This mage is giving forging a shot.

Well, I don't know how practical this is, but since I have no need or intention to hunt, I decided to pick up forging and "power forge".

I must say this is one of the most boring things I've done, infact it's what I'm doing typing up this post. I'm using Taernath's instructions on how to forge a hammer, which basically are the following:

Part I)
1) Buy an apron. An apron will run you only 2k.
2) Buy 6-8 bars of bronze at 500 silvers a piece.
3) Enter the workplace. This will automatically cost you 1k and will give you 1 hour access to the workshop and its tools.

Part II)
4) Put one of the bars of bronze in your left hand.
5) Stare at the glaes forging-hammer head-glyph. This takes 30 seconds.
6) Turn grinder. This takes 105 seconds.
7) Repeat steps 5 and 6 until you successfully have made a bronze hammer-head. This will take a hell of a long time and be very boring. If you fail your bronze bar will either reduce in size, or become a toothpick at which point you must use another bronze bar.
8) Repeat step 4-7 but instead of staring at the hammer-head, stare at the hammer-handle.

Part III)
9) Get out your hammer-handle and use the polisher to polish it. This is done by typing in LEAN POLISHER. Be very careful and wait 80-90 seconds before completing your polish.
10) Repeat step 9 for the hammer-head.
11) Last step is to put the hammer-head in your left hand, and hammer-handle in your right hand, and type in TURN VISE.
12) Repeat step 11 until you have successfully made a forging hammer.

I don't know how practical or how useful forging is, but I am rather interested in it since it's a "practice makes perfect" type skill.

The more I learn about forging, the more I'll post in here about the subject. Taernath also has some useful information to share about this system so I hope he'll also post what he can.

Just some other info for other wizards or sorcerers looking to do forging, the following are my stats:

Level: 109
Currently Stat Bonus
Constitution (CO): 69 .... 9
Dexterity (DE): 100 .... 25
Discipline (DI): 100 .... 25
Logic (LO): 100 .... 30
Intelligence (IN): 100 .... 30
Strength (ST): 79 .... 19
Reflexes (RE): 100 .... 25
Charisma (CH): 58 .... 4
Wisdom (WI): 77 .... 13
Aura (AU): 100 .... 25

With those stats it took me 2 and a half hours to make a crude bronze forging-hammer using the steps above. I was pretty efficient in making it.

Kranar,

Can you please tell me where some of the workshops are located?

Thanks.

Gandmor reg

The only workshop I know of is the blacksmith. You enter the gate of the blacksmith and walk all the way north.

Good luck, Kranar. This is going to take quite a while, I'd say a good week with 3-4 hours per day before you start making 'simple' hammers. Don't expect results right off the bat.

Just a note, if you fail at grinding the bar, but get the message along the lines of 'you realize you should probably re-scribe the hammer', you can use the bar again. It should show up as 'a ground bronze bar'. The only times you can't keep using the same bar, are when you fudge and get a toothpick, or the bar can no longer be scribed.

*edit*

Make sure to keep track of the number of 'ahas' you get. These are used as a measure of how far along you are. At approximately 200-250 aha's, you'll start making simple hammers, and plain ones at 300.

As you gain skill, it becomes harder to get ahas. For example, I have around 300 ahas in crafting. I get an aha usually 2/3 of the time I craft a hammer, as opposed to when I was just beginning I would gain one every time.

Oh plain hammers are at 300?! Woohoo!

I had no idea you had to count those until my friend asked me in an IM "how many Aha's have you gotten?"

I do have a question though. Should you wait until you master crafting to start forging, or is there a good time to start forging like at.. oh I don't know.. 300 ranks?

My halfling ranger is forging (no comments from the peanut gallery!) so I'd love to see her making swords and stuff soon.

Oh and does anyone have a list of hammers in order of appearance? Like from simple to plain, that sort of thing. reg

>>Should you wait until you master crafting to start forging, or is there a good time to start forging like at.. oh I don't know.. 300 ranks?<<

It's not necessary, but it's a good idea - with a better hammer you can create better weapons. At around 300 ranks of crafting you can start to play around with forging, but don't expect any miracles.

There's a list on the official boards.. I'll try to find it later on. reg

I noted on the Gemstone Website they mention that Drake and Feras weapons involved a mage controlling the elements during their forging.

If you don't get bored with the crafting bit before you get that far, I'd really be curious to know if it's possible for a wizard forger to make their own feras equipment. Was thinking a pile of feras daggers would be nice for my hurler.

- Belisar reg

Currently that would be impossibly since feras material to use for forging is nonexistant in GS. You can't even forge vultite yet since vultite doesn't exist, however that's not to say it won't exist in the future. Infact it's very probable that in the future there will be a wide selection of various magical and nonmagical materials to forge from, it's just a matter of when.

Two short clips from http://www.play.net/gs3/info/armory/enhancements.asp

Would seem all ya need is steel, knowledge of magic, and, I would assume, attunement to the element for the flare... Nothing about special metals. Since I can't hunt now, I'm gonna try and take up some time with it myself and see what I can find.

Drake Weapons - Most all are crafted of plain steel, which makes them so unusual. Each must undergo a process when the weapon is still but a lump of heated metal in a forge.
This process, which takes a bit of effort to do, is quite easy to explain. A mage is present when the weapon is crafted, and will constantly infuse elemental energy into the slowly-forming metal. This is much akin to the spell Elemental Blade, only it is a permanent infusing of the element, minus the bonus to the wielder's strikes. With careful precision, the weapon will retain the elemental fire the mage channels into it forever unless it is destroyed. Various intelligent creatures will often carry these weapons, as they require no special materials and a very basic knowledge of magic to forge them.

Feras Weapons - Named so after the mage who invented the process, Ulithian Feras, feras weapons can be extremely devastating when freshly made. They, like their drake counterparts, are mostly plain steel weapons imbued with a specific element, though feras contains the element of lightning, a very strong and unpredictable magical force.
The process involves several sessions with a mage who is knowledgeable in the ways of lightning, as a continous channeling would cause the weapon to break under the extreme energies.

Forging drake and feras weapons is -currently- impossible. reg
Ehm, I have a question. I saw Kriztian doing this forging stuff close to a year ago, and I thought I knew alot about it, but eh, what exactly is an aha?

An 'aha' is a measurement of your skill with crafting and forging. Occasionally after a successful attempt, you get the message 'Aha, you learned something that time.' If you keep track of how many of those messages you get (which are called ahas), you can tell how far along you are. reg
Ahhhhh, okay. I'm up to 29 of them

I know this topic has been dead for some time now, but does anyone have a list of the quality of hammers that you can make? My 9th train warrior just created a rough-bronze hammer-head after only 29 Aha's, and I was wondering how long it would take to create some of the better forging hammers in whole.

Also, does anyone know what two-handed weapon glyphs can be purchased, or can anyone point me in the right direction?

Forging has really peaked my interest. Although it's a little tedious and boring sometimes, I think if I can deal with the rogue's guild (::ducks: , I can certainly deal with forging. I see numerous benefits too.

You'll need about 200 ranks in crafting before you start making 'simple' hammers. Unfortunately I don't have the list in front of me, but past that it's approx. 50 ranks between hammers. So at 250 you get 'plain', and so on.

I think Wehnimer's has greatsword glyphs, but failing that, Icemule should.

(p.s. the 'rough' hammer head only means it hasn't been polished yet. When you put the head and the handle together is when you'll see what type of hammer it is.) reg
