Dueling.. Do's and Don'ts?

Well, since everyone is over here today (I can just imagine some of you saying, "What are all these women doing over here? Get 'em back in the Alterations, and Relationships Folders where they belong")!

Anyway, I've witnessed a couple of duels lately and had a few questions. It seems there are certain rules and etiquette for most things, picking, healing, hunting, etc. I was wondering if there were unwritten rules for dueling? I've witnessed two types of duels... one where the duelers are so different in ages the outcome can't be in question, and in the second, the duelers were exactly the same.

I don't have the exact details as to how it started, but a GM took someone's trainings and stats, and went around town boasting he was the biggest and the baddest. It ended up that the GM character challenged the person he had copied to a duel. I thought it was interesting, the offense and defense were exactly the same, so the duelers had to use strategy and other skills. I know I saw things during this duel that I wanted to remember to use when I'm hunting!

What is considered a good duel? I thought the duel where the two were exactly the same age was good. The other duel, where one person was so much older than the other, seemed really unfair and kind of a waste of time. I didn't understand the point.

Worst possible thing you can do on boulder, is involve another character, hide behind an older character, or suckup to an older character while there...

Dueling etiquette usually is to stun with self spells and in my opinion any duels a good duel as long as its not over in 20 seconds as hypocritical as it sounds comin from a sorc...

not to mention most of us dont apreciate others coming between fights, especially when in wars...

well jes a few of my ideas..

Basically if you say lets duel and dont specify any rules...you can go about it pretty much anyway you want, but some generally accepted rules are:
1)To stun
2)no imbeds except blue crystals
3)guild skills are allowed
4)1 round stuns and stuns by flares dont always count
5)no spells that will damage other people(unfocused maelstrom and implode, fire cloud, meteor swarm, ect.)
6)No outside help

There isn't really a definite set of rules accepted by everyone, but most duels i've seen of same lvl combatants follow this pretty well.

Good question Summers.

I agree duels over 20 seconds are always the greatest. I think the best duels I see are the ones where others cause pain. Sorcerers are the best obviously because they mainly have pain. I think guild skills are also great when allowed. To knock a person down or stun em gives the advantage to any good dueler. Also I like the hiders. When a person can sneak around and surprise his opponent it allows you to get an advantage on a blind sorce/wizzie. Also imbed are very bad in dueling. We all know that a blue crystal can help very much. But to be able to use your own natural strength from your training shows a good dueler. Catching your opponent off guard is one of the main objects in dueling even if it is stun or to death. Also what makes a good dueler, except your loss. Bigger characters are bad to bring back. I have dueled many people who shake my hand after the duel. And even sometimes want a second shot. Try it summerlyn...even in a role playing sense is the best. Walk around town and be in a bad mood and strut your stuff.

I've always understood that certain spells (besides mass-damage ones) were off-limits unless agreed upon, such as spikethorn. Is that true? reg
Back some years ago, an average day meant around 100 people online at any given moment during evening hours. Sometimes it just got plain boring hunting, or hanging out with the same people talking about the same things over and over again.

So one day, Bestatte and Charon thought it would be fun to duel. Back then the Dinghy was still the "safe" spot for dueling, before the twinks showed up and ruined it for everyone.

So we gathered a nice crowd, and I was given the right to the rules. Bes was a sorceress, I think Charon was a mage, but I could be wrong on that.

Here were the rules: no magic. None at all. No magic weapons, no magic metal shields, no spellups, no attack spells, no crystals or wands or nuttin else. Just a plain ole fist-fight.

Well this guy was a good dozen or two levels above me, so his strength stat was higher. I had one brawling rank (since I was still in Voln at the time and thought it would be a kick to voln-fu critters in the graveyard).

I actually got a 10-point damage to him before he knocked me unconscious. Was a proud day indeed, and everyone watching got a kick out of watching the two magic users duking it out for almost a full five minutes.

And don't forget to have fun! That's the whole point of dueling, to have fun! reg
Fist fights between magic casters are always classic duels!
