Debate

I got a nice debate.

One that will definitely bring some very interesting ideas/opinions, etc.

I remember a long time ago reading on the GEnie boards from Krakii as to why dwarves were better than giants as a race selection (highlighting higher poison bonus, capacity of carrying, weight, SP regain, natural bonuses, etc.)

Was wondering what everyone thought about dwarf vs. giant. You can of course include statistical growth...but I _do_ think that GI's are a totally different debate.

Would love to hear from everyone.

Of course...I'm a half-elf...so my opinion on this matter is small <chuckle> reg

Seems like its kind of a tossup to me. But the added HPs of a giant are real appealing to me personally.

For the cleric profession? Dwarves are the best, giants are a close, but definite second. Humans come in at third. Everything else is worthless, the better choice being halfelf though.

In terms of overall race ranking, here you go:

1. Giant, overall the best race. Great HP, strong, good SP regen.
2. Dwarf, second best race, great SP regen, natural warding, ST, CO, etc.
3. Human, third best HP, good SP regen, all around better than average.
4. Half-elf, still good SP regen, basically a lesser Human.
5. Sylvankind, horrible SP regen, bootleg HP, ok dex and ref, who cares?
6. Dark Elf, horrible SP regen, pretty bootleg HP, good dex and ref, but again, who cares?
7. Elf, horrible SP regen, I hate this race.
8. Halfling, great SP regen, weak as hell, almost no HP, just a very stupid race in general.

Certainly all these races are viable and definitely possible to have very solid character with any combination of race and profession.

I personally believe giants are a bit better than dwarves if you decide to go down the swinging cleric route. My new cleric, Lavosspawn, is a giant mstriking cleric. Dwarves have a terrible dex GI when they are clerics, and while Giants also have a bad one, it is much better than a Dwarf's. I think if you are going to try to optimize your stats, giants are a better choice. But then again, the oldest cleric I have ever had is 5 reg

Personally I think Dwarves are better than giants for a well-rounded cleric, but you may find a giant do better if you're a pure swinger simply because they can hit heads and necks standing and +5 AS over dwarves.

Spirit REGEN comment: According to the race selection table when creating a character, there are 3 different speeds of spirit REGEN.

Speed 1: Fastest: 4 spirit every 3 minutes on node, 2 spirit every 3 minutes off node. Halflings AND Dwarves.

Speed 2: Medium: 1 Spirit per minute on node, 1 spirit per 2 minutes off node. Humans, Giantmen and Half-elves.

Speed 3: SLOW AS HELL: 2 spirit per 5 minutes on node, 1 spirit per 5 minutes off node. Ugh. Elves, Sylvankind and Dark-elves.

Back to the subject: I'll provide all the info and you can decide for yourselves.

Giants: Can ambush heads from standing, without creature being prone.

Giants have a total of 55 hit points over dwarves, assuming maxed phy train and maxed CO bonus.

Giants in medium SP regen category, dwarves in fastest category.

Dwarves have +5 to logic bonus and no modi to intel = a little better than average absorption. Giants have no LO modi and -5 to intel, which puts their absorption off node behind dwarves by 10 (10 bonus not exp) off the bat, assuming same stat placement.

Dwarves have automatic +40 to elemental TD, +20 to sorcerer TD, and no modi for spirit TD.

Giants have -5 modi to elemental TD, no modi for sorcerer, and +5 for spirit. Woopdie doo.

Dwarves have a better carrying capacity than giants.

Both races have a -5 to RE bonus, but giants ALSO have a -5 to DEX bonus. = Dodging isn't as good.

Giants look cool. The word Dwarf reminds me of Wee-man from Jackass. Damn.

Overall Dwarves seem better as a race for clerics to me.

On the topic of stat placement, as long as you place backwards GI-style (The method I used with Zentalin) and consider +10 bonuses for profession, as well as the modifiers that race makes to GIs, race doesn't matter in terms of when the stats will max and what not. Make sure your training plan is concrete, the difference of stats maxing 10-15 levels really has no substance considering it's probably what, 15/15, 20/20 TPs, TOPS, extra?

If I can get my other computer running again, I will post the stats/training plan for the giant cleric I have finally gotten around to rolling... using the 620 system his stats are all 100's at 115, and I still had enough TP's at one to single blunt, cm, armor, shield, mana share, and physical and 2x spells.
