My gemstone concern

I'm concerned because i can't play the game from work, ARGH!!!!!!!

I get this cable speed net connection, i get all the time I want to fiddle around with the bloody thing. I get everything I want, download this, see that, etc. etc. (no porn, mind you, the place is run by clergy... But i don't porn anyway)

But i can't install aim! I can't install mirc! I can't do anything! I can't even use java or the escape, ARGH!...

Question... How on earth can you make a super doom firewall less powerful, so ya kin at least talk to yer buds, without having to leave posts and such?

Well, I can't solve all your problems, but there is one I can help with, because I face the same problems at work with a firewall.

AIM QUICKBUDDY. Go to the AIM website. There are 2 that are no-download programs. I have to use the old quickbuddy to use AIM but it does load your buddylist and all and allows you to at least chat with your friends, hehe.

Hope it helps!

Sounds like a firewall issue, I noticed that AIM and several other progams that require a direct connect/virtual connection go thru the same port. Most IT personal I.E. me will disable or block that port. If you are running a proxy server you can define the port that you are using to go to the internet, try several ports you might get lucky one could be open and work. try like port 8000. That used to work here till my superiors shut it off as well. To do this on IE go to tools/internet options/Connections Tab/ Lan Settings button, and define it there. If that doesn't work then well, I tried.

Naah, i can download stuff fine... This, being a christian place, is laughable sometimes... If i sent the browser to www.sluts.com or something, the whole system would come crashing down (because of me, yay!) due to the cyberpatrol thing they got going.

Heh... then everyone would prolly' get pissed too, and i'd get fired, but... well... Oh, back to the story... I can download anything i want, aim, sge, whatever... I just can't INSTALL the stupid things to go and play. reg

Yep, but the beauty of the quickbuddy is that there is no install It's just like having another internet window open.

If you could download but not install sounds like a permission issue. See if you can get buddy buddy with one of your Network Administrators and have him give your profile install rights. Most users don't have those rights and I will be damned if any of my "special" users will install stuff on my network. They don't call us Network Nazis for nothing.

Well one thing is to install on the network/server, another is to be able to install on your computer's hard drive. You can't do that either?

I know we have a pretty serious firewall here at my job too since I can't play here but I can use AIM and install programs on my hard drive.

Ask the network administrator about installing programs on your own computer and see what he says. reg

Do you have your own network drive?
An easy trick is to find a win 98 machine hooked up to the network, and install everything that way.

If you can't run escape it might just be they disabled java and/or set internet security really high.

Hey, thanks for pointing this one out to me, I was able to bitch at the few people i knew who were online, and lament about my current state for 20 minutes or so..

Helps the pain, heh! :> reg

Heh, you guys are crazy also... Shooting out ideas to get around the system and shirk duties... Seriously though, just the aim quickbuddy thing was enough.

About all i have the time to do online is check my e-mail, bark a greeting to a couple of my friends, and then it's back to the gulag.... Who was talking about network nazis again?

Yeah Urgoyle, I have the same problem at work, it's due to it being a Win NT machine, and work controls almost everything, including much of the settings, Thanks for the info on Quickbuddy, that should work. I can't even access game sites, due to a block, and their so smart, they're even block sites like silentsurf and etc. Ah, what has work come to, can't even play GS at work, Bah!!!!!! Can't a guy eve fill his addiction anymore? damn, getting the shakes....

This absolutely has nothing to concerning Gemstone in it.

Therefore please move it to off topic, bbs concerns, etc. reg
