Inferno

i tried to play inferno.. signed up and stuff. they still havent replied been over 4 days reg
Don't know what to tell ya. I know there are only two people who issue accounts - those are the two main Admins Kaaz and Malifax. Usually when one is busy, the other is available (during the day and early evening hours). So it's possible that this was just a bad week and your account was delayed as a matter of just plain bad timing.

Hope to see you there though! If you're willing to divulge the name you picked for your account name, I'll send up a report when I login and see if one of the Admins can check for your request.

Desh,

Is inferno supposed to be a GS spinoff? I think I tried it awhile back, I remember it being like a free mud, but can't quite recall. reg

Nope, not a spinoff, and not a free mud. The originators of Inferno didn't come from GS or any of the Simutronics games. It's not a medieval game, though it has a medieval "flair" to it. It's considered "high fantasy" - but not connected in any way shape or form to the Tolkein, Wheel of Time, or D&D off-shoots.

It has *some* similarities to GS, especially some of the verbs and verb structures. The chargen (mangler in GS lingo) resembles the DragonRealms chargen more, though it is still much different. It has a fully implemented engagement system for combat, and Inferno is entirely skill-based. That means no professions you're stuck with. An example of a rollup:

You pick a first/last name, gender, and race first. Some races can only be one alignment or another - such as titans, which can only be light, or umbriani, which can only be dark. Alignments are religious and societal oriented rather than the "chaotic lawful" or whatever stuff from the D&D games.

Then you roll the stats - which go up and down with levels so they really aren't NEARLY as vital to viability as in GS.

Then you pick an archetype. These seem similar to professions at first glance, but in GS if you pick "wizard" that means you *cannot* ever learn a sorcery or bard spell. In Inferno, the archetype merely sets the "cost" of training in every skill the game offers. So a "mage" will have 4 of the 6 magic realms set to cost only 4 builds each (builds are like training points), and armed weapon and martial arts will all be set at 8 builds each. A mage will certianly be able to train in warrior skills, but it will cost them double the training points to do so. A necromancer mage will be perfectly capable of training in sorcery magic if he wants to, at the same cost as his usual necro. The only problem is, the more he branches out, the less focused he is, and the less "oomph" he'll get in his chosen focus.

In addition, Inferno offers crafts for people who aren't into hunting to advance. Crafters can make leather or metal armor, weapons, clothing (including pocketed clothing), carve bows, make jewelery and carved containers and staffs and wands and even headstones, and cut gems to increase their value.

A warrior can learn any of these craft skills if he wants, but if he cuts into his "normal" builds it means he'll be neglecting his primary warrior type skills.

No one is "unviable" in Inferno. Reason being, you advance just by being in the game and attending events. So even if you don't train in a single skill or use any skill whatsoever over the course of the 6 years the game exists, you WILL advance. But in a case such as this, advancement will be meaningless of course...since you don't need to advance in order to simply RP.

There is no "bard" or "ranger" skill/magic realm.

Just so many things that are not even remotely similar to GS, that you might just wanna take a look at the website and read about it for yourself. It's at www.ke9.com

Do yourself a BIG favor though - if you do decide to give it a try, read the manual first. Sooooo many GSers (and MUDders from some of those free games) have come in and expected Inferno to be "just like every other game" and ended up falling flat on their faces or embarrassing themselves with their mistaken arrogance and "RP knowledge."

Inferno is a hard-core roleplaying game. Ther is no OOC in the game *at all,* with the exception of whispers surrounded by brackets, done mostly by veteran players to help out newcomers with mechanics and such. There's also a whole OOC *area* when you first log in, 9 or 10 rooms where you can hang out with other *players* and where your character doesn't even exist.

Being "unresponsive" is strictly forbidden inside the game part of the game, and that doesn't just mean being AFK. It's any time someone tries to have a conversation with you, or one of the GMs sends down a bunch of emits to test you, or anything else, and you aren't paying attention and don't respond some way or another. There's even an "ignore" command if you want to let the person know you're intentionally ignoring him...so that isn't even an excuse

Scripting is allowed - because players are expected to be paying attention. Players are warned - and reminded if needed - not to take OOC information into the game, and not to take IC roleplayed situations personally.

If you and I are buddies out here in BBS land, and you roll up a lightlander and wander over to the darklands and meet my darklander character, my character is GONNA give your character a hard time. Not because I have a problem with you, but because darklander **characters** are enemies with lightlaners **characters.**

Jeez I'm rambling. I do that when people ask me about Inferno. Sorry! Go read the manual.
