Help with my new cleric

I have been playing around a bit with the stat checker and spreadsheet programs I have... I ended up building a Sylvan Cleric off the new 620 stat base. He reaches all 100's at level 120. Here are the stats:

CO 73
DE 79
DI 53
LO 53
IN 67
ST 78
RE 67
CH 67
WI 30
AU 73

This is, of course, after bonuses and all that. Here is his training at 1:
1x Armor
1x Shield
1x CM
1x Blunt
2x Spells
1x Mana Share
1x Physical

At 6 he begins 1x Multi-ops every other level, and at 16 he continues it for life
At 21 he begins 1x Climbing for life
At 25 he begins 1x Swimming for life
At 38 he begins 1x Brawling for life (Wanted to choose an extra weapon type simple for redux purposes, I could use another skill however)
At 42 he gets redux.
I plan on doing COL.

My questions would be: A. Does this training plan look good? If not, what should I change? B. Do I really need 1x share for life or should I quit at 200%? C. When does armor cap (so I can dump it in favor of another skill) D. Is it possible to "lose" redux? Like if I start tripling in spells, can the penalty acctually get so high it causes my redux to go back down again (I don't know the actual formula for redux... I just know what skills go in it) and E. Should I take brawling even though it won't help me simply because of it's value in redux, or should I choose another skill instead (I noticed that if I take brawling as opposed to pick pockets my redux is a bit better).

Any questions/comments/suggestions would be welcome, and you can IM them if you wish.

Bombsonengland reg

Well for one...

I'm amazed that the system is actually going to work well as I've seen you set it up.

I'm also impressed with your training. It must be nice now knowing that you don't have to train in lockpicking or disarming anymore. I wish I would've known it from the beginning now with my 94 ranks of lockpicking and 78 ranks of disarming. What a complete waste.

MO is incredibly nice too. I haven't even started training in it yet and I'm 137. I _do_ think that 2x mana sharing is going to be completely vital down the road. For some reason I don't know why I feel that way...but somewhere I read that repelling might be based off of mana sharing skill. I'd train in mana sharing 2x every level if I could...which is what I'm doing right now. I'm also training 1x spell aiming every level from now on.

reg

Yea, I knew the system would be alright simply because its a 620 that you have COMPLETE control over. As for 2x mana sharing? I personally say no way. Unless I missed something, there is no indication that I've seen that would require ANYTHING above 102. However I think going .5x or .75x would be smarter. I'm also against spell aim. I've seen a rift age cleric with 1x spell aim, it was useless. Get it if you want, I'd go 1x spell aim before I threw the points into triples too however.

Sonic reg

Maybe I am stupid.. but since when did clerics start getting redux?

Also Id leave out spell aiming, and I would make sure and get perception, and first aid.

Id say climbing and swimming and brawling are useless to do for the rest of your trainings.. brawling isn't helping anything.. and you don't need that many ranks in climbing and swimming to be proficient. 50 each is more than enough..

Of course.. that's unless I am mistaken and clerics can get redux..?

Heres my cleric.. hasnt trained in like 6 months. Am I lazy or what?

And me maxs pretty late, at 140.

Also.. hunting characters with stats placed for maximum growth, is really really hard until they get old.. like 50-60. Most people cant or don't want to take the time/effort to do it solo.. so they have slaves to help out. reg

Forgot to mention sylvans have one of the slowest SP regens there is. reg
A stop light flashed in my mind when I saw Sylvan too, but it's certainly not going to be a career ending decision. If you decided to go Sylvan for RP reason, good choice. If you choose Sylvan for optimization, bad choice.

Sonic reg

I wasn't going to bother with Spell Aim anyway, since I plan on swinging mostly to hunt. Also, Sylvan Clerics acctually have the lowest GI cost out of any class in Gemstone. I posted something I did awhile back somewhere in the stat optimization thread... basically, I put a 0 in every stat, and then checked when it would reach 100 for every race and profession. I added up the total of the levels (I.E. Dwarven Clerics hit 100 dex at 955 with a 0 in it) and checked which is the lowest... Sylvan Clerics were the lowest, with Halfling clerics being the closest runner-up. I could try building this as a Human or Half-Elf as they are both also very low, but I don't think Halfling or Dark Elf (Numbers 2 and 3, respectively) would be very good choices as smaller races are hard to play at the higher levels (at least from what I have read here on the boards... my oldest character is 28) and Dark Elves don't have the kind of stat bonuses I want. I have also been rethinking this a bit, and I might want to have a higher Wisdom. Apparently from the spreadsheet I have, I won't have ANY many whatsoever until level 10. Although I do have a "Slave", (I.E. I have another account to help him hunt... and no I didn't buy it or anything, I brought him from 0 to 28) having a low amount of mana could be painful, as he won't be able to cast the AS boosting spells until his early 20's. I'll play with it a bit, and try building a Human and a Half-Elf as well.

Bombsonengland reg

Oh... I also forgot about this, but I believe any profession CAN get redux as long as they have the correct training and the like... but for spellcasters (anyone who 2x's spells) it is incredibly difficult because there is a spell penalty involved. However, his 1x CM and Multi-ops as well as a second weapon type offsets that. Not sure about this though, as I have never had a character with redux. (my rogue is only 18) reg

Actually the penalty exponentially increases with each spell up the list.

Having 1 spell in a single list (1 x 1) = 1
Having 2 spells in a single list (2 x 2) = 4
Having 20 spells in a single list (20 x 20)= 400

This penalty also accumulates over each list.

So for a cleric to have redux, it would require keeping your spells down in each list.

Further help can be found ingame HELP under I believe DFREDUX.

Thanks for the information Krylan.

I myself was looking into the possibility of a cleric having redux.

I think it could be possible only if you decided never to use CS based spells and only rely on your arm.

Currently I don't think a cleric like that would survive to long, but I could be wrong.

Just seems that once cleric get to fire mages and above swinging becomes almost non-existant.

Yep, except for one tiny correction to the formula, which can make for an even bigger difference.

If you have 20 spells in a single list, the penalty is 20*21 = 420. Just a minor correction, the point however remains:

SPELLS KILL REDUX

- Lord Kranar, human Archwizard reg

Yeah... I notice that now. MY friend pointed out to me that the spreadsheet I was using doesn't take into account spells at all. So he won't be getting redux. Oh well. reg
Let there be light.

Sonic reg

Oh and Buckwheet, you ever try, as a cleric, to cast a CS spell at a fire mage? Heh, you still swing for those.

Sonic reg

Actually yes I have.

Blind and bind worked rather well both times.

I heard lots of clerics blind their way through mages and group hunt. I am sure some still swing, I personally have done both, bind then ambush, and also just blind them and let a rogue remove their head.

Buckwheet reg

Ya...

Clerics _used_ to be able to blind in mages and sprites and gain a bunch of experience...that's all changed now.

Clerics also _used_ to be able to bind aivrens, then ambush their heads (If you had sufficient ambushing) on Plane 3. That's pretty hard now. I remember seeing Jamousii running through Plane 3 using this tactic.

After that...I don't know of any time I've used my weapon other than to slaughter a deadly kobold or rolton outside the north gate. reg

Still possible to hunt 1-3, and n'ecares on 4, just blind and sneak.

A small wooden sign sits before you, ancient writing scrawled across the surface. Just behind it, a huge pit extends deep into the ground. An unusual silence hangs heavily over the area, broken occasionally by a metallic squeak from the pit. Looking inside, you see thousands of small, grooved metal rods imbedded in the walls rotating slowly. The further down the pit extends, the more narrow it becomes until you can see no more. You also see a rickety wooden staircase.

I'm a few years older but you can still do that around 115 or so provided you have enough ambush. reg

I think a mainly warrior like cleric would do fine untill about level 80.

Then you would start having some problems, and lots of problems after that.

Not to mention the supposed downtweak to hiding and ambushing.

Buckwheet reg

How about multi-ops? Do you think it would be viable to do one of the focused strikes on things at that age? I am really interested in swinging clerics at around rift age, seeing as this guy doesn't peak until around 100 or so. Also, I have set up a human cleric who hits all 100's at level 119 or so. Here are the stats:
CO 65
DE 87
DI 33
LO 54
IN 65
ST 65
RE 79
CH 79
WI 34
AU 79

Training would be about the same. reg

Oh.. thought of something else too. Since I dropped brawling, I will end up with a ton of extra TPs at around 40 or so. Would ambush/hide be a good idea, or since I am doing multi-ops should I even bother? Or would another skill be good? Also, I am thinking about trying to make an optimized character for every profession (based on stats only at first.. Ill work on the training later) but that will definetly be very time consuming. If anyone would like to help, drop me an IM.
