those who don't know better has never been in that type of situation and wished people understood their position. Statements like the ones I've been seeing are just as insensitive as my comment could ever be.

I find nothing wrong with the company reemphasizing the need to stress how they won't contact anyone through any means asking for passcodes of any kind. Some people are gullible and too trusting and will do it because they don't know any better.

I have nothing against Dustin. You made it sound as though all my posts are knocking Dustin, so stop claiming that's what I'm doing. If anything, I try very hard to soften the flaming around here. I'm human. Once in a while I have my own bad days and I snap and say what I feel because there are quite a few people here who say whatever they feel every minute that they have them and no one seems to care. So sue me for being human.

Actually, if this is referring to what I think it is, it was pretty funny. reg
Yes, heh.

If you could please point out when I claimed that you always knocked him, I'd be happy. I was just going on the one post, which was pretty mean-spirited and sarcastic. You're human. I understand. We all have our bad days. No big deal. But you don't have to accuse me of something that I wasn't doing.

I apologized once. Let it go and continue posting on topic please. Thanks. reg

You expect to be able to throw your own personal barbs, but when someone tries to reply, you put on your "I'm a moderator" hat and tell them to stay on topic? No thanks, but I'd rather be given the chance to respond to comments directed at me, as anyone would.

And yes, you did apologize once. And tossed in a few extra remarks that didn't need to be included. And with that said, I'll say nothing else on the matter. Just don't make comments directed at people, wait for their response, then chastise them for going off-topic.

((Edited for brevity.))

To steal a saying from my old baseball coach, good eye Emtel.

I think folks who are posting here are forgetting some VERY important facts. 99% of the internet membership are fairly clueless and nieve, if not just out-&-out trusting when it comes to something as technically oriented as the internet.

We happen to be part of a (albet growing) minority, and are not only experienced and for the most part 'savey', but also jaded and cynical.

Who here HASNT heard a sob story about how so-&-so has been 'romantically involved' with another in-game for a time, and then suddenly all hell breaks loose when they log in to find themselves totally stipped down or worse, sent Demonic?
The fact that I perosnally KNOW several people who aside from turning on the switch and clicking a mouse, wouldnt know the difference if someone told them they needed 2 more hamsters in their computer for better computing power.
I have a friend who managed to not once, but THREE times open unsolicited e-mail attatchments, and not only infect herself, but her friends as well. One morning I logged in to get an e-mail from her ... I stupidly opened it as we had been talking about pictures of her trip, and when I got the e-mail from her saying these were the pictures, blammo

Sometimes we need to be protected from our own stupidity and trusting nature.. even if its at the lose of trust and comfort.

Its catch 22. You can be open, friendly and trusting, and end up being a target of every friggin scamming bastard out there.. or a cynical, closed hearted sarcastic bastard who never trusts again.

Or you can take a middle of the way.. and learn as you go.

Who here remembers those laughable attempts on AOL for folks to contact you as you logged in saying they were 'Sprint-net' reps or what-not, and you needed to reenter your log-in and password or get logged off? It was frightfully effective because folks JUST DIDNT have the experience to know better.
