crit vs. damage padded

I was jus wondering what the difference between damage padded and crit padded. And if one is better than the other.

If ya got redux, then get damage padding.

If ya don't got redux get crit padding.

I'm sure someone will explain why

Ima wizard so that shoots the redux in the arse. So what exactly is the difference?

When you get hit by a physical attack in a certain armor there is a crit threshold. In leather armor the crit threshold is 5 HP per crit rank. That means that every 5 HP dealt to you, you receive another crit rank in leather armor. Crit ranks add additional HP damage based on the crit chart I posted in this folder. When an item is damage padded, what happens is that if you get hit for 15 points of raw damage and your leather armor has a damage padding of +9, then the armor will reduce the amount of damage endured from 15 to 6. That lowers the crit rank from a rank 3 crit rank to a rank 1 because it lowered the amount of raw damage you have to endure. When the item is crit padded however what happens is that instead of the armors crit threshold being 5 HP per crit rank, it will become lets say... 7 HP per crit rank. So if a critter attacks you for 35 HP worth of raw damage, in normal leathers that would result in a rank 7 critical attack, but in crit padded armor it results only in a rank 5 which could save your life.

In my opinion crit padding is overall better for spell casters.

I would like to add that damage padding does not seem to reduce the severity of the critical.

In my experience its like this.

You get hit for 30 raw damage to the head. Your head goes splat.

You get hit in the head for 30 raw damage and your wearing damage padded chain. The damage thats added from the critical wound is lessened. Your head still goes splat.

You get hit in the head for 30 raw damage in heavy crit padded armor. The crit is reduced approximetly 2 crit ranks back down to rank 3. You take the damage and critical a rank 3 would would give. But your head stays intack for the most part.

The only reason I say this is because when I was wearing damage padded hauberk. I took the same "damage" I would have in full plate. But I got higher rank wounds.

Yep, Crit padding reduces the severity of the wound, Damage padding just reduces the HP loss.

Otherwise, as Kranar explained it, crit padded armor would be worthless next to damage padded armor, but that is not so.

In crit padded armor, if you get hit for a rank 7 head crit, it might bring it dwon to a rank 3, thus you live. In damage padded armor, that rank 7 head shot will still kill you, but you won't lose as much HP.

This is why damage padding is great for reduxed folks, and why crit padding is better for the caster types.

Thanks for the clearification!

Ok.. The way you are explaining this. It sounds to me like you are calling redux the same thing as crit padding. When I get hit, it seems like just damage padding not crit padding. Say for example I take off my full plate.. (I know it's stupid but there are alot of reasons I do this.. when dueling or hunting.).. and someone hits me. I get critted very easily. I take alot less damage than the end roll should have made.. But I still die, or get my leg chopped off. As far as I can see, the plate armor is the only thing that protects me from crits.
So.. wanna help me out and explain redux a lil more?
Thanks reg
Ok, Redux....

Redux is calculated after everything has gone through, and is a modification of that.

Non redux character get hits for 20 points of damage. Causing a rank 4 wound (purely for example of 5 damage/crit rank)

Redux character gets the exact same hit, but has 25% redux. He takes a rank 3 wound, and loses 15 HP.

Redux can almost be compared to crit AND damage padding combined together. The important thing to remember is that it is calculated after all the AS/DS/End roll numbers.

You can see now why damage padding is great for reduxed characters, When you get tons of Redux as your character gets older, you'll continually get nicked for 3/4/5 etc points of damage. This causes you to run out of blood very quickly. Damage padding will reduce this to 1 hp loss per hit (depending on how heavily the armor is padded) Thus making a happy reduxed character

This is alos why a lot of Warriors/Rogues (particularly Warriors) double or triple train in PT every level. Pulsing that 20 blood each time can be awesome
