Combat participation?

How many of you (assume for a minute that you are in shape and capable if you are not) would willingly participate in combat in defense of your country if you were called upon? How many of you have?

Sonic reg

I most definitely would.

I'm joining the military in another 2 years, after I finish up a few things I've been working on. reg

If my country was being oppressed by a country like the United States(or a country funded by the United States), I'd certainly think about it.

Color me a suicide bomber.

I thought Fralcon was the moderator in this section.

Been there, done that, Alfie. I lost a finger in the service. How about you? How deep is your patriotism?

reg

Not an American, but I will be joining the reserves this year in Canada.

Assuming I was capable and eligible (I've never been either of those in my entire life)...

I would probably join the peace corp. I will not ever, for any reason, take up arms against another human being.

R
reg

I would definitely. If an eminent call ever came up, I'd sign with the quickness.

I figured you did. And I'm not sure this is gonna mean anything, but I genuinely appreciate your service and sacrifice. I've a respect for veterans that regardless of anything else, never wavers. As much as I question your politics and sometimes logic, I consider them secondary to other things. And as for my patriotism? Well, everything will be on the line soon enough... but I'd rather not expand on that at this point.

Sonic reg

true defense, yes.

i'm willing and able if it stays on us soil.

Navy, 2 more years...SEAL? I'll be trying.

[This message has been edited by Siefer (edited 04-05-2002).] reg

I would but I'd want to be in the tactical portion of things rather then the fighting end. I don't want to kill another person, let alone have them trying to kill me. reg
I'm glad no traitors have yet surfaced who would flee... It's kinda strange, but I asked this question during the summer and the response was very different overall.

Sonic reg

That's because of the question the last time you asked. It was right after 9/11 and you wanted to know what we *will* do - in our present situations, if the attacks turned into a war within the country.

I said I will flee. Reason being, I am not eligible to participate, nor have I ever been. The military won't take someone with a hearing impairment and degenerative disk disease. The peace corp won't either. And I'm not about to sit in my house waiting to die.

But in the current question, you asked - IF we were eligible and capable - what would we do? And I answered honestly - I'd join the Peace Corp, if I was eligible and capable (which I'm not).

R

reg

No, it was a least a month before 9-11.

Sonic reg

I was willing before, and did ROTC. I'm willing now.

Aerienne reg

Aerienne, Army?

Sonic reg

Been there as well. 8 years Air Force. reg
If there was an aggressor attacking the country, then I might. But if it was to help wipe the middle east of the face of the planet like bush is attempting to do now, no. I'm a pacifist. reg

That is the thread in which I said I would probably join Fralcon in Canada. The topic name was Attack on New York, and was started by Buckwheet on 9/11.

I know there was one way before that... It actually may have been June because I think it was before I went away.

Sonic reg

Army. I was going to go MI, and then go for the JAG scholarships, but for some reason, every time the recruiters for the Branch Orientation talked to me, I heard something different. I ended up in the hospital at Camp Challenge, and dropped it. After hearing from 2 recruiters that what I wanted would be no problem, and from 2 others, that it would be impossible, I decided to go my own route. I am strong supporter of the military.

A little joke I heard from my Dad:

How do you know when a recruiter is lying?

His lips move.

Aerienne reg

How do you know when a recruiter is lying?

His lips move.

Ain't that the truth.

In my senior year of highschool, I went to go take an exam for the Navy to see if I qualified for their nuclear program. The recruiter told me it was just a no pressure test, just to see how I would work out for it. So the recruiter drives me to Seattle to take it, but there were other things I wasn't told about, like blood, UA's, and hearing/sight tests too. After I finish those, I take the exam and pass.

The minute I get my grades back (still at the Navy center), I've got this LtC following me around with paperwork for my enlistment. I'm like, 'Hey, I thought I was just taking a test', and he goes, 'Why are you here if you're not going to join? You just took went through the whole enlistment process.'

And that's the reason I'm not joining the Navy.
reg

::chuckles::

I also had something similar happen Taernath. They came to my high school offering the ASVAB test (the vocational aptitude test), and being the senioritis infected junior that I was, I welcomed the opportunity to get out of math that day and took it. It was 6 years and 3 moves later before they stopped calling asking if I wanted to enlist yet.

Funniest part is I never got my scores.

Aerienne reg

As much as I think it sucks, it's the only way they can get people to join nowadays.

I'm a product of that program, Taernath. It wasn't too bad really. Other than having to enlist for 6 years rather than the usual 4, you'd spend most of your time in school rather than at sea. Although, I have to say that recruiters will lie about nearly everything. I was told I'd be home from boot camp by Christmas. I made it home on December 29th. I was told the median income of nuc-trained people going into the workplace after their 6 year hitch was $70,000 (this was in 1978, by the way). They, of course, didn't know about the death of the nuclear power industry just about the time I got out; and that it's basically impossible to get a job in it now. Heh. C'est la vie.

I would fight, have a brother that just got back from Kosovo. Really want to join the service, but i have a 3 year old son i see every other weekend and any less time than that would be to hard on me.

You want the truth?

When we fight we don't fight for mom back home, we don't fight for the flag, we don't fight for the country, we fight for one purpose. To keep that person in the fighting hole with you alive, and he does the same for you. When rounds are coming down range that person next to you will be the only thing keeping you going. No matter what your intent going in that will be the train of thought during.

Your gonna hate this, but here is how I feel:

Those that join during a time of conflict/war generally do so because its the band wagon thing to do, just like all these people that rushed out to put flags on their cars. It says "See I am a patriot too". Guess what defense of freedom is not only done when it's in the lime-light or the "in" thing to do. It's done all the time. Patriotism, honor, discipline, they can’t be taught over night, they don’t just occur when an event happens. These feelings and character traits are instilled and cultured over years, but bottom line is some have it some don’t.

In answer to the question: I am currently serving in the military, because I feel it’s every able bodied persons duty to give at least 4 years to the service of our country, blood was shed to give us these rights and freedoms we have today. Honor the fallen. And just remember one thing those of us that serve give up the rights so many of us take for granted.

Retreat hell, we just got here!
