Dark Age of Camelot

OK got my brand spanking new copy of this yesterday. Read the manual and what I could find on the internet.

Everthing so far has been "flawless". I know go stand up and walk it off. Given the context this is a Gemstone board the mere words of something actually well thought out, planned, logical, and reasonable would knock the wind out of any Simutronic's customer.

No chit chatty ooc talk yet so far either. Hey even a guy responded when I asked a question. I asked for help on a task to group up and venture to another town and a guy did it even though it didn't even benifit him one bit.

The graphics are extremely smooth and I only have a TNT2 card as of now. I did order before the game came a new GeForce3 card that is backordered but should be coming soon. I only have 128MB ram and did order on Crucial's site 256MB more which is coming in a couple days. So far though I haven't really noticed any slowdown/jerky movements etc with my present set up. I do though have a cable modem, so that bandwidth might be helping too.

Anyway, like I said I would come in here and update all of you on how I like the new game. So far so good. If anyone else plays I am on the roleplay server. My character is planning to be a paladin and his name is Valore.

If you are trying it out too and see me please don't be a stranger.

Hiway reg

Ok the praise keeps coming.

Tradeskills that work, fun, well balanced, useful.

Groups are balanced, easy to find with a find a group feature.

Death actually means something but not to the point of no fun.

Maturity is existant.

Pvp is the name of the game with realm to realm combat if wanted but super easily avoided without the need of a flag. Extremely well thought out.

Actual quests that don't cost more money out of your pocket.

Spells that are limited in nature as to how many you can stack etc. Group spells are favored.

Alterations within the game for a great deal of variety without the need to suck up to anyone.

I will go on when I can next use all my fingers and toes again.

Hiway- Valore the Paladin. reg

Sounds awesome Hiway. My friend said he finally seen it at best buy the other day so I am debating on picking it up or not. I figure its going to be a 50 dollar game. So how much is the fee a month? Cause that will totally depend on if I get it or not. If it is more than 10 dollars I can wait for Final Fantasy 10 and even better yet 11 which will be an online role playing game just like everquest, dark ages of camelot, and soon to be shadowbane.

Best Buy did have a short sale on it for 29.95. I looked around online and found a good place that lists many games and has a buying guide of the different vendors. I see another place offering it for 29.95 at Gamespot. http://gamespot.com/gamespot/filters/products/0,11114,437033,00.html

If that link doesn't work just go to gamespot and select rpg and Dark Age of Camelot and select the price section. Remember to factor in state taxes if the company is in the same state as you and shipping costs.

All in all I got mine for 35.00 including shipping.

First month is free and monthly charge I think is 12 bucks. Well worth it to me. I am having a ton more fun than I had in gemstone.

The place is massive especially considering it is visual also. I tried solo hunting a bit and it was fun. I am also trying some armorsmithing. Wish my weeks vacation lasted longer. Even my wife is interested. Just have to get her a better video card though I think.

Well I am on the Guinivere server as it stands. Seems like a good bunch of folks so far. It is one of two dedicated RP servers, but to tell you the truth when I first logged on I just picked one at random without knowing. I really didn't see much difference. I wasn't there that long though.

Hiway (Valore)

reg

Heh, I've been playing on the Guinivere server for about a month now. (My trial period ends in two days, eek) Cost per month is going to be $12.50. What realm are you in? I noticed you said Paladin -- I play the equivalent in Hibernia as a Champion.

Man, the graphics still can astound me. Tammy and I were playing a week or so ago -- Just exploring. We are about to crest a hill when this monster of a creature appeared. Walking up the hill -- A huge dinosaur. Awesome. Tammy tried to talk me into fighting it just to see...but Nah...

Unfortunately there is OOC still in the game, but I know its being weeded out. I've done a few /appeals for name violations. If you've not been to the capitol of your realm, the OOC on the broadcast channel is there. Basically numbers and the like in regard to the sale of items.

But, unlike Simutronics, they're actually doing something about it and have a policy in place to enforce.

Compared to the black channel on the amulet it is still extremely minor. A simple send message to the ooc person nicely usually helps. Most of the time I just deselect the option on my chat window.

Egads doing the armor craft to make my own armor was an undertaking that I don't think I am ready for. Whew!

Only level 8 and think I am still leveling too fast. I just want to soak it all in.

When I get my new comp and dsl, I am definitely trying dark age of camelot.

okay dokay..

Hopefully this is fixed

Miphnik is buying his own DAOC game tonight, and we have my video card all fixed now after tearing my pc apart last night (grrr)..

(p.s. HP Pavillion is really not an easy PC to upgrade)..

So we will be around killing things on the beach, I'm taking a liking to those villanous youths and skeletal minons at the moment ...

See you all online!

p.s. Thank you to Fallow if you post here, the spells were awesome

Rhain go to the Guinivere server.

It is one of the two rp servers.

FF11 is coming out with multi-player? : erks:: I hope it'll be good! The only reason I bought PS was because of FF. There hasn't been a good one since FF3, FF9 was semi-decent.

This dark ages of camelot game sounds cool, I might pick it up too. I've never played a graphic multi-RPG before, just text ones. Is the background story based on Authur's period?

Bianca reg

Okay Miphnik and I are both on the Guinivere server, but having SERIOUS disconnect trouble...its really frustrating. We have broadband, so we are 'fairly' sure its not us. Anyone else getting booted a lot?

I'll keep an eye out for you Hiway if you keep an eye out for me. I'm in Connla, but heading to the 'city' to get my tradeskill in tailoring or something interesting. Miphnik is in Howth being a menace to badgers..

See ya in there tonight!

Haven't had any disconnect problems really yet. A total of two times I have disconnected playing and was able to jump right back on.

Are you guys sharing a IP address with a Lynksys or something? I haven't tried that yet and was going to do that once I got Ellie a better graphic computer setup. Oh got my new GeForce 3 card today. Side note I really didn't notice any problem or slow down with my old TnT2 card though. Was real happy with it's performance.

Oh I am an Albion (for non players that is like Scotland/England/Wales) and am a highlander paladin.

So if you are on the same server and on a different area like Hibernia or Midgard lemme know. I want to try out Midgard I think (Scandanavian countries). A norseman would be fun, especially after watching 13th Warrior a bunch.

Anyway if you are on another realm then it would be fun once (yep a ways off for me) to partake in a little Keep taking/defense in the Frontier regions. I have been toying with starting a character as a Hibernian, as a magic user or archer maybe (elven).

Hope you get those tech issues sorted out. I guess I am being lucky so far in my history of computer saga's. For once things went smoothly for me.

Hiway/ Valore Creed for now.

reg

You lost me at IP....

We do have two different IP addresses, I'm not sure they are linked, but half of me wonders if we are running something in the background that we both are completely unaware of that continues to boot us off at will. I did notice it happened much more when we were both in the game, than when its just me...

We are in Hibernia. He's a Magician or something like that...I didn't get a good look at him. I'll be in the main city (according to the map) and we finally bought the guide (20 dollars!!, thank God for Best Buy discounts)..

Can you communicate between realms with the /send?

you should get Ellie going!!

reg

p.s. I just found out that the new graphics card Miphnik installed for me was the Gforce one also..it screams in color..I love it..

We got a deal on it though 49 dollars open box item!

okay I'm putting down the coffee now.

I am way impressed with the lighting effects with the new GeForce 3 card I got. It also came with a free Sacrifice game the one I got. I do notice however believe it or not with the higher detail and lighting effects that sometimes very briefly in DAOC a small slow will happen. I didn't notice that much with my TNT2 card. I do notice a much better improvement next to buildings and walls. I don't see myself melt into the side of walls anymore and can manuever much better.

I don't know about the /send command to other realms. I never tried it.

I do think though the /who should work though to see if they are there.

I would love to set up my joystick to work with the game, but from what I can tell there is no gameport joystick support. I do have an older one that has some buttons that can be programmed that I might try, but that will take some major motivation for me.

The interface so far of mouse/keyboard is easy enough. Just took a little getting used to.

Finally got Valore into chain armor (at level 10 you get this ability for Paladins). He can now craft it also which is nice. I noticed a huge difference with it on and now my two handed axe is hitting better and my chant (spell) is really kicking in.

I have been running around doing a few tasks and exploring some of the farther flung areas. I am enjoying the quests also. Once I get done with those I like to use the looking for group feature and hunt. I notice in groups learning experience is super fast, especially at younger levels I hear.

What kind of GeForce card did you get Rhain?

Also that is good you have two different IP addresses from what I understand. I would check perhaps with your provider and make sure your network at home is connected correctly.

Do you have cable modem or DSL? I have cable and haven't had any problems yet, BUT I haven't set up a network either though.

Ok Turkey is in the oven, even stuffed the bird. Will play a bit before company starts showing up.

Hiway

reg

Well, I ran into all SORTS of Gemstone players in DAOC this weekend. That was fun

Lots of 'mystery' players though :P

Miphnik did a tracer on the server and apparently, since we live alllll the way on the West Coast, we make 26 hops to the server. Chances of one of those dropping are pretty good. ugh.

So, for now we live with it. I wish for a few things in DAOC. I'd like a beacon for the gravestones, those things are like needles in a haystack. I wish there was a flashing bright light that mentioned your weapon is about to become beyond repair.

I wish I could FIND the tradeskill masters in the main city. I can't seem to figure out where they are.

Other than that, I'm having a blast

You could try some sort of key-binder, that might help. Then again, I don't know what joystick you have or how DAOC handles joysticks and keyboard setups. reg

I have no idea what that means. I have a Microsoft forcefeedback and also a Thrustmaster F16 FLCS one that can emulate keyboard commands which does work. Now if I can find the way to program the darn thing then I might be going somewhere. The actual movement of the stick is through the game port, but might due to programming addressing could emulate the fwd/back/side arrow keys perhaps. I don't know.

The game interface is actually super easy and doesn't require lightning fast reflexes like some first person shooters.

I did an amazing quest involving spiders today and it scared the bejeezus out of me when the bad guy came. No kidding I yelled "YIKES!" and about had a heart attack.

I haven't had that good of immersion since Daggerfall. I was doing the quest with a guy who is playing a cleric. We had a blast riding horses through the deep spooky forest.

We both came away with some nice additions to our armor also. The neat thing about quests in DAOC is everyone joined in the group gets the necessary items automatically sent to their backpack inventory, so no camping and crowding occurs.

Item jealousy is pretty much nonexistant and more suited to individual taste. You can dye pretty much anything for a in game currency fee. Oh all the "cool" colors (black/purple/etc) cost quite a bit more than the others. Guild insignia, yeesh, way expensive now for me at least.

Rhain, just ask on the broadcast (like GS amulet thoughts) who perhaps is the master of the craft you wish to train in. Once you learn the name you can ask any guard in the city by typing /where *first and last name* and the guard will point where you need to go(make sure you first have them highlighted by clicking on them for the name to go yellow). I did that a lot at the beginning when I was doing armorsmithing consignments and delivering them to the various NPC's around town. It is a good way to build up some coin so you can buy this or that.

Hiway/Valore Creed - Highlander Paladin reg

This is good to know, I bought the guide so I have all of the names of each trainer, but I had no idea about the guard...

I'm really enjoying this game...

Who?

I swear, I ran into someone named Laranaa with a last name similar enough that I asked if she played GS. Wasnt her.

I'll have to post a screen shot or two here from this weekend -- First visit to the frontier for some serious RvR. (We were slaughtered -- No, not just Tammy and I but like 50 of us. It rocked)

I killed a purple kobold last night in one on one combat. That shocked the hell out of me. It made it so much better that it was a Shadowblade and was stalking us. Killed Tammy's character though.

Btw, I suspect a lot of the disconnect problems you were having was because of your old video card. How much RAM do you have?

Just wait till you can fight in RvR. I swear, I've not had this much fun in an online RPG in years -- Maybe never. I mean, I'm sitting there last night with that kobold after us and the adrenaline was just flowing through me. I'm sitting at my computer shaking like someone is holding a gun to my head. :P

Oh, by the way, I posted on the VN boards and someone posted that Jesh is playing. Dunno what realm though.

What the heck is going on with the quotes?

Anyway, I thought the discos were from my video card, but we bought a brand new one that screams..Its a Geforce IPA (if I got that wrong, try not to laugh too hard)..But anyway, its 64 mgs..

I think its because of the amount of hops we take all the way to the East Coast server...:/

I had a few people send me special messages that didn't confess who they were in Gemstone, I think I'm the only moron that uses her Gemstone name in there, besides the husband.. ha ha.

But I collect them on my friends list (which is a very nifty feature)...

One day I'll be able to raise the dead! Hopefully I can go on those RvR trips after that!

reg

Saw a guy named Cynric the other night, but it wasn't the same one I knew who was a fellow officer in Phoenix. Seemed like a nice guy though.

I haven't met anyone in Albion (Guinivere) that admits to playing GS. Which may be good perhaps.

Made level 15 and got some nice chain leggings from the Church for killing a (well let you that haven't played and will to find out for yourself).

Won't be awhile for me to resurrect. Paladin's get it at 30 specialization in chants. I am planning on training in Chants to match my level so I can get that as fast as possible. Just too nice a feature to have out and about. Long walks...

Hiway - Valore Creed the highlander paladin reg

Wardens get the lesser rez spell at level 10...

That's weird, I'd think a Paladin would get this faster than I would...

Maybe I have the wrong idea of what a Warden is, besides a earth shaking GM...

reg

Warden is a great guy.

I hope he can maintain his sanity. I really liked playing with his character before he became a GM. Real good personality and didn't read into comments.

Hiway reg

This game is pretty decent. Good game play so far. Although I found the controls and game interface were hard to get used to. I still prefer Asherons call and Everquest over this game when it comes to controls and interface. With the new Everquest expansion coming out on Tuesday I believe the graphics in EQ will be much better then DAoC.I also feel this game lacks the fantasy element that only Gemstone and Everquest have ever had. reg
I now also play a Scout named Deuce. I am having a ball with the longbow.

There is range in this game. God love it! Gemstone and ranged weapons... well...

Hiway reg

Still lovin it!!

People are whining about playing Wardens which blows my mind, if you want to fight like a tank...BE A TANK, not a WARDEN...sheesh..

I'm just excited that I can kill blues AND raise the dead...

Purty sweet

reg

Yeah I hear the same from guys who play mercenaries in Albion. They want to dual wield and wear plate it seems... I like the balance so far.

Been toying with a Thuergist also lately(elementalist/wizardly like character for the Gemstone crowd). He specializes in air magic that can summon air sprites and other aimed attacks.

Hiway reg

Have you delved into RvR yet? I'm not old enough to do that yet, one thing I can't wait to see them fix is the horse system, I'd like it to have a stop in each city, or at least ones that make sense!

I've spent more time hiking around in that game getting killed by ambushers, than actually killing for profit

reg

I just turned 20th level where you can teleport I think to the other realms frontiers for classic keep attacks, but from what I have read and heard you are just fodder at that level.

Being a scout fits more into my alternate mood when not playing my group paladin in RVR. When just wanting to poke and withdraw and cause confusion the Scout is going to be a hoot. That longbow can really reach out and touch someone.

You can technically go out into your local frontier areas and be subject to all sorts of dieing by wandering rangers or such I have heard.

I have just had too much fun wandering around the different areas/dungeons meeting people yet to go do it.

Oh, the horse routes seem pretty good to me if you use the /dismount command. You can get off at any town it seems even if the ticket you bought goes through it to a further destination. Once I realized that it made my life a whole lot easier.

Hiway (Valore Creed and Deuce) reg

WHAT?!! LOL! There's a dismount command? Good lords, that would have come in handy had I know that, and I even have a book..Remind me to get this blonde out of my hair soon.

Well I've decided that killing things isn't all I want to do, so now I'm in Tir Na Nog learning how to create items...now THAT is fun..It costs a bundle to learn the skill, but I'm excited!

Are you on the Guin server? Do you know of any great guilds to join once I've got the hang of things? I know Katt is in one she loves, they are strict roleplay..sounds good to me, but I'd like to gain my bearings a bit first before I gang up so I know what I'm talking about.

20th level? Sheeesh, I need to get a move on.

reg

20th level in a month. The big key is you level extremely fast in a group of eight.

I made three levels in a few hours when younger in a group. Especially when the creature is purple to you.

I haven't really joined any guilds yet. I never was a fan of the concept in other games. I just found them to be "gang like" attitudes that propel ooc chit chat and slang. I would like to find or even make one perhaps that promoted RP, maturity, and well thought out Realm vs. Realm warfare.

My pet peeve is poor communication and in general poor organization. I hunted with a party that was the most perfect yet the other night. I had a blast. Well balanced and people who used that stuff between their ears. To top it off no lame EQ terms like MOB, inc, con, aggro blah blah blah.

Hiway reg

Well, just from the comments you two have made (Rhain & Hiway), I bought the game. I haven't installed it, yet, and I can't find the guide. I read the booklet that came in the box, and moving around looks a little confusing. It's probably easier once you get in there and actually do it. GS was the first game I've ever played on a computer, so going to "graphics" will be an adjustment.

Well, if I ever install the darn thing, I'll probably be asking a ton of questions.

It's nice to hear that you two are having so much fun!

Summer

reg

I can't wait to see you in there Summer!

I know what you mean, Hiway, about finding the perfect hunting group. You can't really hunt with those that are TOO much older than you, because they don't gain a thing, and same if those in the group are too much younger..

Miphnik is playing a Mentalist, I'm amazed at the spells. I did notice one Enchanter cast a spell on me that enchants my weapon, my gods that would come in handy in a group!

Summer, come to Hibernia on the Guinivere server, I'm finding an awful lot of Gemstoners there

reg

This is tough...

Still trying to find a midgard guide.

I'm on the first server...

Midgard...

I'm a kobold rogue...

reg

Awesome game.

I'm officially addicted.

Hiway

Nah I'm on one of the first servers...starts with a B...think Baro or Baros or something.
reg

Excellent site for guides...

http://camelot.stratics.com/ reg

That would be a reason to do RvR even though I know a Warden is basically like a bull blanket with a giant target painted on it.. I'd love to SEE a kobold rogue! I only see Celts and Giant soandsos...

Can I also just say that I killed a lough wolf the other day and almost started to cry, that puppy crying noise is almost TOO much for me..

Miph was mentioning that Mentalists have a new All area spell that dishes out damage over time, which will come in REAL handy in RvR...

Can't wait!

reg

I know that sound of other monsters is different too. It always makes me laugh a bit. I know what you mean by the wolves though. I love dogs in real life so I couldn't make my character kill a wolf pup or such.

Omni try to get that name of the server you are on. I was thinking of trying Midgard soon as a Thane or Warrior. You can't mix characters on a same server though because they want to discourage people spying for Realm warfare. I know that can be worked around with someone who goes so far to buy another account and computer, but it helps.

I do wish some more neat sounds will be added though. I find a lot of this game is a visual Mud with a lot of roleplaying left up to your imagination by typing emotes and such. It's easy for us who have played games like Gemstone. I constantly get /sends from others saying good job and asking for help on roleplaying. And I am in no way uber roleplay man.

Let us know how you are doing Omni and if you have any questions. I won't be much help on Midgard specifics, but in general I got a pretty good grasp now of how things work.

Have fun!

Hiway reg

Well...

I guess I'm a quick learning.

I came to the Guinever server Hiway. Now I'm a kobold hunter. (Hunters have the ability to use ranged weapons for everyone else) So strange...

I use a two-handed greatsword sometimes...yet sometimes I use a bow and arrow. I've seen archers in Dark Age of Camelot and it seems that they basically rule.

Ya...come on Hiway. I've found several guides for pretty much every profession here in Midgard...and I know my way around

Got to level 5 again today with a different character in about 3.5 hours. Just figured out about tasks and quests...they make quite a difference

PS Addiction is horrible.

Greaaaaat. Another game I'm going to have to look into.

A friend of mine has been poking me for weeks to play it. Now with all the talk in here about it, I may have to suck it up and try it afterall.

It's just that after playing Everquest which I didn't enjoy after a while, I'm apprehensive about trying another graphic roleplaying game. Although it does look neat. Is there any comparing the two? reg

You know, I tried EQ for about a day...the graphics were making me motionsick..so I didn't really get to give it a fair shot.

I think if you are a die hard EQ fan, you won't be too impressed with DAOC from what I hear just because DAOC is so new, but it has a lot of potential.

Since I'm not a die hard EQ fan, I'm completely entranced by DAOC. The moving around and combat is enjoyable but still hard. The AI is simply amazing, and the quest system is spectacular.

There is always SOMETHING to do in there, even if you don't want to hunt.

On Guinivere, I'm finding all sorts of people talk to you and actually take the time to roleplay..even if its just a simple bow or curtsey as you pass by.

Love it!

reg

>>Are you on the Guin server? Do you know of any great guilds to join once I've got the hang of things? I know Katt is in one she loves, they are strict roleplay..sounds good to me, but I'd like to gain my bearings a bit first before I gang up so I know what I'm talking about.

I'm really liking the guild I joined. One of the leaders, Lachlainn, is just an amazing role-player. Obviously a veteran who knows exactly what he is doing.

Actually, we have recently had some additions to the guild who are under level 10 -- So there'd be hunting and grouping options for everyone. Not to mention the 'big guys' get together and help out the younger characters on a regular basis.

Rhain, if you need armor let me know. Send to me anytime if you have questions or need armor or whatever. I can make decent armor -- I only wish I could make some that I can actually wear. :P

<>

It won't always be this way though. I hunted Siabra Seekers a few times with our group and they have wonderful exp though.

<>

The Fianna, the guild I am in, is nothing like this. RvR organization is one thing we do need to work on a bit though.

<>

See you on the battlefield.

<>

They have mean cousins though...who aren't so friendly at first.

<>

<>

I didn't play EQ, but I did play Asheron's Call -- Nothing alike. At least not on the RP servers. You might find 'd00ds' on the other game play servers though.

There's a lot more to do and its much more nitty gritty then other graphics based games. Ie: No uber weapons, no portals, no in game maps, etc.

<>

If anyone is interested in finding out more about the Fianna, you can go to www.thefianna.com

You can't post though, but there is more there then just a BBS.

I can only make things grey to me, do you have to master the skill before you can make things you can wear? What about repairing weapons, will I ever be able to do that? Is that weaponsmithery?

reg

My character Valore can armorsmith but in Albion. He can make alloy scaled plate and will soon be able to make fine alloy.

Deuce is working on fletching and can finally make the second grade of broadheads which is nice. I messed up a little and didn't do consignments at first because of the reward vs. the work. I just kept training in making arrows so his leather and cloth working skills are lower than normal. I can fix it now at least since his fletching is only 200. Just making tailoring items he can advance both leather and cloth pretty cheaply.

Yep. Rag dolls just come up as question marks, yep. Same with the puppets and stuff -- They're just there so you can keep your skill up to par with your other skills.

>>I can only make things grey to me, do you have to master the skill before you can make things you can wear? What about repairing weapons, will I ever be able to do that? Is that weaponsmithery?

No, only smiths can repair armor and weapons. Be sure to do that too!

You don't have to master to make things you can wear. I bought a carbide hauberk that was made by someone who was grey to me. :P

I thought only smiths can repair weapons and armor too, until someone told me about the

/repair

Now, how to use it, I have no idea. I had to select an object and it showed me attempting to repair my blade, but said I failed in doing so.

So I thought maybe I needed to have more skill in weaponcrafting or something.

I'll have to look around and see if maybe I just got some bad info on it.

reg

I know you need to drop the item on the ground first to /repair it. You drop it on ground. Then select it. Then type /repair.

Yes depending on item (armor type, weapon, etc) I think it depends on your skill in that sort of area. I heard a rumor half the skill to repair as to fashion it. As far as magic items I think it is level dependant. If you try to repair something higher in level than your character you will not be able to do it.

The smiths will also repair magic jewelry and items.

Hope that helps.

Before anyone goes and tries to use this (though I don't think many will) I'd think twice about it and be very careful. Mythic might consider this as a form of cheating and they WILL terminate your account.

None of this warning crap like Simutronics does, boom -- You are gone if you are caught cheating and/or hacking.

Some release notes regarding a hack over the weekend stated that they terminate 3-5 accounts a day.

Careful what you ask for. I'm out there a lot now. Actually, yesterday Tammy and I were heading out into an area of the Hibernian frontier where no one normally is -- Willow's name flashed across the screen as killing someone.

[This message has been edited by Dustin Brookthorn (edited 01-22-2002).] reg

The only reason I haven't really succumbed to buying and playing this game is because it reminds me way too much of Everquest. Even though I'm sure it's not the same, it appears to be and I grew bored of it rather quickly.

What are the differences that may sway me? Everyone seems to be in awe of it and I'd consider it if I knew it were worth trying and not just to be one to go because it's the popular thing to do. reg

DAoC and EQ are VERY similiar to each other. I've played both and I too tired of EQ. It seemed it was the same thing over and over. Find monster, kill monster get powerful items.

My impression with DAoC is that the developers took all of the good things about EQ and then added refinements to it.

Things I liked specifically is that items (armor, weapons etc) wear out. Also, items just like creatures are on a scale. The color grey being the low end of the scale and purple being the high end of the scale. If you try to use an item to high up the scale then it will wear out faster.

I also like the trade skills. You can actually make a living off this skill. Not a huge living if you sale the made items back to the NPC merchants but you still make a small profit so that in the long run you are making enough to pay for your raw material expense.

Some creatures are what I term "social" creatures. By this I mean that when they are getting attacked and hurt to much they will yell for help and nearby creatures that are friendly to them will come to their aid.

Quests, these are a very well done point for DAoC. There is actually an ongoing storyline in DAoC. You can aquire different quests at each level. I believe there are 10 different quests per level. (not sure though). Each quest, when completed will leave you with a bit more knowledge about the local history, some experience and at times items or money.

The Realm vs Realm side of the game offers a nice twist to addressing PvP concerns. Fight people from other realms instead of fighting people within your own realm actually fosters the want to help others around you.

The economic system of DAoC had some good ideas behind it. If you're starting out and haven't been "twinked" by an older character then you're not going to really make alot of money till you get to be pretty high in level. Once you get to be higher level though money isn't a need.

reg

I couldn't stand EQ, but I can't shake my DAOC addiction

I can't explain why, maybe because the worlds are small enough to see/meet/greet and befriend people, maybe because I've noticed a LOT of Gemstoners in there, and that's including an ex-staffer turned Mythic staffer. It just has that community feel to it, it caters to those whiny 'gotta win' players on other servers and keeps the roleplaying to the roleplayers!

I've yet to run into someone not willing to roleplay.

~Rhaindrop "Guin server, Hibernia, 12th level Warden"

reg

Percival, Albion.

Buckwheet reg

Any Hibernia Nimue players?

Level 20 firbolg druid there

Just wanted to see who I could mess wit'! reg

I haven't found the roleplayers in DAOC yet. I've seen a few people here and there try to start something, and it went alright, but it wasn't something that I got too much enjoyment out of. I did have a lot of fun exploring, there are some neat graphics.

The battle system isn't what I'm used to, but I'm trying to like it. I had a lot more fun playing an archer/caster then I've had trying to be a druid or a warrior. The melee part just doesn't interest me.

I need more to do, pressing 3 buttons and having your character kill the critter itself isn't any fun.. I need more to keep my attention.

Not trying to moan and groan too much, just trying to adjust I guess... Anyone else have any comments... thoughts to keep me goin?

reg

Do you group hunt?

I've found hunting in groups is a lot more fun. I have a cleric/healer, so for me my attention has to be focused on the group, and making sure I don't run out of mana, or at least warn everyone in time. And the others have to make sure that not only are they ok, but that the beasts haven't agroed on me either. We can take on higher level stuff, and it can be fun to RP in the group, although I don't see quite so much RP as I'd like. I think that will improve tho as you get older, and away from people who are just learning the game and the commands. I think that joining a good guild will do wonders for that as well.

I'm looking forward to getting a wee bit older before I can start RvR.

Aerienne reg

If you're bored because you don't have enough to do then you'll definately want to try a mentalist over on the Hibernia realm.

DoT's, AoE DD's, Heal's, Charms, dying, Mezzes, Buffs, did I mention dying?

As mentioned before grouping is a great way to make sure you have plenty to keep you busy if you're playing a support class.

If you're playing the Hibernia side and want to mix up a bit of being able to melee and cast spells I'd suggest either the Warden or Druid class. They get to wear higher than cloth armor, nice weapon style selection and they're in high demand with groups for their ability to raise, buff or heal. reg

Lemme tell you that I almost gave up on DAoC here recently.

I was level 10 for about 3 weeks as a firbolg druid.

Then I decided one day just to mess around...got in some great groups...took me one week and I'm 20...nearly 21 now

All it takes is getting good groups really. That's what makes it fun. Originally I thought that it was going to be very hard to gain relationships in DAoC...that all changed when I was made recruiting officer for the Council of Shadows...ever since then it's been awesome. I've got people that automatically send me a tell whenever I logon wanting know if I can come hunt with them and help. That's what makes the game fun.

I think grouping in DAoC just makes the entire experience _that_ much better reg

I think I'm the only one posting anymore here.

Anyway...

Got to level 30 hibernia nimue with my druid.

Yesterday I get pissed off because of how stupid my guild is...so I go off onto midgard on the merlin server (The most populated normal server). Lemme tell you...talk about power-play.

I get in...and I'm level 6 in 2 and a half hours.

In 2 days I'm level 12. As a kobold hunter. And I'm hunting and some guy just hands me 100 g. I was like...uhm...ok...little bit different from an RP server

Anyway...

Would love to hear where everyone is...

I'm the following:

Ziz - Hibernia Nimue
Iio - Midgard Guinevere
Vaiio - Midgard Guinevere
Oddball - Hibernia Nimue
Saul - Hibernia Nimue
Exray - Midgard Merlin (I know I'll get slaughtered for that one)

Oh well hope everyone's well...I'm havin' a blast...and it's 5:30am...time for bed !

And my cleric is now 25! ::cheers:: reg

Hey, im interested in starting this game, could anyone either respond with some tips for gettin started or instant message me? or maybe the manual self explanatory... havent purchased yet...
Moken reg
Tips...

Be nice to people, make lots of friends. You have to depend on the other people who are in your realm. Whether it's defending a territory, doing raids and stealing artifacts or anything really. The entire realm has to work together to accomplish things.

Grouping is one of the best ways to advance. If you get a good group of players who pay attention and work together doing what they're supposed to you can have a blast. You'll also advance quickly because there is no wait time to learn in DAOC. If you kill something, you absorb that experience right away. The only thing you'll have to wait on is your power if you cast, or your health for everyone else. There is also an endurance field that ties into some abilities: Sprinting, Using weapon skills, etc. It works just like your health and power fields, but recovers quickly when you rest.

So far every person (but 1) I've met has been very helpful with any questions that I have. The mayor of one of the towns actually gives out a lot of money on a regular basis to help out new crafters.

Crafting by the way is the ability to make a certain type of item, be it a weapon, shield, armor, cloak, arrows, bows, etc.

DAOC is very different from GS, I played on and off for a month before I really liked it. One day everything just clicked and now I can't get enough.

The minimum system specs you'll need to play Camelot are:

If you have a Pentium II:

PII 450
256mb RAM
600mb free hard drive space
32mb 3D accelerated video card

If you have a Pentium III/IV:

PIII 450
128mb RAM
600mb free hard drive space
16mb 3D accelerated video card

(Please note that Voodoo 1/2/3/5 cards are not supported in Camelot, although Voodoo 3's and 5's may work).

The recommended system is:

PIII 1ghz
256mb RAM or higher
32mb 3D accelerated video card
reg

I know, Omnirus. Read that already. I was wanting Y'ALLS' opinions on a minimum system required. I don't want a system that'll just run it... I want a system that'll run it well enough so that my play isn't hindered incredibly. I'm on an Ethernet connection, by the way too.

P3: No problem.

500 Mhz: Should be ok, DAOC eats CPU, so you won't be running the fastest but I think you'll be alright.

Nvidia Graphics: You might need to update your drivers from the Nvidia site, but other then that, mine works fine and I think we have the same thing.

128 RAM: Should run, but memory is pretty cheap now. If you afford another 128 sim I would get it, but you probably can play without it.

And on the other hand, I could be totally wrong, but I think you'll be ok.

I played once at work on a 2000 box with 128 RAM, standard video, P3, my graphics were a little fuzzy, but I was also using the utility from exploiter.org, which causes some lag between the graphics. Win 2k is also not supported by DAOC (Should be damnit) but DAOC runs fine on a new XP box.

Though ive never played doac, just as a rule of thumb, the minimum specs are about 25% lower than what a normal person would want to put up with.

And if Dustins right and its cpu intensive, (which looks like it by the jump from the minimum to recomended) you might want to wait till you upgrade your computer.

Thanks for posting all that good hardware info. I've been thinking about trying DAOC myself lately. Especially considering the new price hike. Now I know I need to get a new machine before I get the game. reg

I think it will work on the older slower pc's just fine, they support 95 and 98...
you just won't run at the maximum you could be running at.

what ya'll think?

My computer's a 1.5 Ghz 1024 SdRam - Not bragging.

But whenever I'm burning a CD while playing DAoC it tends to skip. I'm on a cable modem connection as well. It's kinda funny...but a lot of the game is actually already on your computer when you use up the space from your HD for the game itself. I'd say in general...your computer's HD does a lot more work than the actual modem line.
reg

I was able to play DAoC in PvE with livable results using the following:
K6-2 350Mhz
128mb sdram
Xtasy 64mb AGP video card
Windows XP Pro
Cable modem

Much better though with:
Athlon 1.33Ghz
256mb sdram
Xtasy 64mb AGP video card
WinXP Pro
Cable modem

The big issues I experienced with the K6 was the game would "pause" when coming into busy areas (towns or other highly populated areas for example). There was also the problem of people with better systems and creatures being able to outrun you. Main reason with this was low frame rates. reg

I've been thinking about getting a new video card.. any tips on what to get? How are the graphics with the Xtacy? reg
I broke down and HAD to try it. I haven't really figured anything out yet, especially how to move and everything. My computer isn't doing too bad except for the occasional disconnection because of my crappy college's LAN. But if someone in Albion on Guinevere would help me and show me around, I'd be in forever debt. I'm Maliku.

thanks!

A good idea:

If you wanna learn how to play fast...go to a normal server...after being on the normal server switch over to the RP servers.

I'm not on an RP server...I'm trying to get into a certain guild on Merlin/Midgard (www.the-combine.net).

If you want some help and come over to Merlin/Midgard shoot me a /send to Exray. reg

The Xtasy in my opinion is a good card. I had an ATI 128 Rage Pro (16mb) before. Upgrading as much as I did really made a huge difference in how smooth the game ran. Mine is an AGP card. I put the PCI version in the wifes computer and it is preforming great as well.

I can't give you any frame rate comparisons but for the price ($70 aprox) I think you'll be happy with it. reg

And all this time you thought your first couple months of GS were addicting reg

Yea no kiddin, at least i got my bro playin with me so we aint goin crazy with it. Just figured out how to fletcher and got 400 skill in that, and that damn mithras tomb really pisses the hell outta me i always die there and cant find my damn grave. Havent had many great group huntin experience, i runnin into way too many morons heh but besides that this game is really incredible, Its such a nice change to be playing a non broken game reg
Mithra is not a great place for group hunting. It's the first spot people really start doing it unless they have other characters. Hence, they don't really know what they are doing, and how to protect THE GROUP, rather than themselves. Keltoi is where people really learn the art of group hunting, and what your character is really good at, and what stupid crap not to do. At least, that was my experience.

Aerienne reg

I like these 21-25 and 25-29 battleground areas...neat idea

Havin' a blast @ 29...but damn you Alb's! Your Highlanders act like they have more HP's than our tanks. reg

There is not enough time in the day to play as much as I'd like to!!!

Not leveling very fast, but I can't wait to see what realm vs realm looks like. I'm definately enjoying myself though!

reg

We do Omni...

Not to mention we have really large weapons like like to eat things.

1000 realm points after 2 days.

Mainly Albi's reg

You know...

Those of us here who play on the Guinivere server should find a place to get together, take some screen shots, and then kill each other! Heh.

I hate the notion of dueling in the game because it is just RP farming, but I can't resist trying to meet with everyone from here and taking some pretty pictures.

And Rhaindrop, whenever you and Mipnik want to go to see the frontier, let me know.

What'cha think?

Mipnik?! I knew I had a doppleganger out there! Now I have proof in writing!

I'm up for it anytime... I know the dergans will miss standing over my body and laughing...and having a Mr. Ed type (Whistler) laughing over me as well is just... humiliating.

The Clepto Cleric reg

Wow, lots of you folks playing over there huh.

I'm Thredh, level 33 Warden on guinivere in Hibernia.

I'm there more than GS now. Gimmy a send if ya see me reg
