Um, go D'backs? reg
Here is a short story.

Respect for other teams. I used to really like the Denver Broncos, even when they were not that good. I went to school in Colorado and saw in full force the fans that were overzealous and overconfident in a team that is based on money. It soon wore on me and I started to really hate the Broncos because of that. I relished when they would get beat severely in the Superbowls and Elway would choke.

Since moving away and after fans being humbled, Elway learning patience and determination then my respect returned.

I have always loved the Yankees in the past.
Please don't make me hate them.

Hiway reg

Being from Chicago...and an avid Cubs fan (yes they are quite possibly the saddest saga in baseball), it is in my blood to be anti-yankee. I'm tired of seeing the yankees win all the time...just as I'm sure everyone was when MJ was @ the top of his game and no one could touch us.

However, with the events of the past months, I _do_ feel that this year's yankee fan deserves a championship...and that the yankees this year are playing with a totally different spirit. reg

As an die-hard New York Rangers fan, I can assure you that money is not the only factor in making a good team. Anyone wanna take bets on how long until Lindross it out for the season?

Oh, and go Yanks. reg

My comment about a professional team based on money wasn't specific only to the Broncos.

Professional sports in general usually are based on the power/money of the organization.

College sports are much more interesting because so many factors are used in winning: Team spirit, school legacy, personal pride, scouting, and many other factors.

Ahh damn you for making me feel guilty about gloating! Heh : P

But one thing you said I did find interesting..you made a point about "a team based on money." Wouldn't you say all pro sports teams are based on money, though? In general, look at the salaries these guys make. How many million a year just to play a "sport?" Now don't get me wrong, I know there's a lot of hard work involved. Being a professional athlete isn't just picking up a bat and hitting a ball, or throwing a basketball through a hoop, or hitting a puck into a net. There's a lot of strenuous training, physical and emotional sacrifice (these guys often live out of suitcases, they can't be around their friends and families as much as a person should be.) Granted, they should be paid for that, but whatever point whatever million a year? Isn't that a bit ridiculous especially when you consider these firefighters and police officers who put their lives on the line everytime they punch in on the clock, making maybe $60,000 a year at top pay? I don't know but I think it's kind of unfair to label a few teams who spend their money on acquiring top players when it's pretty much most athletes who demand these huge salaries..and at the end of the day who's giving the professional sports teams all kinds of cash to spend?

[This message has been edited by Weedmage Princess (edited 10-23-2001).] reg

The amount of money athletes make is absurd. They don't deserve more than like 300k a year at most. I'm sickened when I think of much how these people make compared to what they 'earn.'

Sonic reg

Sorry Omni..but the Cubs are only second in comparison with the RedSox as far as sad sports stories. Dude we last won in 1918 lol.

Mike

Zanagan/Zarosa reg

Lol, 1918? Damn. It's the curse of Ruth!

Sonic reg

People can complain about professional athletes and rap singers salaries, but the reason they get paid that money is because they can. Professional sports brings in so much revenue, and if it didn't go to the players, where would it go? The already-rich owners?

As long as people are still willing to pay 150,000 dollars to sit 12 feet from a nearly middle aged basketball player, and still willing to shell out 50 bucks a month for cable, and still willing to pay 200 bucks for a jersey, athletes will still be making millions.

'lood reg

A salary cap would go far toward making the game more interesting and less top heavy. Say what you will the only reason the Yanks go so far EVERY STINKING YEAR is because they have the most money to pay the players. It's not much of a competition then, it's just who can buy the best players.

------------------
He who laughs last, didn't get the joke. reg

Even though I disagree with how much they do get paid they do put there body on the line for what they do. The could die, hurt themselves where they cannot walk, not to mention all the other pain and sufferin they can go through. It is also very emotional. The ones who make the big bucks are watched by people twenty four hours a day. Anyhows I do not like the idea of them getting payed so much, but just in there defense.

Also I hate the Rangers. Picking up Lindros was purely to bring fans back in. Lindros never was that great of a player in the first place and yet he is concussion prone. Just like what happened with the Islanders, pick up Peca, who sits out a year cause he has his head up his ass and then they sign him and he gets a concussion. He his not worth a dime that is payed for him. He stinks extremely bad. The only reason he was descent in Buffalo was basically because of Hasek. They had no scorers on the team so he put up his normal 20 goal seasons.

Lord Deprav
I hope everyone realizes the Red Wings are the best team in the NHL. reg

Yes Lindros is concussion prone, but he is one of the best players around. Don't knock his playing ability just cause he's fragile.

Agreed..with Dominik Hasek now in goal...Red Wings are pretty insane.

Mike

Zanagan/Zarosa reg

Yah know since I have watched Lindros in the league he really has just been a disapointment. I figured he would turn into one of two people. Either a Rick Tocchet, who is a very physical player and puts up plenty of goals, or a Mario Lemiux, which I have not seen any sign of it. Eric Lindros is a big boy and he never has wanted to play the physical which all big boys should do, yet he hasn't ever led the league in goals. I just dont comprehend. Anyways Zanagan, congratulations. Boston finally got rid of Alison who was worthless in the first place. Yah got 2 goons and Murray from the Kings. Boston just has improved. Watch out.

If they didn't earn it, the owners wouldn't be able to afford their saleries. People pay to see the players... play.

Quite frankly, even making it to the major leagues is an amazing accomplishment. reg

The business behind the Rangers is pretty simple. They have a team in New York City. People (suits, mostly) want to see the famous Gretzsky/Messier/Lindross/Big Name Big Salary Hockey Player. Rangers cater to this crowd, make all the money they could ever want, but don't build a good team.

But I'm still sticking with 'em.

Also, on another note, if anyone is going to be at the Devils v. Bruins game on November 3rd... I'll be on the ice during one of the intermissions, the team I'm an assistant coach of doing the "Mites on Ice" thing.

Exactly, we (well the people who enjoy sports entertainment and buy tickets to the game, sports paraphernalia, etc etc) are the reason there is so much money to be spent on the athletes..and if for some reason that was to stop, their paychecks would be quite less.

As far as the Yankee's budget, I was reading numbers somewhere (I think Sports Illustrated) and I thought I also heard someone mention on this board (could be wrong though) that the Red Sox budget (ahem, ahem Zanagan) isn't that far behind the Yankees..and well all I really have to say is 1918..heh...also the Diamondbacks had/have quite an impressive sum of money to spend..but then again they are the NL Champs.

Allison is gone huh? I haven't heard the news yet. Bastard was holding out for like 8 mill a year. Good player but he benefits more like..when he is actually playing heh.

Mike

Zanagan/Zarosa

reg

Trust me Boston got a much better deal on it. Murray and Stumple are both decent players. The Kings needed someone to lead there team since the lost Robataile and Blake within the last year. So it does benefit them but the only reason Alison stuck out so much cause of how horrible Boston has been the last few years. If he played for a better program then he would just be average 20 goal scorer. reg
What's really sad is that my best shot at a national championship for one of my teams is the CLEVELAND ROCKERS.

I mean, does WNBA EVEN COUNT?!

Ticks me off something awful.

Go Browns, Bucks, Tribe, 'Jackets!

I donno man, I can see Allison putting up 90 points a year on any team in the league. If with Allison, Guerin, Samsonov, Thornton, LaPointe, Eloranta as our first two offensive lines would of been nice. I Didn't realize Murray and Stumpel are only 29 though, seems like they've been in the league forever heh. Well Allison plays tonight against Tampa Bay so we'll see how he does.

Mike

Zanagan/Zarosa reg

You want something sad...how bout being a Dolphins fan. Nothing like watching your team play like a contender for two weeks...then fall apart. Oh, and Nindy...have a little faith...the Browns actually look really good this year, well, at least compared to the last few years. reg
While we're talking sports...I hate the BCS poll. College football was better off before. Sure there should be a 1 vs. 2 game...but why not just use the polls that were already there? One more hint of who I'm a fan of, they got the shaft last year too.... reg
Yeah, I'm pumped about the Browns. I was hoping they'd win 6 this year, now I'll be angry if that's all they win. I was hopin' for the playoffs next season, now we only need 5 more wins. . .

Browns have come a long way.

I remember that I used to cringe when seeing on the TV a Brown's vs. Bengals game.

That was the definition of ultimate boredom. I wouldn't force anyone to watch that game in the 80's or 90's. Sheer torture.

I am enjoying the new Browns. And ya gotta love the fans. Some true loyal football fans.

Hiway reg

Browns had some decent playoff years back when Bernie Kosar was QB etc..If I remember correctly, Pittsburgh would always kick them out of the playoffs heh.

Mike

Zanagan/Zarosa reg

Since you mentioned them...the Steelers D is back and they look good, them and da bears. reg
Kordell is awesome too at QB..::cough:: ya ...heh, he hands off to Bettis well tho!! reg
Don't bash on Bernie.

He is a mullet god.

Yay go Browns!

Lord Deprav
Who us to support the dolphins until he realized how worthless they really were. reg

The Dolphins aren't useless!! They just like to toy with our emotions...will we play good...will we play bad...I think that they only play well when someone has Fiedler or Smith on their fantasy squad and happen to be playing me.

Tridanth

I love the direction this folder has taken...more football talk then baseball, and the series starts tommorow...MUHAHAHAHAHA!!! reg
