Refering to GMs IG and calling them gods

Ok, My friend was recetly giving a warning for refering to a GM's name in game, Then he was shot down for refering to a GM as god,
My concern is, everyone refers tm Gm's as gods, God auctions, god weddings and sorts, If Gms make an appearence in game, why the hell can we reefer to them at all in game?
My friend got a warning, then had to read policy for simply saying "andraste" I'm sorry, but if a GM makes an appearence in game, and talks to us, we shouldn't be able to refer them whenever we please...
Would love some Gm feedback

Uhoh.

You just opened a can of worms on these boards Solkern.

Just wait for the posts

Hiway! Where are you on this one? reg

Got a warning for saying a GM's name in-game? Damn that's pathetic. I can see it now though on the net...

Snotrezzer: I hate you dude you suck
Boogerpicker: Private picking at my thrak table! ::bounce::
Reject: No way you suck!
Masterhealer: Need a fogger plz
Snotrezzer: You suck yo mama!
Reject: Shut up or I'll report you
Meanguy: Selling a mystery note 1 coin to 3 trillion. MB: 1k
Andraste: Ok fellas that's enough.
Imcool: WTB FGB TTM
Solkernsfriend: Andraste what are you doing on the net?

So your friend just was sitting around at a table or the park or the boulder. Doing their usual thing. Said "andraste", then kept doing whatever, and got warned? Hmm... reg

Something tells me that there has to be more, way more, to this.

I've mentioned GM names in-game. There's times when you just have to, like House Officers talking about what they've sent to the GS Housing GM.

Naw, I think what's being left out is what was said and in what context. But it makes for good anti-GM fodder for these boards. reg

Actually, there wasn't really much more, We just got off the boulder, and I i rememebr right we were sitting at the tables, and he was Telling me, how he thinks the Gods are aganist him, He then mentions he thinks andraste and others are on his back, he got an offical warning, pulled up, and was forced to read policy... reg

Well now. That's a wee bit more than..

Ya know, I've been banned before. Told to take a hike, we don't need you here. All I did was attack someone, cause they were pissing me off.

Okay, so they were pissing me off for being all fluffy-happy when I'd just lost everything I owned, and I decided to kill them and 11 other people next to them. But the first one sounds better! reg

i dont know about you guys, but i think that Andraste is always on PMS. i want the old gods back, they where cool as hell reg
Actualyl all he DID was say is andraste
I wish i still had the damn log He was like, "I think alot of gods are on my back"
And i said somethign to the effect of
"like who?"
and He said "andraste"
And then i was like "why would you think that"
He goes "i just think alot of gods are on my back"
then poof, hes gone

Told me before he could tell me he got warned for syaing andraste, he was pulled up
and forced to read policy, so in effect, he only did say andraste reg

Heh.

Siara...gimme a freakin' break.

That just lets me know that Andraste is way too angry at something at life.

There has to be way better things than warning someone for saying your GM's name in-game.

That's just rediculous in my opinion.

Find something better to do with your time Andraste...you've already shown us all the duties you have...

Sitting around the boulder warning people for saying your name...uhm...hmm...

Someone pick up where I left off.

reg

Weird.

Even with the larger explanation about how he was griping about the Gods being on his back, that's not a reason to pull someone up from a table...Is it?

At least he didn't say "Those bastards at Simutronics can eat my dried foot fungus" right?

I mean, then I could understand the whole "Simutronics" thing.

I've been beaten about the ears for simply posting "mentors"..before though. hmm

reg

Oh, this is cute also, friend said "kaor eat my cookies" and look what happens, this is a funny log

Alfy for GM! reg

He insulted the most powerful known creature in Gemstone. Can't say it's unprompted. reg
I mean come on, you get killed in a relatively IC manner. I wish the GMs would do stuff like that to me now and then, at least it'd look like they know I'm alive heh. It's really bad taste to start bitching about feedback and reporting and stuff like that. I dunno maybe I'm just an insensitive jerkoff... well actually I know I am, but I don't think there really is any need to get all up at arms over something that stupid.

Sonic reg

GMs by their very nature are OOC entities. They are customer service representatives and coders.

Have you ever seen the wonderful GM Tigermist's attire? She is wearing "a pouch that is so 'in' you could just die". That would NEVER be allowed for a player.

It's for the amusement of the people that look at her, and perhaps herself as well. It's an OOC joke. Not to be taken for a character's reaction.

If you choose to say the name of a GM outloud, you may as well be talking about football scores and computer hardware, because GMs are just as OOC.

Furthermore, GMs are not gods. We have a working pantheon in Elanthia and we GMs are not it. In fact, GMs are nothing.

GMs don't auction a damn thing. Merchants do. GMs don't give you alterations. Merchants do.

When you get a SEND. Your character doesn't know there was a SEND. You, the player, are being told something by us.

And as for saying "God Auctioned"... when's the last time you saw Sheru come down and sell spooky halloween masks? Has Eonak risen from the earth and presented his newest sanctified wares for your inspection?

No?

Then it's not god auctioned.

Zanagan/Zarosa reg

I don't care who the GM is. I think everyone already know's my opinion on this.

Gamemasters... The term really doesn't apply in Gemstone. It is so perverted from the original meaning in Dungeons and Dragons.

Gamemasters were people who actually created real time a storyline and made it fun to be in a game.

When was the last time anyone really had that sort of input from a GM in gemstone?

The first problem Simutronic's made was trying to make a GM a jack of all trades.

GM's in my opinion, this isn't new, should not appear to be in their 400's or such. They should not wear descriptions or clothing that can not be made by a regular paying customer.

They should not 'disrupt' the roleplay atmosphere by their entrance or departure.

They should look and act like real customer support personnel who care about people. They should go that extra mile to get past the anonymous feel of the virtual world of the internet.

They should not assume. They should take that extra step to make sure they understand what a person is trying to communicate.

They should understand the medium of the internet is a hard place to convey real feelings. They should understand it is easy to misinterpret other real people.

They should treat others the same way they would want to be treated.

I could go on and on.

Every rule in the customer support world Simutronic's has so shattered I think they could run for the anti service poster child.

There are many exceptions, but the majority of my encounters with staff have been confrontational and disheartening.

I am under firm belief that many GM's in this game do not gravitate to the job for the right reasons. The motivation is not of pure intent and that has been demonstrated time and time again.

I think it would take a major cleaning and perhaps a new ownership of the game for any real changes to take place.

Hiway
reg

Just noticed Klaive's player spouting some garbage.

I am pretty sure impersonating staff is a violation of the TOS and a bannable offense.

Let's see if the folks at Simutronics actually show some consistency about dealing out bannings for things that happen outside of the game.

I seriously doubt they will do a thing. Partly due to my making a point out of it right here. Just to be stubborn they will ignore it.

Ah the children....

Hiway reg

My original idea, posted who the heck knows how long ago, is borrowed from inferno and a couple of other games I've played online:

Create an OOC area, apart from the in-game world. Let ALL accounts log into that area, and have to go through an arch, or a gate, or whatever to get into the actual game. This will plunk them down wherever they left last.

In the meantime, the OOC area would consist of a few text-based chatrooms with atmosphere, the consultation lounges, the GM areas, all the dev stuff (inaccessable by anyone other than staff of course), a forum room for OOC forums, and a few meeting rooms.

The meeting rooms would be where players get their assists answered and reports addressed.

If you assist, and it's "your turn" to be seen by a host or GM, you'd get a [send] and you'd quietly excuse yourself from whoever you're with, go to an unpopulated room, and type QUIT. You'd end up in the hallway in the OOC area and go through whichever door the [send] said.

This way, the staff would *never* be seen in the RP atmosphere as staff, but would still be able to show up as nifty characters for the purpose of running events and plotlines. They just wouldn't ever be seen AS staff *in the game.*

Players would have the chance to speak one-on-one without being interrupted by anyone, without any disruption of roleplay.

I don't know why it was never implemented even after it was suggested several times by myself and others. It seems a logical solution.

R
reg

I'm with ~R~ on this one, but if they can't even code the 'who full' list into alphabetical, without changing the entire codebase of the game for all eternity...

I think it would be too much work to implement something that big, even if it would rock, and change the world back into a roleplaying environment, one step at a time..

But of course, there's more important things first... we have breakage to worry about, and GP 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, etc... I'm waiting for 'old age' to be implimented, when you're in your 100s, roundtimes for walking, you might randomly walk in the wrong direction, you can only eat soft food, your bones snap at random if you bounce around, you need diapers, and when you try to talk, all you do is say stuff like 'dagnabbit!' and 'rone wehnimer was a good lad, his kind is only seen once in a generation' reg

I didn't read all the thread. But wanted to post before it did!

I wish they would lightning you and others things when you do something wrong. Knida fun and more of a RP way of dealing with snerts. I know I got hit with lightning. Then kept talking crap. Then a swarm of monsters came in and killed everyone. That was a blast.

I'm not staff, but this would create a slightly larger problem than you make it out to be. Sorting is a huge overhead.

Your best sorts run in O(N*log2 N) time. Assuming 1024 players are on, in a worst-case scenario, will take 10240 algorithms to get them into order.

Even a sorted linked list would take some processor time. Every time someone logged in or out, the add or remove function would have to run in O(N) time. However, displaying would also run in O(N) time.

I could go into more depth and debate if a sorted or unstorted list or a tree should be used, and how it should be implemented, but right now, it's bed time. reg

Well ...

Back to the original idea of this topic, what is the right answer? If its inappropriate to refer to GMs as 'gods' (which it clearly is in going with the Arkati history of the game), then how can we, as the good players we are, change this? I know I've said it and now that I've read this, I'm going to make a conscious effort not to.

As far as calling them by name... I don't see how that can be avoided. There are too many scenarios in which they interact in the game. They have names. Use them.

*drops one coin in the overflowing bucket*

Sorry that it was just one coin.. don't have change for a 20

What scenarios would you need to call them by name?

If I see Andraste on the landing net doing one of her typical "Settle down everyone, lets make merry in the Landing"

I don't make a response to it, because its not meant to be responded to. Its intended for the player behind the character. Of course there are the dozens of morons who reply back to her and think they are funny etc etc

Ok, so what about Tigermist...
Can I talk to her or should I ignore her too during premium events? I don't see you! You're not there!

Easy solution.

Don't use a GM name in game anymore and you won't get a warning for that. --Other things...Well, I think you've got your hands full there.

Its not so much a fact of overhead, but more from what I've heard, GS3 's codebase don't support arrays (could be mistaken). Hence, the lack of features. Theres someone else who posts here who could clarify this since he's the programmer, I'm just the silly UNIX sys admin.

You can implement a linked list without pointers, which I doubt the GS Script has, it's just kludgy.

Even if GS Script doesn't have arrays, c does. I'd assume WHO is already implemented in c, sipmly because it's so old a command.

As for the overhead, it's more than it was before. An unsorted WHO FULL has worked for 10+ years, why change now? reg

If the GM's don't even want to be recognized in the game why would they come across as character's them selves or even have names?

Eh, personally, if see a GM or Host in game I look at them once(for curiousities sake), then leave. Nothing they have to say really interests me anyways. Now if a GM or Host had business with you, why not simply send (or whisper even) to them that staying inside the roleplaying context of the game you would rather speak with them in a consultation lounge. Once there call 'em whatever the hell you want.

P.S. If they refuse to that then they are just a power-tripping jerk-ass and I'd begin to refer to them as such. Maybe that only makes sense to me though... reg

The excuse I get is that is practice for them to alter as a merchant etc. Hmm. Seems they could keep practicing once they got it done and delete it. I don't buy it for one bit.

I don't like that GM's or hosts actively disrupt the roleplay atmosphere with their grand lightning bolt entrances or such.

You are asking an age old question and the answer is the only one I have heard is the weak one I received as stated before.

Identify with customers not characters. Be people first not gods.
