I understand your frustration. However, if it took 2+ hours to do 5 people, can you imagine what these people were originally asking the merchant to create?
Something I don't understand is why a merchant would come into the lands, and deliberately do botched alters.
Teregud did this at the Ale Fest. He did a ton of straight up nice alters for days, and then came in with his assistant, and allowed his assistant to make the banners on Wednesday night I believe. What's really sad is that I know several people who were trying hard to get something from him, because these banners were actually very cool, and had a ton of great RP purpose.
Some of the things his assistant made were:
(not exactly, but pretty danged close)
a banner of a fierce grey kitten
(supposed to be the Silvergate Lion)
A banner of a pointy-ear on a flying kitten
(militia of Ta'Vaalor banner)
A banner of an upside-down black tree
(Sylvanfair banner)
A banner of a blue ring
(Elven infantry banner)
Not all of the banners done that night were botches. 1 or 2 were apparently very beautifully done. From the people I talked to who got the bad ones, they were extremely disappointed. Cannot say I can blame them. Not to mention they had to pay for the banners (25k, plus the fee for the alteration if they accepted it.) When one of them RPed disappointment, all Teregud did was toss it into his backpack and say NEXT!
To me, a merchant like this is a slap in the face. Understandable that a merchant may want to do something different, but how disappointing for people who have been waiting for such a unique and wonderful opportunity, only to have it tossed back at them as something completely worthless. It may have been just a joke for the merchant and his assistant, but I personally think they owe the people they were working with that night an apology.

I especially like the one with the upside down tree. You could have a lot of fun flipping that thing around so people can see it.
So what if I'm spending 25k for it. I mean, I'm spending 25k for a freaking BANNER for crying out loud. That should tell you I have money to burn. I'd certainly be upset if it was a more valueable thing, a bejeweled pendant, or a 5x weapon or shield..
But it was just a banner, and I was gullible enough to shell out that kind of coin for a square of cloth, for crying out loud. No way am I gonna be upset if the merchant misses a few stitches or embroiders the wrong thing. Afterall it was my stupidity for paying that kinda money for a piece of fabric

From a player's standpoint tho, the item was a really good RP tool, and kudos to the creator for making something very fun and useful to many characters. If I'd had any use for one for my girls, I would have enjoyed playing around with it, as it was scripted to be waved around energetically, etc. reg
Draw me a "pointy-ear". Something that thousands of people will look at and say, "hey, that's a pointy-ear."
...
Right.
If you're going to take the time to do something, do it right. reg
