Emoticons

I was sitting in the crypt today, healing with my little empath during the invasion, when I saw something that really irks me. It's not the first time this has happened:

Xxxxx says, "much better now :)

You see Lord XXXXX XXXXX the Dark Elf.
He appears to be in his 70's, has blah blah blah...

::grumbles::

Come on people! What's the point of having verbs in Gemstone if we aren't going to f-ing use them? ::screams::

Is it so hard to do?
'much better now
smile

But no, no... we get stuck with all sorts of ;) :) :( :P and god-knows-what. Does this bother anyone else?

((Edited to disable "smilies"... can't get away from the things))

I feel that emoticons in GemStone III only serve to add to the role-playing environment. There's nothing quite as believable as an angry Sorcerer who does this:

Deathguy says, "I shall harm you now. >:("

It is much better than him using verbs, because people understand the inflection in his voice better. :)

Klaive... I really wonder why you post here sometimes. I've yet to really see something that you've posted that wasn't done with the sole purpose of mocking of poking fun at someone.

::shakes head::

And BTW Klaive... here's a hug and kiss from Pyrates. He misses you and your "cronies."

Well what kind of responses did you expect? he didnt role play... you didnt like it... i dont see that much to discuss no offense..
moken reg
Hmm... do you need someone to help you pee, too?

I dislike the fact that to have a dicussion in these boards, you've gotta drag people by the hand and tell them what to talk about.

::shrugs::

No one has any information about what the GMs have to say about it? I see them (emoticons) as being just as OOC/OOG as anything else that goes on these days, but it seems to go on and on. Am I the only one seeing people do this? Or am I the only one who cares?

And Moken, my response to Klaive has nothing in specific to do with this post, it was just shining example of his "presence" on these boards. You can see it anywhere, and you damn well know it. Or you should, anyway. So... no offense taken. : :pokes::

((Smilies, I swear... ::raises fist::))

Emoticons are 'officially' bad. Whisper to the person and ask them to stop, or report. reg
I remember my first trip to teras... some dark elven empath <wonder if it was the same> was at the north gate using emoticons, so i whispered to him to stop, his reply? <spoken out loud no less>

'Naah, i've always spoken like this, Urgoyle :), and i will continue to, and i don't plan on stopping :D'

It's people like this who spawned tai-kwon-leap, and voln-fu...

-Urgoyle........boot to the head reg

Anyone using emoticons in gs, in anything other than whispers, deserves to be dropped with a boot to the skull. Not much else I can say on the subject.

I got no dukes. reg

Wooohoo! Replies. ::grins::

I think the main problem is that the people who use them fall into the same category of people who take great offense when you whisper to them about something, then do it again just to spite you and be "cute."

I think I lost count on the general maturity level of the average internet game person.

I stopped at 10,000 from the number of immature little vindictive brats who can't see what is right or wrong. You do the right thing and let someone know what is bothering you nicely and they will most always get mad and belittle you for it.

I now know why the typical gemstoner runs behind your back to the GM's first.

These same players become GM's. The cycle is hard to break unless someone with enough supervision can establish a policy that doesn't reward this sort of behavior and actively discourages snertisms.

Hiway reg

This is suppose to be a role playing game where you picture everything in your mind. Basically those things are irrelevant because the text shows you nothing. It does not say a word. It shows no meaning what so ever. I view it as mispelled words maybe. But people who get upset with it need to rethink the thought of it and people who do it need to rethink why they do it?

Lord Deprav
I still think they should be smacked. reg

People who use emoticons as part of their ingame speech should be dragged to the nearest anthill, staked out on the ground and drenched in honey until they promise to stop.

I've done them in whispers or private thoughts to people when the topic isn't in character or I'm not certain that the other person understands that it's meant in a lighthearted tone, and is not something that should be said aloud in game.

Dunno if that qualifies me for an anthill in your opinion, but I try to keep that to a minimum :P

Aerienne reg

Emoticons in GS are the mark of a moron, nothing more, nothing less.

Sonic reg

Yes, i can't stand when this is done either. I might slip and do it once in awhile in whispers. but i try and grin, smile and such in game to make people wonder why he is grinning at the person, what did he whisper or such. adds another layer of depth to the game.

hey.. half the staff uses emoticons...

Gotta start with the mooks who set the example...

Nothing's dumber than someone who says 'LOL' when they could just laugh, eh.... reg

I've only seen staff do it in Announcements or SENDs. It's justified there by my account.

I'm gonna go with beef man here... the 'LOL' 'BRB' 'TTM' and the occasional 'AFK' fools are almost as much of, if not more of a downfall, then the emoticon crowd reg

I hate all of that, the emoticons, the BRB, AFK, LOL, etc.... and let's not even talk about how long it took me to figure out what the heck "OMW" was!

Summer reg

Ive never seen some one use Emoticons in GS before.

TTM and OMW don't bother me. I look at most of the stuff I see on the amunet as being somewhat like the classifieds. You want to say as much as possible with as few words as possible.

TTM is not chatroom speak. You can think to me all you want in a chat room. I'm not psychic....And OMW or On My Way, is the quickie response when you are setting up a meeting, like picking up a purchase. I don't use it, but it doesn't bother me either. It's not high quality roleplaying, but it's not speaking an action which you could simply do, such as LOL.

Aerienne reg

Amen Fralcon.

And TTM is considered chatroom-eese because its an abbreviation meant to be 'easier on the hands'...Not because it can or cannot be used in a chat room.

I never have an amulet on, and the first time I saw "OMW" was on the Voln Net. Someone had died and someone else said "OMW!". I was sitting in the Tower thinking to myself... "Oh, My Word!", "Off My Weapon!" on and on and on. I never claimed to be the sharpest pencil in the box, and finally someone told me it was "On My Way"... duh!
