Same sex relationships.

Going to be a hot topic I know and Summer this is just for you.

But...the other day I saw two males roleplaying gay lovers. Now I don't have a problem with these people outside of the game at all.

I find them to be good friends. Something inside of me just felt as if back in midevil times they wouldn't have been so open about it.

I thought it was slightly out of genre or maybe out of character.

But lets keep this civil shall we? They are roleplaying marvels, but does it belong?

I have no postion either way. This is just a topic discussion.

Don't make me close threads!

Oh, sure, Buckwheet... start us off with a tough one! Not to mention, one that I have no personal knowledge of! Well, let me give this a shot, and see how it goes..

I think the majority of people want to have fun in Gemstone and do the things that they are comfortable with. The key is to be considerate of each other, and keep actions within the boundaries of good taste, and common sense.

As I'm wandering around town, trying to find the darn furniture store, I don't really enjoy seeing couples engaged in explicit actions, no matter what the gender match-up is. Gads, spend that 400 silvers and GET A ROOM!

I'm sure there is someone much more educated on the history of homosexuality than me, but I would guess it existed since the beginning of man. I really don't know how open people were about their choices in Medieval Times.

I have friends that roleplay gay lovers and they do a great job at it. It's part of their characters, and it's accepted just as easily as my being a ditz is a part of my character. The issue isn't jammed down anyone's throat, it just seems natural for them. I think what makes me a little sad, is that some of my friends worry that they won't be "accepted", or someone is going to be cruel to them. Being evil is kind of a fun part of Gemstone, being cruel to people isn't.

Actually...during the era of Shakespeare, it was common for married men to have male lovers. Women considered sex a duty rather than a privilege of marriage, and men found sex generally more pleasant among their own as a result.

The Sonnets were written for and about Shakespeare's male lover.

It isn't exactly the same era, but in general, the medieval and even Elizabethan European culture was far more tolerant and accepting of homosexual relations then our modern American counterparts are today. As such, this sort of relationship is absolutely positively 100% in genre. Not that I'd encourage all men and women to run out and grab a same-sex partner, but in this genre, it shouldn't be surprising or considered out of the norm when one does happen to encounter it.

Having said that, I think that many in-game public displays of affection, regardless of the gender of the couple, are inappropriate. You just plain didn't see people going nuts with squeezes and gropes and the like in populated areas.

Gemstone's world is like, as in close to but not at the same time close to medievil Europe.

Simutronics needs to determine if it will impact their bottom line. If enough people complain or leave about allowing same sex relationships around I am sure they will say they are not allowed.

Just think bottom line.

My pure guess would be it's not a big enough issue to worry about for them to take notice. If someone complains about it then I am sure they will just tell them to ignore them.

I get the feeling that more people would get upset by two gay men than two gay women in game, I have seen more than 1 lesbian couples. That whole double standard thing comes into play, that and the ignorant homophobia.

Have you ever heard of laughing death? It's a disease that causes the brain to rot and deteriorate until the person dies. Now that I think about it, it's not that funny. reg

I don't think it really matters. There is nothing wrong with it. Plus you have to figure there are probably some that aren't even really gay in RL. I know lots of people that play opposite sex characters and role play them as gay. It doesn't matter as long as they don't force their sexual preferance on others.

You don't even want to know the crazy stuff I have seen...

In my humble opinion
This shouldnt be an issue, i feel gms have a double standard with this and say swearing or something, they want to keep gs as a disney world place, but we see married couples having some fun in tc or sumtin, i really could care less, but the only real solution would be as said to jes get a room.

Kinda funny topic. Seeing that they just passed a law in Missouri banning gay marriages. Plus Simutronics is in St. Louis!

My first encounter with it was Annamari and Thabetha. Caught me off guard at first.....

I think that its "ok", but I am just curious if anyone can provide a historical perspective on it. I didn't make it a point to actually "learn" anything in my history classes. I was usually designing my next web server, playing GS while the teacher was talking or just not attending class.

Passed the class with a B, but it doesn't mean I was taught anything.

Anyway, from a purely historical perspective, would they have been that open about it? Would they try and keep it a secret like so many people do today? Would they have been more excepted? Is it allowed under certain religous factions in the lands and not others?

And since Desh brought up the "sex as a duty thing." I wouldn't mind if that was the mentality in GS, however I think that mentality can't be found, and if someone RPed it, well there would be lots of private room usage.

I can see it now.

Caels,"Come here bebe."

Caels,"Oh lets see, time to clean my house, Ursa you get...moping floors."

Caels,"Genny, you get...washing windows."

Caels,"Gritty, you get...sweeping the floors.

Caels,"And Bertha, well Bertha, you get the ultra special chore...you get to clean my pipes." (smoking kind of course. )

Buckwheet
No Cales were harmed in the making of this duty roster.

PS. Caels!!! Cheer up bud. I fergot to tie my shoe once and I would have wished someone would have made me write 5000 words instead of falling on my face and getting 10 stiches in my chin. reg

When this same subject came up on the Official boards, it was Andraste that did quite a bit of research and posted her findings. You might be able to dig it up still, over there, under the Topic of the Day folder.

Seems there is some evidence that same-sex relationships were quite open back in them days. reg

I've seen stuff about this on the Simu boards too. Thing is, ya can't get too hung up on what it was like back in Europe on earth cause Gemstone isn't earth. I dunno how open people were back then on earth. I've read stuff on the boards about how things have changed and a lot of things weren't as strict back then. But I don't think people were going around holding hands and kissing someone of the same sex out in public.

But they weren't out killing orcs or casting spells either. So I think ya have to look at it as part of the fantasy thing, not what really happened on earth. So looking at it like that, I don't really see it as being out of place or nothing. I don't really care as long as they aren't bugging other people, and so far I've only seen a couple people I thought were kinda disgusting about it. Bunch of others seem cool and fit in with the game okay.
