Subject Forging FAQ (2021)
To save some time for new forgers, I made up a small list of Frequently Asked Questions. In most cases when someone asks the same thing that 2 other people have in the last 10 posts, you tell them to read the faq! (sometimes with other adjectives added) We haven't had a forging faq to point them to though...
Q: How do I join the Artisan's Guild?
A: You don't need to 'join' anything. The Artisans Guild is a term for a collection of skills that will let you create items from the raw materials. All you need to do is grab the tools and get started.
Q: Where's the forge then?!
A: There are forges in the Landing, Solhaven, Zul Logoth and Ta'Illistim at the moment. The Landing's is, oddly enough, near the Blacksmith. 2 north from Iron Jack.
Q: But I live in ____! When am I going to get a forge in my town?
A: Forging is still being introduced. As bugs get worked out, more forging locations can be opened.
Q: There's not enough forges!
A: I've never had to wait for a forge when doing it with my PC. Then again, I've rarely forged in Whenimer's Landing. You can try setting up shop in one of those other towns. To find the forge there, the best method may be to find a busy area, look around and find someone who looks experienced and ask them nicely (by name) if they could point you towards the forge. Saying thank you afterwards helps too.
Q: Me and my buddy want to work together. Can we do that?
A: Yes. Both of you need to be in a group together and the leader can get a forge for the both of you. While one person uses one machine, the other can use different ones. In the future, forges may work similar to the old table system where one could INVITE others who wished to join you. There is no due date given for this ability.
Q: Okay, okay. Enough about all that, I want to start forging. What now?
A: You need 2 things to start out with: A few bars of bronze or blocks of wood and an apron. Wood costs 300 a block, bronze is 500 each. Aprons are 500, must be worn to use the forge and take the place of armor. READ the notice, placard and sign at the forge before you start. Once it is your turn, GO WORKSHOP and pay you 1000 coins for an hour's rental.
Q: There's all kinds of things in here! What do I do?
A: First you need to make a hammer. Without a hammer you cannot forge blades.
Q: How do I do that?
A: LOOK ON the WORKBENCH. You will see a glaes forging-hammer handle-glyph and a glaes forging-hammer head-glyph. GAZE or STARE at the glyph you want to use with the bar or block in your left hand (GAZE HANDLE or GAZE HEAD). After you scribe the pattern like this you need to TURN GRINDER. If you are unsuccessful, you may need to start over with the glyphs or even get another bar. If you are successful you next LEAN POLISHER to polish your item. Once you have a completed hammer-handle and hammer-head, you can TURN VICE and attempt to join the pieces.
Q: I was polishing and when I put the piece away, I got the message "Oops, something went wrong! You'll have to start over again."
A: It's a known isssue. Wait until the polishing script is complete before putting away your part. The part you are working on is now ruined.
Q: I have a hammer now. How do I make my +50 veil iron incredibly crit weighted claidhmore of void flares?
A: Start small. You can master crafting and 2 weapon types. Everything done in the workshop is crafting. Everything done in the forging room is forging. A better hammer will help you forge, but learning in one does not affect learning in the other. You will need to buy a glyph pattern for the weapon-type you want to work on (edged, polearms, brawling, etc.) You should start with the first pattern listed on the sign for each type of weapon, since that's the easiest. Forging a hilt or most blunt weapons is just like making hammer parts. For a blade, you need to GAZE (your glyph type) and then forge it. Holding the hammer in your right hand and bar in your left, GET TONGS. It may take several repetitions. Once you've finished, GET BUCKET and fill the trough for the next time. After you've finished the blade, LEAN POLISHER to polish it and join the two parts at the vice.
Q: I went to get the tongs like you said, but they're not in the forge.
A: The tongs sometimes do go missing. ASSIST about it, tell the host what happened and ask to get the tongs back.
Q: I've got a bronze dagger, but I really want to make something better!
A: You can currently choose from bronze, iron from the kobold mines or invar (dwarven steel) in Zul Logoth. Steel requires that you use tempering oil instead of water, and magical metals need enchanted tempering oil. You can also use other glyphs you buy at that little shop outside the forges, but more advanced metals and glyphs are more difficult to work with. Magical metals are not available now, but will be in the future. Don't expect to see rolaren being sold off the side of a cart in unlimited quantities though.
Q: How do I know if I'm getting better?
A: Many people count 'ahas' to track their progress. You can also check what kind of items you are making. The order of quality is: flimsy, crude, simple, plain, nice, fine, elegant, superior, perfect, with some racially modified adjectives for elegant and above.
Q: I've been working on this for three days now, and I'm still making crude stuff. Is something wrong?
A: That's normal. You can't master forging overnight. It may well take several months, depending on how much time you spend at it. (There is a quality bug right now, but it won't be noticible for quite a while for new forgers)
Q: I don't want to wait that long. How about I just buy the superior hammer this guy is selling on the net and just use that?
A: Hammers are attuned to the maker and will gradually over time re-attune themselves to a new owner as you learn to use that hammer. Don't be surprised if it doesn't help you for a long while. You also will still need to learn the skills that only come through experience.
