Alice In Chains Lead Singer Dead

SEATTLE, Washington (CNN) -- King County authorities said a body found in a Seattle residence has been identified as that of Layne Staley, 34, lead singer of the rock group Alice in Chains.

The partially decomposed body was found Friday in Staley's home in the city's University District, King County Sheriff's Sgt. Cameron Webster said.

Investigators performed an autopsy to identify Staley, said Monty Nelson, an official with the medical examiner's office.

He said the cause and manner of death will be determined after more investigation.

Alice in Chains formed in 1987 and was prominent in Seattle's music scene, which included "grunge rock" groups such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.

Fans in Seattle and Boston were organizing candlelight vigils and memorial ceremonies to pay tribute to Staley, according to postings on the band's Web site

Hmm, I know nothing about the band and in fact only recently was told that it was one of their songs that I have loved a while now.
"Man In The Box" is a great song to listen to while driving even if the lyrics are a little weird Heh.

My condolances to any real fans of theirs out there though. reg

As I've said before in other places...

I'm sorry that he died, but I have no sympathy. reg

Well the latest I just read was that it was either 'natural causes or an overdose' but apparently he's been addicted heroine--I feel sympathy for people who die like that, wasting their lives on drugs (I'm not including marijuana here) ...they're really killing themselves but just can't seem to stop--total addiction. The best thing you can do is just stay away from that stuff. It's just a shame they didn't have the insight/willpower to not get mixed up in it the first time around. reg
It's a shame he died. I grew up listening to his music on the radio when grunge was big, and in video games (can we say Doom 2? ). Oh well, he brought it on himself. reg

If you saw any of his appearances or heard some of his music, he glamorized his heroin use. reg
Ewww. Partially decomposed body?

I used to live in the U-District. It's mainly student housing and apartments for the University of Washington.

Sad to see people die like that, when they have talent, and are successful, and blow it all on drugs.

Somewhere in the world someone who actually helped save a life, protect you, teach a child or nurse someone back to health died and who gets the spot light? A drug using musician. Don't get me wrong I love music and am a huge huge music fan but still I think our focus is shifted. Everyday people who make a real difference die and they do so quietly. Life goes on.

That's true, Anticor.

Remember when Princess Di and Mother Teresa both died at around the same time? In my area, Di got news special after news special (and still does), while Mother Teresa got a short article on the second page of my newspaper.

Don't get me wrong, Di did some good things, but Mother Teresa spent her entire life helping those who truly needed it. reg

I'm aware of his music and how he has even done entire songs talking about shooting up.

It's always very sad when anyone dies. That's someone's child, maybe brother, sister, father, mother, grandparent, cousin, etc.

I just think any type of senseless death is a tragedy, especially when it's drugs. People are so gifted in so many ways, but lack the insight to see that dealing with that garbage is going to do absolutely nothing for them. People die everyday, some of natural causes or illness, others are killed or kill themselves--whenever anyone throws their life away with drugs (be it a musician or a janitor) it's a tragedy--that's my point. reg
