Children in Gemstone

Well since they're having this discussion in the official boards, I figured I'll give it a stab here and see what the good folks of PC think about it.

Since the **possibility** of a change to how the ages will be used in the game (as in age related to levels, related to time in game, or not at all) one request was to allow us to choose our starting age when rolling up a character, including starting ages of 10 and above.

I don't know about anyone else, but I would be against letting people roleplay children. There isn't enough good roleplaying as a whole in the game to be able to trust people to roleplay children seriously and not immaturely. People play adults like imbeciles with baby talk and such. What's to stop them from doing it with their 10 year old?

Let's hear it. Feel alright playing a child, or roleplaying/hunting alongside a child? reg

An adult playing a child to me is fine. I prefer that to playing with 10 year olds.

Just so long as people remember 10 years old is not an infant....

Although I never understood how GS qualifies the aging process of elves and dwarves and such...Do they still live to 1000, or 400 or what? If that is the case, then 18 to an elf is really still in early childhood.

I think it helps those people who play their character as fairly young, and feel that at level 20 their character is too young to be a lord or a lady. I also think it will help with the family bonds that people make.

I see the "older" races maturing physically and emotionally around the same time as humans, however they enjoy adulthood longer is all.

As for people roleplaying children (puberty and below), that's all well and good provided that those people realize their mommies and daddies wouldn't allow them to go with the big boys and girls to battle the beasties.

10-year-old children might go on a "high hunt" organized by elders in England. But when the real enemy (not just some fox chased by hounds) is on the front lines, kids are sent with the women to a safe place where they can grow up big and strong.

Just something to keep in mind for anyone interested in roleplaying a child (as opposed to someone using their character's age as an excuse to behave like a brat).

I suppose it would be alright as long as it was done maturely.

I suppose it's my fear of the increasing requests for adoption on the net ("Anyone want to adopt a little wizzie? I need a mommy!") and having to deal with a huge influx of abandoned or runaway children. A larger slew of "unique" stories of how their parents died in a war of some such in their village and now they're alone.

Can you tell I'm getting a bit jaded with the roleplaying lately? reg

I really don't want them to do it based on how long you have been in Gemstone.

I have certain characters that I enjoy being younger, but they have been on my account since Pre-AOL days.

They would all of a sudden be 100+.

There could possible be a Young Warlord, or an old apprentice, age isn't really a factor to the strength of a character, although it is presently. But looking through history, some of the greatest warriors, were fairly young in age. reg
::ROFL:: Yep, and how many have you heard of who were 100+ year old human warriors?

::coughs::

Aerienne reg

Uhm....... Well you got a point. Athough biblically the years when into the hundreds. Realistically todays knowledge of people, a human warrior in his 100's wouldn't fly, or do much for that matter, and I'm not too sure that even warriors in there 50's or 60's would be any match to a warrior in his 20's or 30's (Realistically human). Now I'm getting confused. Bah............... reg
::grins::

When a warrior reaches 40+, the term for them tends to be "Armchair Warrior."

Or General...Take your pick

If people all of the sudden got to roleplay different would some of them act different? I mean with all the biting, bouncing and giggling, " Ohh me has an arm owwie pweese help me" crap that abounds would you really notice?

I try to act indiffent to someone if they are 20 or 100, sure I know the person who appears in their 100's is a higher level than me and can paste me but until they prove to be worthy of any respecting fitting an adult I will just continue to be polite. Same goes for that person who appears in the 20's, just because they are lvl 1 doesn't mean they lack common sense. If that person can enrich my roleplaying experiance great, I don't need to pick my friends based on the ethos of; What can I get from them, and how can they help me. If the person acts mature be it 100 or be it 20 then respect they get.

I think it is kind of neat having the prospect of living into my 100's and being powerful, after all this is not the real world. You could use the counter attack but in real life.... yeah but in real life if someone could cast a spell and take your missing head, or implode or boil then who cares what age they are they have the power.

I don't know, I kind of like the idea of being able to roleplay a child. Where it is true you have to worry about people who will abuse the situation (a reason to play a brat like someone else said) the same could be said for just about any of the other roleplaying possibilities currently available in Gemstone--like a while back when people were rolling up Empaths left and right just because they were easy to advance--and you had these monster Emps in like 5 months time--level 90+. People wanted to be Sorcerers because they felt they would be strong and powerful and able to kill critters/people easily..so that fad was big for a bit. Wizards for spells, Clerics to powerhunt with the meditate, see where I'm going with this? So where it could be an issue with the 10 years of age option, it's no different really than anything else when you think about it.

A thought--maybe they could put "limits" on those characters. Maybe some kind of curfew..like a 10 year old boy or girl can't go out of the gates past a certain time. Or they can only hunt in certain areas. They try to venture elsewhere at times they shouldn't, they get that "force holding them back" thing. That would be one way of filtering out the abusers I guess. Any other thoughts/ideas? reg

The only problem with the not being able to venture out of the gates idea is that sometimes one person can't kill that Hill Troll alone, but they can team up with someone a little older then them or someone like leveled and they can nickle and dime it to death.

I think it might limit the overall roleplay ability.

I think it would be about the same as limiting older characters from killing something much younger then them.

I can see the messages now.

Surely there are better things to do with your time.

att kob

Awe. Compensating for something?

hehe

Anyway..I think the best thing to do would be to make experience learned from a group based on the levels of people in your group. So if you have a level 100+ character in your group then you learn nothing. It allows people who are actually helping people to still do that, and it takes away from some of the slaving.

But then...does it really matter that someone is level 200 and your only 50 in the same time?

I don't know about some of you, but the hours it takes to get that high, I would get pretty bored watching the same thing go by all day and night long.
