Titles/Professions?

I just recently titled, and when it came to my title, I decided to turn it off. I really don't see the need to proclaim myself as "Lord Emtel", and I generally find that people will treat you differently if they don't see a title right away.

Also, I personally hate all the new titles Simu came up with, and wouldn't use any of them if you payed me. Whenever I see "High Lord So-and-So" running around, I always think... "Okay, what's he smoking...? Crack?". Guess I should get my mind outta the gutter, huh? Some of the titles really just seem like an excuse for some people to inflate their ego even more when that's the last thing they need.

I also turn off my profession set... Being a rogue, I prefer for people to not see "Emtel, the Sylvankind Thief" or something. "No, I wasn't in your pockets, I swear!" Hrm. Yeah, right. I'm not even sure if I like the professions that Simu released either. I personally like the warrior choices the best (Warlord just sounds nice.). Do you like the professions? Do you leave yours off? Do you think it really affects anything?

((Edited for clarity. Hopefully it helped. And a spelling mistake. Grr.))

I'm not a big fan of titles either. The current character I'm working on who is level 18 right now will place the Lord title up, but I don't plan on using Great Lord or High Lord. I also rarely put up my profession. Again, I have my current character with Disruptor up, and will continue to use that. The profession names I like are:

Warlord, Thief, Mage, Priest, Disruptor, Necromancer reg

One word: Rhymester

All the other Bard names are "gay" little titles that fit into some Robin Hood: Men In Tights kinda crap.

("gay" as in "happy, coy, etc")

Aww... you don't like "Gleeman"? ::nudges::

((Don't you hate it when UBB code turns your attempt to poke into a smilie face? Grr.))

I think the choice to display titles depends on the personality of the character. I've seen people that "fit" their title very well; others would look unnatural with one.

One night I was the only locksmith in the Tower, and was trying to work by room order. A "High Lord" came in and was appalled that I wouldn't place him first in line since he was the only "Lord" in the room. A lively discussion took place, but the end result was either his "majesty" could wait his turn, or he could seek out another locksmith to help him.

Personally, I have never displayed a title and I doubt that I ever will.

Heh, I woulda told him where to shove it. I'm really, really, really glad that my new rogue doesn't train enough in lockpicking/disarming. There's so much of that undesirable stuff that goes on, it's really nice to not have to deal with it.

Whenever I used to pick in the tower, I'd always go up the steps and pick there. A lot quieter, less scroll, harder boxes, bigger tips, generally older characters (None of the "can sumwon opn my 4 kob ches pleaz thx"), and less headaches. I found that a consistent group of characters frequented there also, and it's a good place to interact.

Sorry, but I gotta disagree. No matter how "cool" or whatever High Lord may be, Simu could've easily made a better choice and picked something more fitting, in-genre, and with less ability to be construed in a bad way.

Besides... no one likes those idiots who run around all the time and go "I'm so high, man." It's not something you need to proclaim.

I will concede that Soulslayer is one of my favorite profession titles. It's very fitting for the sorcerer profession, IMO.

You should have voted then. That's what the majority voted for, that's what we're stuck with.

They should get rid of the titles completely. reg

I'm still p-o'd there's no knightly titles.

I'd like to be a Sir, or at least be the Elven Knight.

I like:

Martyr, Swordsman, Blademaster, Soulslayer, Brother/Sister and Priest(ess) - in fact, i like most of the cleric ones. I wish wizards could be an Archmage instead of Archwizard, it just sounds better.

Warlord is nice, but doesn't fit my fighter's character. Furthermore, why are there both Mercenary and Hiresword? Put a civilied warrior profession in there instead. ::grumbles::

And Summer, if your customer was in character, and not just being a "hey dood i'm level 100 ph33r me", I think he raises a good (in-character) point. Then again, he is dealing with a street rat (no offense ), not a business, but perhaps he should get a little consideration. reg

You shouldn't make assumptions when you don't know the facts. I did vote. I don't mean this offensively, I just dislike being categorized with a group of complain who complain but do nothing proactive to help the situation.

I agree. I don't see what was wrong with the titles of Lord/Lady and Legend. The only reason Simu decided to create them was as a meager offering of something "cool" to the older characters who are getting screwed by the age cap.

I agree, Gnomad, <well, except for the street rat comment!> if he was truly a nobleman expecting immediate service, it would have been fun to try to "charm" him into waiting his turn. However, this "High Lord" gives new meaning to the word WHINE. I can deal with snootiness, but snootiness combined with whining and sulking has me reaching for my waraxe!

Heh, wasn't talking about just YOU, which is why I answered after many people posted and didn't quote anyone. Relax.

Besides, they were changed because the higher leveled people wanted to be recognized for being that old and different than the standard character.

This is why legendary was added, a very BAD addition since no one should be allowed to categorize *themselves* as legendary. And thus changed AGAIN.

If they make the effort of changing them, they should take ALL titles away, even lord/lady and just stick to improving the profession titles. reg

Who's not relaxed? Certainly not me.

Fact is, when you address a group of people, and someone happens to be included in that group... you're talking to them too. But anyways.

I don't really know about doing away with the titles all together (I have no problem with Lord/Lady and Legend), but something definitely needs to be changed. Back in the AOL days, or even when GS first moved to the web, having a title was something to be much more proud of that it is today. There's so many newbie robo-Lords these day that being titled just isn't that large of an accomplishment.

I think you're a bit mistaken about the new profession titles, which were created in response to the age cap that Simutronics decided to implement. When people such as Malok were told "Hey, sorry... but all that time and effort you spent doesn't mean jack.", Simu realized that they had to at least do something to alleviate the situation, which is why they created the new titles.

As far as the older characters wanting to be recognized as older and different, do you really think the entire wardrobe of alters and 240 year old appearance makes them look like standard characters? Please.

I find it so hard to stomach that a group of already "distinguished" characters would find the need to have new titles. Even if they did, I simply can't believe that they would choose the ones they did for themselves. They're horrible, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone to use one of them. Secondly, I'd say only 30-40% of the characters able to use these new titles actually do. Most people realize they suck. If they were created because the "higher leveled" people wanted them, wouldn't these "higher leveled" people use them? Makes sense to me.

I would like to see different types of profession sets available to all the professions. When the new artisan systems are implemented and it is no longer as necessary to solely hunt for experience and wealth, it would be interesting to see "Artisans, Weaponsmiths, Merchants, etc." running around. Just a thought, anyway

Does anyone know if Zmud supports string replacements such that if "High Lord Dufus" shows up, I could replace it with "Pompous Ass Dufus"?

Currently I simply squelch all those titles. reg
