Is it all about the items and clothes?

Recently I was pondering this statement.

What makes a person well known? We all know its how they role play, but we also know that if someone can roleplay good, wear a matching outfit, and then whip out a weapon of doom or hilarity it really just adds to the scene.

I know that most of the great roleplayers atleast have some alters to go with their persona, so does that mean they are more real?

I mean, there is the pink rogue, the well dressed merchant, the "cackling" cleric, the notorious thief, but all these folks have more then just their "personna" they also have a nice outfit and atleast one nifty item.

So whats the consensus?

On a side note...lets see what all your characters look like. Names probably should be removed for the paranoid. But I am always curious to see the alterations and designs people have made.

I like those damn mushrooms heh

He appears to be in his 170's, has receding black hair, violet eyes, and lily white skin.
He has a tattooed symbol of Charl on his leg.
He has a black-and-blue left eye, and a black-and-blue right eye.
He is holding an ancient greatshield in his left hand.
He is wearing a gold ring, a crystal amulet, some black mages armor, a large enchanting bag, a silver mushroom shaped pin etched with the word "Godly", a sagging pair of black pants patched with a cloth mushroom on each knee, a blemished spidersilk pack, a ceramic mask shaped into the visage of a ki-lin proudly displaying it's horn with a long flowing silvery mane, and a golden medallion.

I hated the fact that Blades had 3 million alters, and it scrolled like 8 pages....

But i do think that alters make people stand out a bit, just a couple, but it weighs alot on how they RP...

You can use very regular stuff you find as great RP tools.... I took a bunch of that.."handful of magical dust" from ebon's gate that you throw in the fire to make it change colors...I RP'd with that stuff for about a year and a half hinting my character's use of it as a drug... GMs gave me a hard time over it, but I had a lot of loyal people requesting to get some etc..

I do think that the way that people deal with themselves at certain events, merchants, etc. distinguishes them from everyone else.

Sometimes clothes make a difference, but not all the time.

There's still several people that I love looking at just to see what they're wearing.

A lot of people have tons of different clothes. Several different outfits!

Shoshonna! Sheesh...

Ylena! Sheesh...

Those're two of the best dressed women I think in GS probably, heh.

Here is the new Caels... not much to him yet, but I hope to remedy that sometime soon.

He has old battle scars on his right hand, old battle scars on his left hand, and old battle scars on his left arm.
He is holding a reinforced shield in his left hand.
He is wearing a silver cat pendant, a butterfly charm, a crystal amulet, a jade inlaid silver armband, a silver chrysalis, some calf-high polished black boots, some deathstone earrings, an ankle sheath, a blue mail sheath, a jet black spidersilk cloak edged with silver silk trim, and some light leather.

You see Buckwheet's Main Character 1 the Half-Elf.
She appears to be in her 60's, has short, straight red hair, multihued eyes, and tanned skin.
She is in good shape.
She is wearing an ancient gleaming black warshield, a veniom-worked black silk gem pouch, some elegant black casting leathers, a rune-etched black leather belt, a silver edged black silk skirt, a rune-etched silver locket, a pair of silver edged slippers, a rune-etched dark vaalin armband, a black heart of glaes clasp, an ancient floor-length midnight black leather greatcloak stitched with shimmering elven runes, a glowing amulet, a pulsating blue diamond earring with silver veining along the faceted edges, and a glass amulet.

Buckwheet's Main Char Numero Uno shows you her shield.

Emblazoned on the front of the elven crafted shield is the bright green emblem of House Ardenai. The emblem itself appears to carved from a single glittering emerald imbedded in the shield's face. Closer inspection reveals delicate silver and gold elven runes of protection worked around the edges. You also notice a small enchanter's mark.

Buckwheet's Main Char Numero Uno shows you her locket.

Several odd geometrical runes score the surface of this small locket.

You see Buckwheet's Character #2 the Elf.
She appears to be in her 70's, has shoulder length, wavy light brown hair, green eyes, and tanned skin.
She has a black chain tattoo on her ankle.
She is in good shape.
She is wearing a gold ring, a woven rolaren weapons harness, some silvery etched elven armor, a crested silver-scaled lizard, a shadowy black alloy lockpick case, some veniom-worked boots, an intricately engraved vaalin band, a glowing amulet, a leather-edged silver mail skirt, a woven rolaren axe sheath, a small leaf shaped pin, an incised silver armband engraved with the insignia of Ta'Vaalor, a concealing elven infantry cloak reinforced with thick leather straps, a veniom-worked black silk gem pouch, and a veniom-bound rolaren tower shield.

She shows you her armor:

The classic styling of this armor shows the fine work of master elven armorers. The brilliantly polished breastplate is silver-chased around an intricately etched crest of the royal elven house of Ta'Vaalor. The polished black leather collar that rises just above the silver breastplate displays small vaalin bars that show the wearer's rank. The armor is well-padded with supple leather and lined with soft black silk for added comfort. You also notice a small enchanter's mark.

She shows you her band:
The band is of pure vaalin, dark and beautiful. Engraved into the surface of the band, are markings, which appear to signify military rank. A single, light blue dragonsbreath diamond is inset at the center of the band. Into the face of the diamond has been etched the royal crest of the Elven House Ta'Vaalor in incredible detail.

Maybe more to come! reg

Ah what the heck. Here is a third one for the night.

You see the Legendary Buckwheet #3 the Sylvankind Chirurgeon.
She appears to be in her 80's, has very long red hair, violet eyes, and tanned skin.
She has a pouncing kitten tattoo on her ankle.
She is in good shape.
She is wearing an eahnor elven infantry wall shield, a high-collared crimson silk cape, a vultite ankle bracelet, an ankle-length spidersilk skirt, a ruby-clasped crimson silk satchel, a glaes spider charm, some crimson high-heeled slippers, a furry spotted goat pin, an enameled faenor locket, a tiny crystal bell ring, and a crystal amulet.

reg

I figured, Why not? But I'ma only show you two of my show alters..

You see Lord Nindy Nindians the Half-Elf Empath.
He appears to be in his 140's, has short, wavy sandy blond hair, green eyes, and tanned skin.
He has a tattooed symbol of Phoen on his arm, and a tiny gecko tattoo on his neck.
He is in good shape.
He is wearing a black gold-bellied lizard, a glowing amulet, a long black linen cloak with a heavy gold sunburst clasp at the collar, an antique silver armband, a worn ale-stained satchel, a black spidersilk backpack, some neglected ale-stained leathers, a handsome black kilt, a veniom-worked first aid kit, a well-crafted black leather pouch and some polished black leather boots.

This once beautiful satchel has obviously seen better days. A blue clasp with a golden sunburst is all that remains intact. The rest of the satchel, now stained by ale and other assortments of alcohol, appears to have been used for sneaking various drinks past those who would not approve. Small tears and stray threads make it apparent that the owner was none too careful with his bottles and glasses. In the ale-stained satchel you see a bottle of Ole' Empath's Tonic, a piece of rum-flavored chocolate, an iron-banded haon barrel, a long dark cigar, a bottle of sweet red wine, a bottle of Ole' Empath's Tonic, a glass of rum spiked rolton milk, a snifter of aged cognac, a flagon of Dragon's Blood porter, a glass of blackberry brandy, a cup of a frothy green liquid, some punch-tainted scotch, a glass of rum punch, some raspberry liqueur and a glass of iced pale ale.

Once of the finest elven craft, these leathers have been worn by time, usage, and an abundance of ale. The rolaren that supports the loose leather is rusted and cracked but still somehow manages to hold the armor together. The left breast, upon which lies a small golden sunburst, has somehow remained untouched by the stains that are randomly scattered across the rest of the leather.

Flawless in craftsmanship, the black leather longcoat has been stitched with silver and veniom threaded sylvan runes throughout the material.

The armband has been diligently hand-painted with the image of a blonde-haired sylvan lass playing carefree in the ocean waves.

Edged in intricately embroidered silver scrollwork, the cloak's practical length and deep hood mark it as a Sylvan garment. Sigils comprised of sylphic signa knotted together like the roots of trees adorn the back, and a heart-shaped ruby clasp fastens it at the throat.

Catching onto that sylvan theme?

The flowing black silk thieves' shirt features tiny emerald lockpick buttons on the front and two larger diamond lockpicks set on each sleeve cuff.

Geosain shows you his boots:

Dark veniom thread is worked in subtle patterns over the sides of these sturdy boots, the images seem to shift elusively before your eyes, as though hiding their true meaning. They could be interwoven lockpick shapes, or runes, or simply an intricate abstract pattern.

You see Lady Aerienne Woodlake the Sylvankind.
She appears to be in her 70's, has shoulder length, curly golden blond hair, green eyes, and fair skin.
She has a tattoo of a delicate jewel-toned wild orchid with glistening petals and gold-accented emerald green leaves twining around her thigh, and a long blond ponytail.
She is in good shape.

She is wearing a charming jewelled flower circlet, a tiny diamond heart earring, a shimmering deep orchid ribbon, a shimmering crystal ball suspended from a delicate silver chain, a glowing amulet, a fluffy jewel-collared kitten charm, a shimmering gold silk cloak, a fitted elegant silver breastplate, an etched silver trinket case, a golden charm bracelet, a slender jewelled vine armlet, a magnificent set of white wings, an exquisite emerald silk bodice, a thin silver-link waistchain, a sleek skirt layered with emerald silk veils delicately edged in jewels, an emerald green thigh-sheath, an interwoven silver and gold anklet, some pearl-trimmed stockings, and some petite slippers with delicately jewelled heels.

Aerienne shows you an exquisite emerald silk bodice, which she is wearing. The fitted bodice is designed of delicate emerald green spidersilk. The heart-shaped neckline is edged with dainty jeweled flowers and miniature dragonsbreath emerald leaves. Slender strands of gleaming diamonds lace it tightly up the back. Inside, you see a sleek black emerald-hilted dagger, and a stone heart.

Aerienne shows you a charming jewelled flower circlet, which she is wearing. Slender vines of gold and silver with tiny leaves of dragonsbreath emeralds are gracefully entwined to form the base circle. Delicate jewelled sprays of miniature woodland flowers are interwoven into the vines to form an enchanting sylvan circlet. Dainty carved pearl sprigs of Imaera's lace are nestled amid pretty clusters of petite sapphire bluebells and fragile amethyst violets. The center crown is graced by a trio of perfect diamond linden blossoms.

Aerienne shows you a fitted elegant silver breastplate, which she is wearing. The workmanship of the finest elven armorers is apparent in this well-made breastplate. Supple black leather lines the breastplate for comfort while small straps tighten the breastplate into place. The brightly polished silver is embossed with an elegant gold-chased sylvan design. You also notice a small enchanter's mark.

Aerienne shows you a magnificent set of white wings, which she is wearing. Long, silky, white feathers with a silvery, iridescent sheen form the outer layer of these magnificent wings, while small, downy, white feathers provide a warming inner layer. The graceful wings are designed to fan out from the shoulder area with a gentle arch which allows them to stretch outward with a sweeping motion or to fold back tightly along the spine when not in use.

Myrael was kind enough to paint Aerienne's portrait a few years ago.

You see GameMaster Andraste Tir-Namban the Elf Demonmistress.

She appears to be remarkably youthful despite her advancing age. Kohl black hair cascades down to her ankles, offseting her milk-white complexion and eyes the hue of a summer sky at noon. Graceful pointed ears peek out from her silken tresses, adorned with gemstones that match her eyes, and a sardonic smile dances upon her full ruby lips. Perched on one shoulder is a nasty-looking raven. Suitably dressed for the rigors of her work, her attire goes largely unnoticed in the face of her stunning beauty.

That's something I've wondered about ever since I downloaded the Lost Ranger's art pak extractor. Is it the players or the artists who decide that nearly every last one of them is built like Arnold, Jackie Chan, Pamela Anderson or Lucy Lawless?

I've considered getting one off and on. If my elven magic user came back looking like the winner of the lightweight division of a bodybuilding contest with skin-tight robes to boot, I'd fall off my chair laughing. I for one, never understood the need for GM's for one to be in character in their description. There is already enough problems with them stepping up to the plate and acting like true human beings and treating others the same. I get the feeling Andraste and others would be more normal if their real first and last name were there and their real description. Just like anyone else in the real world has to do with a real company.

These personas contribute to the "godlike" image so many people complain about. It attracts the wrong sort of people to do the job in my opinion also.

I have heard it is part of their "training" to make some alterations. Sorry not choking that one down. Seems that same training could be applied or deleted when done. Same "training" could be used to dress yourself in a CS garb.

GM's bolt of thunder or even hosts entrances do disturb the roleplay atmosphere. There is no debate. Even they themselves say they being there is permission to talk ooc.

Anyone else see the obvious contradiction?

Also why can't player's after a certain point have some unique descriptions for their bodies? Obviously it can be done because the staff have done so.

Just typical from Simutronics.

I don't whine. But I'm sure you do. Taking my joke seriously demonstrated to me that you're way too uptight. This leads me to believe that you likely belong to that group of players on the official boards that bitch and moan about every little thing.

"People are saying AS and DS outloud and someone just hugged someone else on the Voln net, and I just heard a rumor that a halfling is talking about breakage numbers in the Thrak Inn! Won't somebody please stop the madness!?"

Maybe you don't belong to that group, and if not, allow me to apologise for grouping you with them. Though, I do stand by my statement that you are too uptight.

If you are in that group, realise that "times, they are a'changing" and there's nothing you or the GMs can do about it. People are going to do what is easy. It's the way of "kids today". Those that retain "old school" mentality regarding GemStone III are destined to be forced to pack it up and leave. Staying and being happy will require that you change (or at least are someone who can be happy alone) with the ebb and flow of society.

If I was a lesser man, I'd say that your type of posts make me consider stop being silly all around. But I'm not.

Instead, let me say this:

Klaive slams a banana cream pie into Bianca's face, sprays her (almost) clean with bottled seltzer and honks a bicycle horn three times before bouncing off into the night.

- The Klaive reg

The times they are a-changing? Not at all. The OOC and out of genre behavior is the same as it was when I first started playing several years ago. It's just that there's more people, and so more of the behavior. Because there are more of them doing it, it's more tolerated.

I was one of the ones who didn't understand the concept of RPing when I first started. Understandable, I'd never played a RPG before Gemstone. Not on or offline!

But I learned, and with very few exceptions, kept my character IN character and IN genre. As I got better, I became more aware of the disruptions. And the more aware of them I became, the more they bothered me. I think that's what happened to everyone who complains now.

The difference between some of them (not all) and some of the people like myself? We put our money where our mouths are and left for other games where roleplaying is the focus rather than a pleasant bonus to the Hack-n-Slash that Gemstone really is.

I came back to GS last month with Bestatte, to check out Ta'Illistim and Ta'Vaalor. I never made it to Ta'Vaalor, but I spent some wonderful hours in the first. Here's the thing though. In order to consider them "wonderful," I had to cast aside my standards for roleplay and overlook the zombie characters who "sleep" standing up and come out only to spell up their other accounts, never saying a word to anyone.

I have no energy left to quarrel with someone who does that. It's their game now, and anyone who tolerates it is allowing it, and consenting to it, and has no right to complain about it.

I didn't want to be someone like that - someone who allows it to be so prevelant. The staff allows it, they've made that clear. If the staff of the game says it's okay, then as far as I'm concerned, the game doesn't fit my standards of what I want in a pay-for-play roleplaying game. And so I left again.

I'll probably come back once Demonic Summoning and Ensorcellment are released, and possibly when Rhoska-Tor is released as well, because they interest me enough to warrant a return visit.

Other than that, I'll be satisfied to continue offering advice on RP and opinions of things I see posted here, based on my own understanding of things which may or may not coincide with anyone else's understanding.

You see Emislity Songish the Human.
She appears to be in her 70's, has very long golden blond hair, blue eyes, and lily white skin.
She is in good shape.
She is wearing a bejewelled gold crown, a ruby and onyx black widow hairpin, a pair of etched ruby earrings, a gleaming onyx nose ring, a ruby ladybug talisman, a crystal amulet, a glassy black mica amulet, a ruby red cloak, a silver dragon crested tower shield, a silver heart-shaped locket, a carved opal teardrop-shaped locket, a small rose, an opal-studded silver charm bracelet, a low-cut black silk and lace bodice, a platinum braided waistchain clasped with a sparkling diamond, a ruby red sack, a ruby red leather sheath, a short dark leather skirt, a ruby-linked rose gold anklet, and some ruby red high heeled slippers. reg

my little dude!!!!!

You see Lord Zarosa Comatoza the Halfling Disruptor.
He appears to be in his 40's, has thinning white hair, dark eyes, and dark skin.
He has some minor cuts and bruises on his right leg.
He is holding a gold-inlaid white vultite longsword in his right hand and a sand-hued vultite shield emblazoned with a shiny black scorpion in his left hand.
He is wearing a bead necklace, a white turbaned helm trimmed with gold leaf and shining rubies, a rune-etched amber stickpin, a black cotton backpack, a long twilight grey cloak, an ancient treasure sack, some brown leather sandals, some rolaren banded hunting leathers, and a crystal amulet. reg

Yay halfling sorcerers!

Here's my little warrior.

You see Fralcon Sor'de-Aragon the Elf Fighter.
He appears to be in his 40's, has long, braided silver hair, grey eyes, and fair skin.
He is in good shape.
He is holding an ancient rune etched elven claidhmore in his right hand.
He is wearing an onyx amulet, some white dreamstone-set brigandine, a gold ring, a shadowy black weapons harness emblazoned with a coiled crimson serpent, a sturdy elven crafted battle-pack, a dark mein band, some elven tracking boots, some sturdy falconer's gloves, a clear glass amulet, and an emerald green vultite shield.

>l claid
Careful examination indicates the etched elven claidhmore has a strength of 93 and a durability of 240. You determine the current state of the etched elven claidhmore to be at 100% integrity.
Etched into the hilt of this magnificent weapon is the image of a silver dragon. The dragon is perched on a rocky crag, its ruby eyes peering off into the distance. You also notice a small enchanter's mark.

>l shield
Careful examination indicates the green vultite shield has a strength of 60 and a durability of 195. You also determine the current state of the green vultite shield to be at 99.99% integrity.
Etched deeply into the surface of this vultite shield is the image of a large gorilla gently cradling the motionless form of a white-robed lass. You also notice a small enchanter's mark.

>l batt
Reinforced with kelyn bands, this sturdy pack was made for the battlefield. The pack is designed to be light, yet strong as to not hinder the nimble warrior in battle. Numerous weapon straps are carefully placed up and down its sides.

I am tryin to sell the shield, I know it's wierd, it's 6x though, so if anyone wants to buy it, contact me (shameless plug)

You want to give me that onyx amulet right?

I'll post Anticor if I ever get back into the game. I hate it when I have to go abroad for work and all of our networks block the port that allows for the connection

Anticor Rifling, Giantman Wizard reg

I dig the shield. Don't have the giant empath it would fit with or the silver to pay for it though, so your outa luck...

Well, there isn't a literal connection, Dude.
Walter, face it, there isn't any connection. It's your roll. reg

I'm glad you became a member just to share that with us. reg

Actually, she used to post quite a bit here, but she stopped. Not that I blame her, considering the abuse people were flinging her way. I'm hoping that people will be more mature, and she will come back.

I became a member because I thoroughly enjoy reading these boards and the majority of posts here.

My initial post was made solely in jest.

Perhaps your mind reading skills, with regard to another's motivation, are rather rusty. reg

I wasn't trying to be mean with that previous post. I was glad to see another person join these boards.

I like the 1000 different points of views that everyone brings, even if I don't always agree with them. reg
