Sticky: ****EVERYONE READ****

One thing that is becoming evident here that always is a problem on any other boards.

HOW LONG YOU'VE BEEN HERE? I care a great amount :P

Longevity...let's throw it out the door please. It does absolutely nothing to change my mind. "I wish things were like this in '93..." "when i started in '92..."

You want people to respect you...then earn it through intelligence and honor. Not from how long you've been here or how long you say you've been here.

Hell the newest trend in Gemstone in the past year is to say you've been in Gemstone for 6-7 years. That's coming from some 18 year olds I know. Wow...you could type and play GS @ 11 years old! That's just amazing!

Really folks....thanks. reg

I agree. As soon as a poster says, 'I wish we were still in the ICE age, then there wouldn't be any snerts', or 'Yes, things have gone downhill ever since AOL was introduced' I just stop reading. To me, it's not worth reading a post that's set in a tone like that. reg
I completely agree with both of you. I've read old logs of the "good old days" Bleeds running around stunning and killing everyone that moved, people asking for rezzes in all caps, people scrolling asking where so-snd-so is. It doesn't look that good to me, just old. It's easier to have a sense of community when there's only 50 people in the game, ever, BUT that didn't guarantee good roleplay anymore than letting in a couple thousand players did. It's like Woodstock, the first one. Everyone remembers what a wonderful time it was, no one remembers it was three days of thirst and mud and heat strokes and OD's. If everyone was at Woodstock who SAID they were, they would have had to rent out a couple more states (literally).

He who laughs last, didn't get the joke. reg

My main point is this...

When certain people (who remain nameless) make comments that are 'bolstered' in their minds by the length of time they've spent in Gemstone, they are completely wrong. It only hurts your argument.

We know who the old one's are. They're the one's that post...and don't post how long they've been around.

Best message board posters of all time:

In my opinion of course.

1) Krakii (Robert actually saved every post he made on the Genie boards!...I got all of them on my old computer)

2) Dmitri vs. Dart (This quite possibly could've been the best experience for any wizards that wanted to learn. These two used to go @ it all the time on the AOL boards)

3) Dionket (Yes, Doug's a very effective writer and arguer)

Now do those people explain exactly how long they've been around? Or did they allude to the fact of how long they've been around? Um no. Do people respect all 3 of them? W/o a doubt. I know I do.
reg

Exactly. I did go off point there, but I don't need to be reminded of how long someone has been around to make me believe or disbelieve a statement. Thos who have earned my respect, don't need to tell me how long they've been in game.

I like reading posts about people who say they've been around that long. It's funny to see them get their facts wrong. A person once talked about their ora falchion they had altered back in `94.... Myself, I started sometime in late `95 or early `96 I think. I missed the ICE age, but not by much. I did take around a year off, and have only been back with a current concecutive stay of 2 years though.

As far as the good old days... I remeber a Lord stealing from me in the kobold hunting grounds, and generaly being mocked when I asked for help about it on the amulet. I remember less merchants... There was Thailor, he was always an interesting one, almost too bad a person like that would get banned real quick now days.

Oh well, I talked about how long I've been around, so that makes this post illegit I guess. Heh.

Asmodea Drey'Haus reg

This is probably a really stupid question, but what is the ICE Age? I know it was years ago, but why is it called that?

Summer

(I know, I know,... I really should read more of the history pages!) reg

Way back in ancient times...

An obscure game on a new mode of communication was created. The mode of communication was GEnie, an on-line service developed by General Electric. The game was GemStone, loosely fabricated from an older game called Shadow World, owned by Iron Crown Enterprises. It was related somewhat to the old RollMaster series, which is still available on various websites.

Iron Crown Enterprises worked in conjunction with Simutronics, a then-fledgling game startup, and eventually Simutronics was granted the rights to retain the name GemStone, with certain provisions. They left the relationship and re-created GemStoneIII, with many new systems and names of things and places, but keeping much of the old coding (a C-based code) while developing their own customized code (GSL).

That's a summary of ICE - Iron Crown Enterprises and their relationship with Simutronics. The ICE age refers to the time when ICE actually ran the game.

Great! Thanks, Roberta. I was thinking maybe everything was icy, like a giant Ice Mule.

Someone please tell me I'm not the only one that didn't know what ICE meant...

There are really only about 50 or so people who can really claim the actively played during the ICE days and can authoritatively speak about the whole range and scope of changes that have occured since.

Maybe, and this is a very scant maybe, maybe 1/4 of those players are still around and active to this day AND have remained active since that time.

Anyone else is lying to make themselves feel more important. And there will always be people around, like Jim/Celtar, to dispute them.

Well, Summerlyn... you are not the only one. I knew it was a time rather than the way the weather was in the game but I nae knew what ICE stood for.

People like Thal and Blades and Sagan made the game more interesting everytime I logged in.

Then of course you had those lil' gangs of assassins that were being brought up? (I think I remember correctly) Mainly remember Ravon and Rozak accepting bribes to kill people
reg

Rah! Thanks, Caels, for admitting that...the deadly silence was making me worry a bit!

Whew....

I didn't see much of Blades or the others myself, I only really ever saw Thailor. One of my earlyer prouder moments was when Thailor auctaly took a minute to find me and kill me for something I said to him on the amulet. If we had a few people like that now days it would make things more interesting. Although if there were a few, there'd be a hundred, and people who would use it just as an excuse to be able to kill others for no reason.

By the way, what year did the main AOL doors open? It was `95 wasn't it?

AOL-Beta ended, and the general AOL public responded to GS3 promo "buttons" on the main screen around March or April of 1996. AOL went unlimited in the fall of 1996.

According to the latest Disneyfication policy that is in effect:
It would be an abuse of Thalior's power because you were not a realistic threat to him - therefore Thalior should have been the bigger man, and allowed you to insult him at least 100 times, then have you punch/kick/slap him another 100 - and then *maybe* Thalior would be able to stun you ONCE without getting in trouble.

Makes you want to go get old now doesn't it?

Come to think of it, when I first started Gemstone I believe it was on Prodigy, then they switched from unlimited to per hour, so we switched services to AOL which was unlimited at the time. I first used the name Asmodea when someone in the Prodigy chat rooms had already taken the name Asmodai. I then later named a character Asmodea, and the theme was born. Man, this is starting to get nostalgic... Got someone who's lucky if he remembers last week, thinking back this far is really starting to give me a headache.

I say if yer gonna kill someone, do it the traditional way. Take them somewhere far from civilization and slice their throats or what not and bury them in a remote location. Some people might just wanna RP being psycho-killers and that type. (Edge, gather no ideas from this post *grins*) I think the GM's should back off on the PvP/CvC issue a tad. But maybe thatis just me... I was killed twice in a row by a titled rogue when I was but 6 trains, and all because I asked him to give my money back. I called no report and we resolved it IC, even though he still had my money... but hey that's life!

Thanks Andraste for the mention. I wasn't going to post to this topic, since I assume that in part its directed at me. But what the hell, I'll give it a shot.

The reason people, and I do say people in the general sense of the word will tend to quote background is that they are laying
the foundation for why you might consider their words worth taking note of.

This is inregards to any subject in the world folks. Whether it be gaming or vehicle design. This sets the background for you the reader, so that you know whether the person has a good foundational background on the subject at hand.

For some it might be for ego reasons, ie; self stroking. In my case it is not that by any means. I am just laying out the background so that you know where I am coming from and what I am basing a said view
on.

Yes I've been a table top roleplayer and player of tactical/strategic games since
March of 1978. Yes I couldn't wait to try out
Gemstone/Shadow World, Mechwarrior, The Hundred Years War and Dragonsgate on GEnie, nor Never Winters Night<Forgotten realms> on
AOL and any other game I could catch when I returned from Europe in Mid September of 1992.

Yes, I've played close to 90% of the table top games made between 1975 and 1996, whether they were small or large companies. Its my passion and hobby. Though I nolonger collect table top gaming stuff and actually before moving out to Denver, CO I gave all my gaming stuff but a few things to an old Army buddy. Gary was like a kid in a candy store he was so happy to get thousands of gaming books, hundreds of figures etc. My book shelf for my gaming gear was seven foot tall by nine foot long and stuffed to the brim with the stuff.

Yes, I love gaming. Its led me to meet a lot of fun and interesting people over the last twenty three years. I have some really great memories and I do not regret one bit of it. I've had a total blast designing campaigns for GURPS, Twilight 2000, Traveler,
Mechwarrior, BTECH, Runequest, AD@D, D@D, Rolemaster, MERPS, ShadowRun etc..etc..etc.

That said, since I find so often that many folks really appear to get bothered by even my mentioning in one short sentence my background in gaming, I'll try to not bring it up anymore.

As far as ICE age players go, we really are a ever dwindling group. It makes me a bit sad at times, because you form friendships that really do mean alot to you over the years.

You learn about the players families, their pains, loves etc. It is a comunity, and it does grow on you. I guestimate that theres probably no more than 30 to 50 ice agers left anymore. And of that probably 20 or so play with any regularity.

Anyhow I apolgize for listing background information off an on when I do a post. I shall honestly try to not do so in the future on any of the bbs.

Celtar/Jim, I really hope you DON'T change a thing about the way you post. For someone like me, that has NEVER explored the world of gaming, posts like yours offer a wealth of information. I learn something new almost every time I read these boards. I just wish I would have read them when I first started playing Gemstone, maybe I wouldn't have been so clueless most of the time!

Celtar, I don't think this post was directed at you.

From what I've read of your posts, you display a great understanding of Gemstone and it's history, and you don't adopt a 'high and mighty' stance with some of the newer players.

I think the problem generally lies in the attitude of some so-called ICE agers who continually spout off how it was better before X time when all the snerts arrived. That kind of posting has absolutely no redeeming qualities at all, and only serves to alienate the new players. Other times people proclaim they're from the ICE age as if being from that time makes their opinion matter more than anyone else's, which is not true. reg

Jim.. I too, hope that you don't stop your posting methods.

I'm starting to play another game now, and I notice the 'old timers' of that game doing the very same thing, start a post with how long they've 'been around'. It's for the very reasons you stated.

New players don't know 'old names'. And in the hurried up world of GS -- old character doesn't equate to old timer player.

As you said, there's so very few of the GEnie players left, I have my doubts that half the ones posting that, actually did play in the GEnie days. (Read their post and you can usually tell they didn't)

I agree with you on the point that you can tell old-timers from fakes. The one thing that definitely determines a lot is when you run names by people. In GS...there has always been famous people that everyone knew. Understanding of history, arkati, landscape, forging spots (heehee...couldn't think of another example) definitely shows a person's longevity.

Although I do respect you very much Celtar...it isn't needed for you to nearly _always_ mention the fact of how long you've been around. Everyone knows

I could be wrong on the date AOL went unlimited, but I thought I had about 6 months of blissful Beta-AOL GS3 before the doors opened. If it was closer to 3 or 4, that's a possibility -- I spent most of my time from December to February planning my wedding and could have been oblivious to the increase in players. But I definitely know I and other AOL-Betas spent more than 1-2 months enjoying the tales told by Kali, Zurion, Tselryk, Tedra, Shaynna, Solitaire, Kree, Jasper, Metaboculous, Bleeds, and many others, sitting in TSC.

The point of my post however was this, there are a lot of people claiming to be ICE, but they simply aren't. They aren't even AOL-Beta.

Speaking of which, if anyone is in contact with Zurion's player, I'd really love a way to contact him to say hello.
