Breakage info from Simucon

I spoke to Arcaeris last night on info about the implementation of breakage. He told me some pretty useful information he aquired at Simucon from Ophion on what some of the plans are.

For one... Ignore the current breakage numbers completely. All the numbers as they stand are subject to change, especially on armor and shields. Currently any weapon will break on armor greater than scale armor, and this is expected to change.

Another planned change is that the higher enchant an item is from it's natural enchant, the weaker it will become. So basically a 10x vultite shield has more of a chance to break than a 4x vultite shield, same will apply to swords and armors. I am guessing this rule may apply to crit/damage weighting/padding, but that was not specifically addressed.

The reason breakage will be implemented is because of the increasing wealth of players and the GMs inability to introduce powerful items. In the past when heavily crit padded brig was sold or other nicely padded/weighted items sold, they sold for a MUCH cheaper price and many of them weren't purchased for the purpose of selling them at an overly inflated price. Today if a merchant arrived with heavily padded brig for 350k, you can bet all your items that people from all over Elanthia would buy stacks and stacks of them. Without breakage those stacks of items could remain in the game permanently.

Hopefully breakage will provide a solution to this so that GMs can introduce better equipment into the game, and this way they don't have to worry about the equipment lasting for eternity.

One last thing to note is that items will NEVER break on the first clash, EVER. This isn't really a big deal however.

I can understand them not wanting things to stay around for ever, but what about the altered items people get done?

I personally can count the number of alters I have gotten from an alterer on two fingers.

I have been actively going to merchants for four or five years now. Maybe I am just unlucky, but I know several people who don't have a single alter they made, they just have to purchase them.

The part about higher enchanted items being weaker doesn't make sense either. They have removed the ability to enchant, they have said anything above 8x will be near impossible in the future, so what is going to replace these items?

I know lots of areas that if you have just 4x everything and aren't a caster or square, you can't survive, just to survive in Illoke my ranger needs heavy padded brig every spell a wizard can cast, and 8x gear. I still die 100% of the time if they swing at me while I am in offensive.

Basically I think that Simu is slitting their throats here. They are or have removed or restricted the possibilities in the game.

They have made it so you can't advance after a certain point, so exp, skills, power no longer matter. They are going to limit wealth because things are now going to break. They are making it so some of the more fun reasons to be a profession are gone. Clerics can't raise as often as they want, they have to wait even if they don't want exp from it. Wizards have enchanting neutered, and they are probably going to get two of the most fun spells in the game neutered, Cone and Meteor Swarm. Sorcs got slapped with spell aiming, and mana share, Dark Catalyst is worthless. The list goes on and on.

There comes a point when you say the game is broken, but we can't remove the "fun", just to fix the breaks.

I think they have removed lots of the fun just to fix it. You may ask why I still play if it isn't fun?

Well I have every profession. Slowly they have been cutting me down to playing just a few. My Rogue has no problems with hunting simply because ambush and hiding haven't been screwed with.

The changes make tons of RL sense. But in a Fantasy world characters should be able to do amazing things, things we can only read about in fairytales. Thats what the word Fantasy means right?

What can your character do right now that would be worth writing up in a novel.

I used to beable to say something about all my characters. Now I can't. I can about just a few.

So someone needs to tell me not when armor is going to get more realistic to wear, or that I need more mana share, they need to tell me when the magic, awe, and fantasy are coming back. Not breakage.

Thats called a roleplaying game.

That will change soon.

The beauty of the role playing game is not only having the heroes, but roleplaying the everyday schmucks as well.

Your characters can do amazing things, battle amazing monsters, throw down amazing spells from the heavens, raise the dead!, raise the dead! Thats fantasy. Just becaue every one of the 10,000 people who play gem can't beat the strongest, most horrible critter in all the lands doesnt make the game not fantasy.

And thats the point. When people get upset becuase one of their characters are stuck at 150, or stuck at 100, or die alot in pyros, or whatever. Maybe it should be like that. Why should everybody be the best?

Fantasy doesnt mean utopia. Even the gods lose sometimes. Even the good guys die.

Now that, buck, is entirely up to you. You as the player/roleplayer dictate exactly that.

You can not use game mechanics to replace creativety and imagination. YOU make the character memorable, you make him book worthy, not the skills youve trained in, not your spells, you.

So, as the game changes, so should you.

Personally I think that is totally backwards. If an item is magically enchanted by a wizard, it is being IMPROVED. Given new and special abilities. It should not only become better able to hit other things, but become stronger. Weakening a weapon because its been enchanted is totally the wrong way to go.

Also with breakage coming, whats the point in making enchanting so much harder? And making higher enchanted things break easier.

I still havent figured out how they reasoned a max of 50 on enchanted items. And getting there in 10 steps of 5 each.

I think maybe the new enchant spell should be made to work sort of like e-blade. Each wizard has his own special type of flare that could be added to the enchanted weapon, if the end d100 roll is high enough. Or Give protection from that same thing if its a shield or armor being enchanted. So if a wizard has fire as his 'internal power' when he enchants a weapon he has a small chance of adding fire flares to it. Or adding protection from fire to a shield or set of armor. The protection could be in percentages, from 10% to 75% or maybe even 100%. Getting only higher percentages by repeated, highly successful enchants by the same wizard. That could protect you from the flares other weapons might have, or from wizards bolt attacks like lightning and fire or ice(cold, water, the weather in Icemule!).

Anyhow I forgot what else I was going to say and need to leave. Maybe I will be back to post more stupid thoughts. reg

Of course its a role playing game. I personally am not here to get to level 999. To have godly weapons of death and destruction.

I just want to have a good time. Dying every trip out when you are just casually hunting doesn't cut it for me.

What you are saying is that there are skills and things you can do in this "world". But you have to decide what you want.

I agree. I am saying what I want is hard to get as it is. Just because 2000 people infront of me got it, doesn't mean they have to make it harder for people to get there.

That would be like telling everyone who isn't a homeowner that instead of lowering interest rates to allow you to build a home, we are going to raise them so that people who don't have a house can't get one, people who are living in a too expensive house suffer, and the people who were just right get to stay.

I think it really boild down to lots of jealousy. People see me play a wizard and once in a blue moon I cast cone and it kills 9 rotting corpses. Woowoo. People see me play my rogue and I kill something with one shot, and open -700 locks disarm -300 traps. Woowoo. They see me repel undead with one mana as a cleric. They see me add 105AS to every swing I take as a ranger. They see me raise the value of gems 40-60% and swing harder then any like leveled warrior as a bard. They see me implode creatures for 10 mana, everytime or melt away 100 damage a shot as a sorc. They see me heal every wound down lickty split, skin things for 1-4k everytime as a emapth.

I play every profession there is. Everyone of my characters is level 40+. I don't ever sit there and say one of my characters is more powerful then the other. Its just when someone compares their character versus another character of a different class.

Every class does and "must" have a weakness. They shouldn't moan and complain that another class can do their weakness better, because that class has their weaknesses as well.

I can tell you from someone who plays one of everything. Nothing has been leveled. Every class is weaker and less enjoyable to play from a mechanics point of view. Nothing will ever be leveled. Today is wizards can attack a billion things in a room for 18 mana. Tomorrow it will be that empaths don't have to swing a blade at all and thats wrong cause all the rest do, so they should be made to hunt otherwise they get fat.

Everyday someone is going to complain that (fill in class) is more powerful then (this class). This (spell) it more poweful then this (spell) or this blade swinger.

I am just wondering when everyone is going to stop saying So and So is richer then me, so and so is more "powerful" then me, so they must change the game so I can do it!

I am a little of everything. I have coins. About 200m worth. I have old powerful characters ranging from level 40-70. I have gone on quests and had fun. If I can do it so can anyone else, and if I can do it without saying Man that person is having a easy time, or man they need to make him less rich, or make him less powerful. Everyone else can too.

It boils down to complaining that you can't drive a BMW SUV because you work at McDonalds, and you want to government to make it so that guy has to atleast downgrade to a Ford SUV and you upgrade from a Gremlin to a Grand Prix.

Life isn't fair. Life isn't equal. You should be able to determine how much effort and time you put into becoming the best. Not your peers.

If you work at McDonalds and work hard you can go to college and get a degree in bio-tech. Then go make your 70k a year. But don't comaplain that because you are unwilling or can't devote all your time like that other person did and they got there sooner.

I worked damn hard for what I have. To have someone say that what I have is more or better then someone else so I have to give it up? Heh.

If you ask around there are people who played when other professions were more powerful, yet these people managed to become some of the most respected, most advanced in levels, and richest people in the game.

It was possible, it is possible. Why do I have to make it less possible for me because someone wants to be a Sorc instead of a Square?

Buck, don't take the easy way out. Thats the cheap excuse everybody uses.

How does accepting breakage make a person jealous? I think these changes are great, and I don't plan on making the rift, ever. I've played Gemstone for 5+ years , i havent amassed a fortune or exceeded a billion levels, but i did have fun.

And what enemies were you hunting ? In those novels you've read, the fantasy ones you say GS is not worthy of, what about those...

Did the good guys go up against huge monsters like it was nothing, never getting injured or dying?

Do you realize how many enemies you face just to get fried, let alone level? Thats worthy of a whole book right their.

Why should you be able to leisurely fight enemies your level (aka your peer, your equal in skill).

This isnt based on jealousy, this is based on game balance, on realism , on roleplaying. This is based on fixing problems that GS has had since its conception.

Maybe i am jealous. Im jealous of what this game could be. Of what it should be.

I can post several death shots I have taken as a level 82 ranger which shows me dying from Roaters, Troll Kings, Harbs, Sentinels, Illoke, Mastiffs, Red Thraks, Pyros, Lava Golems, Tsarks, Mages, Ogres, Boars, Vipers, hell even Kiramon can kill me.

I died 11 times in one day hunting different creatures with different strategies. I decayed three of those times.

Course thats if I don't use WoF. If I use WoF and have a complete wizard spell up I can live. If I don't have both I die, simple as that.

Buckwheet

PS. With all spells from a wizard and WoF, rangers are godly. Talking a 450 offensive DS with the ability to swing damn near 600 if I want, as a ambush. But everyone says take away spells! Total self cast environment!

Its still dangerous with all those spells, pyro shards, boil earth, Illoke Hand crush, boil earth, lava blobs, boil earth, 700 as with heavy weighted weapons boil earth. Oh yeah did I mention boild earth?
