Simutronics and Mythic

Just branching off from the other Dark Age of Camelot discussion to bring this up. I thought it was very interesting -- Though I don't know if its important or really means anything. Just an interesting coincidence.

This took place in IMs and is only the beginning of the conversation. Everything else had to do with Camelot and mechanics only. Though if anyone wants to read that I will post it. It is interesting reading if you play.

Anyway, cutting out the AIM names and stuff.

XXXXX: Heh. So, on this gaming site, they have the first interview with the Producer of DAoC in MP3 format. Its going to talk about where he wants to take Camelot, etc. Anyway, the first thing they are doing (I'm listening now) is asking him to give a little bit of his background.

ME: <grins>

XXXXXXX: He mentions two guys that he started with who, he broke off with,
because he didn't like their business practices. I found this quote interesting.."Anyway, so those two guys went off and created a company I've been battling with for ten years called Simutronics..."

ME: REALLY?!

XXXXXX: Yup.

ME: Two guys eh?

XXXXXXX: That's what he said. They did a little game together before Gemstone and DAoC apparently that broke them all up.

XXXXXXX: Well, he didn't mention Gemstone. Just kept saying Simu. Didn't mention any names or games.

Hmmm.

Wow, that IS interesting...

Probably John and David...those are the only 'two' guys I can think of that mean anything...

I'm buttering up Miphnik to buy me that game, lessee if it works.

Come to the Guniviere server and to Hibernia to play with us! Yay! <grins>

And be a druid too so you can raise us. <snickers>

Kidding, kidding.

<smooch>

Hey, I haven't had a chance to say anything to you lately -- Well, I haven't seen you online anyway. Congratulations and I wish you both the best.

Hey learn something everyday.

Well I have found a happy home. No wonder I was always so disenchanted with Clowntronics. Mythic represents to me a sane, down to earth, fair minded, ability to say when they are wrong, logical, fun driven, etc. etc.

Yes I could even go on and on. I have read some responses from those guys and there staff are just in touch with people in general. They make fun of themselves and at the same time make you feel involved with suggestions.

Look at now who will be successful and who won't. It doesn't take a genius to figure out.

Mythic stands to overtake the almighty Sony/Verant EQ crowd with DAOC. Yes it is getting those kind of reviews from prior EQ players (which I am not).

And to think both companies started somewhat close at the same time. Look at who had patience, perseverance, and hit the streets to drum up the revenue.

You would be amazed on the schedule and pace of bug response, improvements, and balance issues there. Compared to Simu it's like going Mach two by a Mig 29 at high aspect.

Hiway reg

Thanks sweetie! (er Leslie, not Hiway, unless of course you want to be called sweetie too)

Miph's been saying he hears that DAOC is like EQ 'lite'. Is that true? He's a hard core EQ'er', so I don't know how they compare since I don't play EQ...

But hey, 30 days free..I'll have to hook up to the Guin server and see what all the fuss is about.

reg

Gemstone, even though advertised as the most popular multiplayer game, has never been close to being the most popular multiplayer game. Maybe when there were only like 4-5 other games around back in the 80s, who knows...

EQ took a matter of months to attract close to 20 thousand members. DAOC will probably beat those numbers, and another game by the name of Shadowbaron (which I think looks the most impressive) will probably beat those.

- Lord Kranar, human Archwizard reg

yeah, the most popular game by far is blood pledge. Rediculously huge following in asia, planned to have been released two weeks ago but i haven't checked up on it (this thread just reminded me about it).

I didn't play EQ, but I did play Asheron's Call for close to a year. I enjoyed both -- But Camelot is going to keep my interest longer.

In AC (and I assume EQ since I've seen people trying to sell in game items) its all about the "uber items." Which, honestly is fun -- Finding some nice gauntlets with axe mastery V on them was awesome. --Daoc is different. No uber items. Its more the nitty-gritty stuff.

I can post that entire IM conversation - I'll pull it up and edit it. It basically says what the future has to offer.

Asheron's Call has an expansion disk for sale now -- We'll see how it does in relation to Camelot.

You guys make all valid points, but what about games that are coming of through systems. For example Playstation 2 and XBox. They both are going to have games you can play online with in months. Tony Hawke's pro skater 3 has been out for a couple of weeks now and that is an online game. In my honest oppinion I think Final Fantasy 11 will blow out most of these other games we are talking about, but we'll see.

Lord Deprav reg

I don't think FF11 will be worth the frisbee that you'll end up having the most use for it for. Squaresoft sucks so bad nowadays it's not even funny. I have no faith in them whatsoever anymore. Square died with Tactics.

I got no dukes. reg

Heh, well for anyone who didn't jump on the FF7 bandwagon, it's obvious. No squaresoft game post Chrono Trigger (with the exception of Tactics) has been worth playing. They've all been mediocre to crap. Square was raping SNES with games like FF2, FF3, Secret of Mana, and CT. Then they give us FF8? I dunno who the hell they are trying to kid, but I guess graphics and FMVs sell games nowadays, not music and characters.

I still listen to SNES rpg soundtracks because they ruled.

Sonic reg

Yah I think more or less the FMV's are what get me. Yah I didn't care for some of the later Final Fantasies either but I have faith in the newer ones. I thought the movie was pretty cool also. The graphics were just amazing. Just my oppinion though. We'll see how it goes.

Lord Deprav reg

Don't get me wrong, I like the FMVs too, but they should be things that can be scrapped and you won't miss anything. I guess I'm just kinda like one of those old men that whine about the young whipper snappers. Times change but people don't.

Sonic reg

Hey, Final Fantasy 7, 8, and 9 all had good music! And their story line wasn't that terrible, it just really wasn't worthy of the "final fantasy" name. But that's just my opinion. I'll argue FF7 is in the top 5 "best console game ever" category til the day I die, though.

Johnny reg

Johnny I almost fell off my chair when I read your post. Where do you rate FF1, FF2, FF3, zelda3, CT, BoF1, BoF2, SoM, and Tactics then?

Sonic reg

i could stack 20 different NES games against FF7, heck-- at least ten atari games i would rather play.

dragon warrior
zelda
ninja gaiden
marble madness
gunsmoke
missile command
river raid
pitfall
etc. etc.

I rented ff7 for a week, played the first couple areas and returned that piece of crap the very next day. I wanted to throw my controller at the screen when i saw the first couple enemies were gun toting security guards and rejects from MechWarrior 2.

Oh, and Tactics rules.

'lood reg

Thank God someone else played Ninja Gaiden! I always ran into a problem on I think it was stage 5 where I couldn't make a jump. You to upset me so extremely. I am now going to play it and get your advice on how to beat it 'lood. I'll get back to you!

Lord Deprav
Don't forget Ninja Turtles Arcade, Blades of Steel, Double Dragon, Gauntlet (original) and Tennis! reg

It was (and still is) one of my all time favorites. To this day i have yet to talk to someone who has finished the game.

I get to the very last guy, die, and have to make it through the whole last stage again, rinse repeat till the game overheats and freezes or i throw a controller accross the room ...

'lood
also track and field (don't cheat on the long jump...), bayou billy (hardest game ever), metroid, battletoads!!!!, tecmo bowl, spy hunter,contra...

reg

eh, firstly, Chrono Trigger was the roleplaying game for people who suffered severe head trauma and couldn't play a real one. There's a class you put Chrono Trigger fans in... People who couldn't handle Final Fantasy III. Secondly, Lineage: The Blood Pledge was and still is god-awful. Finally, a little game called Neverwinter Nights is going to come out and literally Ass-Rape all of these pansy little 3d roleplaying games.

P.S. Battletoads, Bayou Billy, Metroid, Spyhunter and Tecmo Bowl... That guy knows what's up! reg

Right, right.

Chrono Trigger was one of the most replayable CRPGs out there, and FF6 wasn't all that tough. Hell, item management in FF4H was harder.

And for no reason, one of the FF4 animated gifs I made:

FF6 was better than CT, but both were awesome. You can beat any game you want by just getting an emulator. They let you save whenever and whereever you want.

Sonic reg

Emulators...
