Character Description change ideas!

As mentioned in the concerns folder, it seems people want the ability to have more of a variety of descriptions. So here's a few ideas to get things started.

Within the character manager:

Add different hues and shades of color for eyes, such as emerald instead of just plain green, onyx instead of just plain black...

Allow certain races to have hues that other races can't have. Such as crimson eyes for dark elves, amber for elves, cerulean for halflings, etc.

Turn "hair" into an object linked to the character via coding. So people can twist it into a topknot (and it would change the "hair" part of the character description when they do that until they change it another way), or pull it into a ponytail, or slick it back with oil, or braid it. Have the hair properties link also with the length the player picked in chargen, so a bald person couldn't do anything other than oil his scalp

You see Joe the dwarf.
He appears to be in his 70's, has a well-oiled bald scalp, yada yada yada.

You see Sue the elf.
She appears to be in her 50's, has long curly raven-hued hair pulled up into a ponytail, blahblahblah.

Have height, age, and weight affect the person's description.

stats: You are a female elf. You are 110 years old. You are 5'9, and weigh 192 pounds.

Description:

You see Sue, a fairly young female elf. She is of common height and appears robust and full-figured.

(get rid of the whole "appears to be in her 110's" crap)

Get rid of level = age garbage. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever for character A to suddenly appear 10 years older inside of a 2-week period while character B takes a month to age a single year.

Add to the character manager the ability to change height, weight, and beginning age, within reason. Allow players to start out portly and squat, or youthful or mature.

Let them change weight, at levels 20, 50, 75, and 100. Have characters who are particularly old lose an inch or two in height and change the description accordingly - that way, someone who is slender at 5'7" and 130 pounds, now becomes "average weight" at 5'5" and 130 pounds.

All of these things are considered "dynamic" coding and there already exists some variety of similar code within the game, so this is certainly "possible" from a coding perspective.

You really like Inferno too much lady. If something did get so obviously ported from that game to this, I'd hope it was the disguise skill. reg
I don't know what constitutes liking something "too much" means, or what it has to do with this topic.

In fact, the only thing from Inferno I included in my *several* suggestions was the thing about getting rid of age/level (which has been requested and suggested for YEARS in GS, long before I ever even heard of Inferno), and changing height/weight with stats, and offering race-specific physical traits, some of which already exist in Gemstone.

I think with the lack of responsibility *some* of the players have in GS, disguise would be a very bad thing to implement. If players played responsibly, and took the RP seriously, I agree it would be a great addition. But not the way the game is now.

I think the ability to gain a year every time you lvl is "kewl" and should not be changed, the game would not be as fun if the age/lvl system were to change.

I'd like to get rid of the current age/level system.

From my characters' point of view, either their friends live in a time warp or they do. Time flows differently for everyone since someone can age decades in the time it takes someone else to age a year.

I would like to see character aging to be independent of levels and time spent logged in the game. As far as I understand, currently an in-game year (not level-related) is the same as RL year. Perhaps that should be changed to 3 or 4 in-game years per RL year and tied to character age. This way characters will visibly age, but all at the same rate.

Naturally, some races will *look* older than others, but time will flow evenly for everyone.

I would like "appears to be in his 100s" removed from the description. While such an assessment may be possible from looking at a human, an elf in his 100s looks just like an elf in his 60s, 80s, etc. I'm not sure how to describe the age of an elf however, and would like to hear some suggestions for age descriptions for different races.

If "appears to be in his xxs" is removed from a character's description, there should be some way to tell that he or she is proficent in chosen profession or just starting out. The titles "Novice", "Apprentice", etc. are suitable for this. As an alternative, one could perhaps type "skill playername" and would get something like "Joe appears to be very proficient in his trade". Joe would see something like "Mike just tried to assess your skills." If Mike and Joe are of the same profession, the skill assessment would be more accurate and a bit more detailed, such as "Joe is a mage who concentrates on Major Elemental sphere and is very proficient in his trade".

Of course, there would be issues with people wishing to conceal their profession. Such issues would have to be resolved prior to implementing a skill assessment verb by having a flag that would turn off the detailed skill assessment.

P.S.

What is this disguise feature?

Roberta and Tinkerbell, you both have some wonderful suggestions.

I love the description changes. I think it would add a lot to the game to add more specifics to the character manager.

More specialized features are not exclusive to Inferno, so I don't know where you get your ideas from, Dead. People like having a unique character in looks as well as personality. Based off looks, there are 100s if not 1000s of blonde, green-eyed sylvans. There are less blonde, green-eyed sylvan rogues. And it would be great to be able to have more variation. Looks are not everything, but this is a simple change that would add a lot. I have lists of possible color combos that would look wonderful, depending on the character you were playing, all from muds I have worked on. Crystal blue, icy black, warm brown, all help to depict what type of person you are.

And Berta, hair you could play with would be wonderful! A hair salon would be even better. And sometime, specially after living in Ice Mule...A tan should fade, no?

Adding height and weight would be a very good thing. I think it helps us to visualize each character, more so than just "your standard elf." Tall and slender, or short and portly. Doesn't have to be a specific weight, but rather, a weight descriptive list you could choose from.

I would love it if the aging factor were removed, and descriptives like young or old were used. That would help to get rid of the stupidity of having elves and humans age at the same time. And only in GS are 100 year old humans something to fear...

And the skills assessment would be great Tinker. Dunno about you, but unless you are wearing the tools of the trade, how should I know you are a rogue?

All I need to say is I wish there were more people like you three working at simutronics. Gemstone III would be amazing. reg

I applied to be a GM, was turned down. I applied to be a Host, was turned down. I applied to be an AGM (prior to Hosts) and was turned down. I applied to be a Mentor, was turned down. I offered suggestions on the Official Boards and got trashed by some of the players and a couple of the GMs.

So while I'm flattered by your compliment, unfortunately I'm not the one who needs to hear it, and those who do need it, ain't listening.
