Final Fantasy X

So who's got their copy reserved for the December 18th nationwide release?

I've personally reserved my copy, reserved a BradyGames strategy guide and ordered a GameShark for the Playstation 2.

I have just cleaned my PS2 and I'm in the process of setting up my living room. I toyed with a couple of the speakers on the back left side of the room that were giving grainy sound... got those fixed.

I have my S-Video plug-in for my 52" digital TV. For flawless picture quality.

I have a 2 week supply of drinks and snacks (mostly Snapple Rain, Zima, Mike's Hard Lemonade, Barq's Root Beer, Totino's Pizza Rolls and Flamin' Hot Cheetos.) My chair has been moved to the center of the living room... and most importantly of all, I have the house mostly to myself for the duration of my gaming experience.

I've notified my friends online that I wouldn't be around very much until I completed the game, but I'll still make time to speak with my lady.

So how about you, boys and girls? Any of you made any preperations?

What may end up being the greatest game in the entire Final Fantasy series is coming out, and I'm gunna play it soon!

I'm stoked!

I personally dislike challenges. If I had the option, I'd pull a lever in GS and make Klaive level 500. I don't want the challenge of hunting, just the levels.

I don't find it rewarding to toil through something and finally make it. I find it more rewarding to bypass the hard work and rise to the top immediately... and then, as a god, proceed through the other aspects of the subject in question... in this case, video games.

I'm getting the game for the graphics, the story, the fun factor, the music, the game play and the interesting looking characters... not for challenge. What fun is a challenge when you *know* that you will overcome it? All it becomes then is an annoyance.

Maybe I'd feel proud of myself if anything could present a worthy challenge to me and I overcame it... but up until now, that hasn't happened yet.

My friends and I make a pack pretty much that no one can use a guide/internet/shark until we have beat it and only can these items be used in order of completing a video game. I am sure Johnny has his vcr all ready to tape the fmv's. I on the other hand will not be able to pick it up until after the new years. For one of two reasons. I will not compete with them. Thats was has ruined other gaming expierences with em. So I simply will just enjoy the game. Two if I start playin I might get addicted and not be able to spend new years eve/day. But yes I am going out and purchasing some supplies for post new years that maybe thought of ffx survival nescerarities.

I'm not looking forward to FFX. As I've said time and time again, Square is run by a bunch of now money hungry jackasses. Their games are no longer made around quality, but marketing. The ONLY squaresoft game post Chrono Trigger worth playing was FFT (which was brilliant).

If that PS2 has component outputs, you'll get an even better signal... (that's a red, blue, and green plug)...

I prefer the journey, not the destination. Which is probably why I'm such a Legacy of Kain fanboy, even if the games have absolutely no closure. (endings: "Please buy the sequel when it comes out!")

Also, mods, shouldn't this be in the "Video Games" topic? reg

Yes, got it the day it came out actually... being the fan of the original that I was.

I used no cheats or guides and found the game to be child's play.

But I'm sure there are some games out there that will challenge me. For one thing, I adore playing chess by myself. When you do your best against yourself, it's always a challenge and you always improve.

Even the "hardest trick"? I never had the attention span for that.

Unfortunately, Lufia 2 is still the hardest game I can think of off-hand. Which, not counting "hardest trick" and the special dungeon mode, isn't saying much. reg

Vagrant Story was mediocre at best. Xenogears was VERY, VERY overrated. Final Fantasy 9, while the best FF on playstation in the series (not counting tactics), it still wasn't that good. I've played games like Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, FF1, FF2, FF3, FFT, Lufia2, and other older school RPGs literally 8 or more times through each. I played FF9 through ONCE, was satisfied at best with the character development, story, ending. The battle graphics and most of the music was absolutely horrible. They probably could have just randomly placed colored pixels on a white background and come up with just as good backgrounds... About the ONLY song from the game I bothered to DL was the Beatrix and Steiner music. Overall it was no classic; it simply meets the appeal of the FF7+ gamer with impressive fmvs. I really wish FF7 had been and old style game and kinda flopped, that way it wouldn't have attracted this new school group of RPG players that don't care about music, characters, or story.

SNES was by far the system with the best games. The gap between it and the next best system is amazingly wide.

Anyone ever play Dragon Force for Saturn? Oh man that game was awesome.

I never cheat in RPGs the first time through, so I ended up just skipping the hardest trick when I played it the first time. That was really difficult.

The hardest RPG I've ever played by a LONG shot is 7th Saga. Another great game that I forgot to mention in my previous post.

Forgot all about that. Also, I'm getting a GBA:

Tacics Ogre: Knights of Lodis (aka Tactics Ogre Gaiden)

[This message has been edited by Gnomad (edited 12-17-2001).] reg

Looks like a great game Gnomad... A more cartoonish Tactics. Oh yea, Brigandine for PS was another really cool game. I liked the Dryzt overworld music best.

Sonic reg

The 7th Saga rocks. It was my very first video RPG.

I went back and played some older ones after, but The 7th Saga started me off on video RPGs which lead me to adore RPGs in general. I dare say if not for The 7th Saga, I wouldn't be in GS today. I'd probably be doing various drugs in my spare time instead.

I didn't know anyone else had played The 7th Saga though. Ever notice my PLAY.NET username is Lejes? Hehe.

Anyway, as for "the hardest trick", it wasn't that hard. I found the dumb bird tower in E.V.O.: The Search for Eden to be the hardest thing I've ever done in a video game. But I got it after a few tries.

As for Square's triumphs in recent days, *I* loved Final Fantasy VIII! I don't care if you people didn't, I thought it rocked. The ending made me cry. It was all sentimental and beautiful.

Final Fantasy VII was good. I loved the chocobo farm. And Sephiroth was god. But honestly, it just wasn't up my alley.

Final Fantasy IX was really fun, though too short. If it had been done a little differently, it would've been .

Chrono Cross is, in my opinion, the greatest video RPG of all time. Chrono Trigger was amazing and I feel that Chrono Cross was a worthy sequel that not only lived up to, but exceeded the original. I fell in love with this game. It reminded me... and it brought me home for a while. Believe it or not, this little game inspired me and uplifted my spirit... hell, it may have saved my life.

Final Fantasy Tactics was fun, but the story sucked. I just liked changing classes. It was alot like Tactics Ogre (which was no where near as good as Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen).

Honestly, I used to be an "old schooler" when it came to video RPGs. After FFVII, I was like, "It looks nice... but... meh."

I was a total advocate of the SNES-era video games. I felt that the new generation of video RPGs had no "soul". This disturbed me deeply. As weird as Breath of Fire II for the SNES was... I felt its "soul". That is why I enjoyed it. This game didn't call out to me... it had no "soul"... or so it seemed.

When I saw the ending of FFVIII, I knew that I was wrong. When I saw Kid's eyes when she was standing on Opasa Beach in Chrono Cross, I felt her emotion and I saw her soul.

She was real. The world was real. The magic was back and it was here to stay.

All it took was a little getting used to. This may not be the case for everyone. For some of you, the era of decent video RPGs may have come to an end... but for me, a new era has just begun.

That tower was pretty dumb.

I consider FF7 average.

Interesting... I, on the other hand, hated this game. I thought all the characters were absolutely retarded save about 3 or 4 of them... Glenn, Viper, Fargo and Lynx (who was kinda dumb anyway). I thought the story line was loose, horrible battle graphics (nothing pisses me off more than crappy 3d) overall just a weak game I thought.

Well I almost fell outta my chair reading this. Without a doubt, Final Fantasy Tactics has the best story in ANY video game EVER. It honestly is not possible to logically dispute this. Granted I didn't fully understand the story until about the 3rd time I played it through (and routinely checked the Brave Story to read the continually updated character profiles) that I really began to appreciate the story this game had. I seriously still have a problem believing my eyes when you say it had a bad story. That is like saying PS2s graphics suck compared to gameboy.

I agree, I forgot to mention both BoFs earlier. Definitely classic games.

All in all though Klaive, you obviously have played your share of good RPGs, and definitely have founded ideas with regards to experiencing the games. It's always nice to see someone that has played games like Chrono Cross and can compare them to games like 7th Saga. If you really didn't like the Tactics story, I HIGHLY recommend playing it again, and paying close attention to the story. Also, you can review old cut scenes and read up a bit on each character in the BRAVE STORY (its an option on the world map.) The amount of deceit, treachery, backstabbing, etc makes this story a total masterpieces. It's really awesome how everyone is 'using' everyone else however Delita, one of the most unsuspecting characters ends up being the one that comes out on top and is almost assassinated at the end. It was pure genius. I also like it a lot when the main character is not the hero. This was also the case in Chrono Trigger were Frog was the Hero. CT was yet another of square's pasttime masterpieces.

Sonic reg

I shouldn't say Tactics' story sucked. It didn't. It was nicely done. However, I've never been one who enjoyed political stories involving war and such things.

I'm much more a Party RPG person. Where a motley group of friends sets out and saves the world or what have you.

Tell me, Sonic... have you (or anyone else reading this) ever played The 7th Saga 2: Mystic Arc? It was quite the confusing game as it was in Japanese. I decoded most of it, but sadly there's only so far you can get with a language that you don't know.

I reached a cave with a weed in it. I didn't know what to do with the weed. It was quite frustrating. I tried to smoke the weed, but that did nothing. Then I tried to pull the weed, that didn't work either.

But regardless, what about such games as Secret of Mana and Secret of Mana 2 (Seiken Denetsu 3)? I enjoyed both immensely. What about off-beat games like Secret of Evermore, EarthBound, Illusion of Gaia and Star Ocean 2?

I found the alchemy system in Secret of Evermore to be quite innovative. I also liked the game, though it was a bit strange.

EarthBound had 8-bit graphics on a 16-bit machine. But the bizarre story and the amazing sound effects were just... wow. The game took me someplace I had never been before and I loved it.

Illusion of Gaia... what can you say? So odd, so bizarre... but so memorable. Just thinking about it makes me nostalgic. Transforming into Freedan the Dark Knight made no sense whatsoever... but I thought it was cool. And then hamlet sacrificed himself for the starving children. It was terribly sad.

Star Ocean 2 wasn't that weird I guess... it was for the PSX and had SNES graphics. But honestly, the story was superb and the side-quests were insanely numerous. My favorite part though, was that you had a romance factor and could be with anyone. You could even arrange it so that two girls or two guys in your party got together. My main character would always get with Precis, but that's because I was sooo in love with her. Hehe.

I've played quite a few obscure games I guess, just curious who else has.

It made a lot of sense. Illusion of Gaia is part of a trilogy, it's the second game in the Soul Blazer trilogy. (If you've gotten all 50 of Gem's Red Jewels, you'll fight a boss from Soul Blazer)

Pretty much, the whole light/dark thing makes a lot more sense once you play the first game, although I haven't finished the third, lack of time.

Soul Blazer -> Illusion of Gaia -> Terranigma

And Secret of Evermore had the best humor of all time. reg

Never played 7th Saga 2, however I did play SD3. I thought the graphics were incredible, but that was about it. I didn't really like that game too much. IoG was fun as well, and I, apparently unlike everyone else liked SoEvermore.

The best RPG on NES was Dragon Warrior 4. A very rich, elaborate game.

Definitely. I agree with you.

I don't buy games anymore, I can't see myself forking out 50 bucks for a game I play once and then leave there to collect dust. I just nabbed Parasite Eve from a friend earlier though. Pretty weird game.

THIS GAME IS SO AMAZING THAT IT IS BEYOND WORDS!

Woo! reg

7th Saga...is that the one where you have to go around and gather runes...has like one monster character, one robot character, one swordsman type, etc?

Also, does anyone know if there's a limit to how much blitzball you can play? I just won my second tournament and the blitzball option is greyed out when I go to a save point

-Lombrosis, more late posting reg

Well for me, my favorite FF ever has to be 7, I remember falling in love with the characters and the plot. Next to that its gotta be FF 3 (the American one, so 5 in Japan I think). And last, but not least, the award for the best RPG ever: Lunar 2.

Rarnd, split open and melt.

-FF 10 is really cool, I haven't purchased it, but I have watched my friends playing. I love how ps2 has brought back 2D fighting, Guilty Gear X is soo much fun. reg

Well my favorite FF so far is 8...I loved the graphics, how the characters actually looked like people instead of midgets or toddlers, the movie sequences were awesome. Story isn't really that big of a factor with console games with me, if I want a good story I'll read a book . FFX is competing with FF8 very closely, I love the blitzball game, but one thing I don't like in video games is voice acting, especially when you can't go through the dialog as fast as you can read it(or skim it). This one's bosses also seem to be a lot harder than the previous few, I'm not sure if I like that or not. I definately don't like it when there's nowhere I can take a break from being killed by the boss and play blitzball(which is the case at the moment).

One other thing I don't like about FFX so far is how they seemed to be trying to dress the characters as dumb as they can...I mean what's up with the one greaved and gloved arm and apparently half-metal half short thing on Tidus? And the cacophany of belts that seem to be part of Lulu's skirt, not to mention her nearly impossible cleavage. And don't even get me started on Wakka, ya?

[This message has been edited by Lombrosis (edited 01-03-2002).] reg

Yeah, playing an rpg for the story, that's just insanity...
